Well, it is true that there are a lot more women who are into shounen-ai/yaoi. But probably, as someone said before, it's mainly written by women for women. When I go to yaoi panels at conventions the majority of the audience is female. More males do seem to be coming though, as of late. There are even straight men that go to yaoi panels, without their girlfriends being there. My reasoning is because they really are straight, but really just want to learn about yaoi and it's appeal to people. Some of the gay guys in yaoi panels would prefer to have the guys look more like guys, instead of the extremely pretty boys that are depicted in yaoi. So, this could be a reason for there being a more female fanbase.
As for shoujo-ai/yuri, I find that the audience is a bit closer to 50/50. My friends and I run a yuri panel, and our audience is pretty evenly spread out with women and men. Mainstream stuff I think is made by women for women. As far as fan art and things of that nature are concerned, I feel that it is targeted towards a male audience. The women are usually depicted in poses and situations where they are very unnatural. I find it hard to actually find fan art that I am interested in where yuri is involved, but the same can not be said for yaoi pictures I might be interested in.
I am happy to see that both shounen-ai and shoujo-ai are becoming more equally represented at conventions. Because for the longest time, especially at photoshoots, it was all about guyxguy poses. Now, people want to see both. It's great.

I don't care which audience or gender shounen-ai and yaoi are aimed at. So many are interested in yaoi and such that it's pissing me off and turning me in the other direction. Although there are some guyxguy pairings that I adore, I find myself preferring a romance between two women. I don't belong in the yaoi fanbase, thus I feel awkward being in a group of friends that's in love with it. These same friends influenced me to find a guild like this so I could discuss girlxgirl love.
If I watched shounen-ai, there would be some hot guy in it that I'd fall in love with, but he would be gay and no one who role-played him properly would want to RP him being with a girl. talk2hand People who only RP yaoi offend me. Since my main group of friends hate RPing straight couples, I got pissed and went looking for a guild like this.
More on the subject, however, people who like yaoi don't annoy me for the most part. If that's all they talk about, that's when it gets annoying though. I like shoujo-ai and yuri because I can find an interest in a female character. Girls who watch yaoi only RP yaoi so they can have a romantic relationship with their love interest. On the other hand, I only like having a girl as my main RP character so it would make sense for me to have my character fall in love with another girl just so I can be a girl.
Sorry for rambling. I suck at staying on topic. XP In conclusion, I just wish there were more people interested in shoujo-ai and yuri. It would make things much easier for me if more people would accept girlxgirl, or just quit making my favorite characters out to be gay. =|

I think everything I would say has been already said. I have grown fond of both the shounen/shoujo-ai genres; but for the most part I really prefer shoujo-ai/yuri (um... has nothing to do with being gay. I swear). And the yaoi fanbase also drives me into a wall; sometimes I just want to be rebellious and destroy all that is yaoi; but it's still a good genre, but as previousesly said in other posts, the fans can be so annoying. D:
I just want equal representation for both. In my area where I live, it's "yaoi yaoi yaoi!"

ffdarkangel I love yuri because of the delacate romance. You can't get that in anything other than a yuri. In almost every other kind of anime I watched at aleast one of the girls was getting steped on by the guy or was just plain stupid or a b***h. The guys were shallow and I hated that. After I watched Kannazuki No Miko, I couldn't go back to normal anime. Thus I am here. LoL same here 4laugh
