You know, this is completely irrelevent and feels pretty awful to say, but I think if someone came into the Naruto world with a big gun, they'd all be dead, amazing ninja powers or no.

YoungFlame I dont think its fair that we compare garra and toph from different shows because they both posess differnt qualities that the other doesnt. For instance, toph cant see in the sand and i would assume would have some difficulty bending it where garra only bends sand. We cant assume that many things can get past garras shield but if toph could bend garras sand than they might have a fun fight. But anyone who follows the anime on youtube for instance and saw episode 218 may realise how to defeat garra. agreed. ive been a gaara fan for YEARs but toph is cool too.... i just dont have the heart to proclaim one winner before it has happened...

Toph can bend sand. Toph can sense where it is, like how Katara can sense water. Toph can sense some vibrations through the sand. Toph cannot get an accurate picture of her surrounding this way, because of the distortion. She could possibly sense whee something big was, but she couldn't tell if it was a rock or tree or something else.
Gaara would win in almost any situation. There are two main factors in the outcome: location and whether or not Gaara has any sand. If they are in a desert, whether or not he has brought sand, he can use what's there. He is much quicker than Toph, and would be able to evade her fairly easily. If they were in an area without any sand, if Gaara brought his own he could use that and even create more, but if not he would have a slight disadvantage. However, he could easily crush some a small amount of earth into sand on his own, and use that to generate enough to fight with. If the fight took place on someplace with no earth but just metal, Toph would be able to bend the impurities inside the metal, yes, but that would not help her much. Gaara would still be much faster, and could take her out from close range.

I would say Garra even though I want Toph to win. Garra just has more experience with sand. Maybe if Toph wasn't blind she would win but Garra can elude Toph by throwing things at her in the air. She cant see anything that isn't connected to the ground. She can only tell people's movements by how they move on land. If she wasn't blind she would kick Garra's big sandy butt!

I can NOT believe the overwealming support for GAARA here! What the heck are you guys thinking!?
The only way that Gaara would stand a chance against Toph would be if the fight was restricted to only sand bending. If that were the case, Gaara would probably hold an advantage because he usually stands still to perform his attacks so Toph would have to sense them in the air and not by his stance or moves.
Otherwise, think about this:
Toph has the power to control all forms of earth. That means:
*sand
*soil
*mud
*rocks
*metal
*crystals
AND if you consider that Katara has the ability to control people by bending the water in their bodies (blood bending) then it might be possible (although it was not covered in the series) that Toph has the ability to do the same by controlling the minerals within someone's body. Or worse - perhaps she could draw them out in a solid form, thereby causing serious damage.
I just don't see how anyone could back Gaara when Toph has an arsenal like that behind her.
It doesn't really matter though, because this is a fight that would never happen.

She can bend metal,sand and earth!
(sand in book 3)
(metal in the last chapers of book 2)
(eart sence birth xD)
