Nicole was suddenly thrown out of her fantasy world rather violently, and next thing she knew she had fallen down on the cold grass. She stared up at the cloudy sky and blinked. "Wha...?" she muttered. She lay still for a moment, then attempted to push herself up with her elbows, but as soon as she put pressure on her right arm, pain shot through it, and a small grunt escaped her lips. She collected herself as the pain died down, and sat up again, this time using only her left arm. She cradled her arm and attempted to bend it. Thankfully, she succeeded, with less pain this time, which meant that the elbow had not fractured when she had fallen down, but she estimated it was a sprain, which would not be very helpful. She must have unknowingly tried to use her elbows to cushion her fall backwards. Not a smart idea. Once Nicki was sure she was not hurt too badly, she turned her attention to the boy in front of her, lying on his back. He had run into Nicole, or perhaps she had run into him, but either way both of them had fallen down and there was no point in assigning blame. Nicole stood up and looked at him, and was struck by how attractive he was, promptly forgetting her thoughts of the professor. The boy's blonde hair stood out against the grass, and his face was rather handsome. Putting out her left hand, she grinned and asked, "You gonna get up?"

Cyrus had fallen fairly hard, but his coat had cushioned most of his fall. His spine didn't feel amazing, but he could move, so he knew he wasn't paralyzed. He groaned and looked up at the girl with whom he'd collided. "Huh? Oh, right." He took her hand and began to pull himself up, trying not to topple her over in the process.

As Nicole pulled the boy up, she could tell he was much stronger than her. Not that that was saying much. Nicole's muscles were well-developped, but most of the time a guy could beat her in strength with little effort. Once he was standing up, she realised she hadn't ever seen him around Hogwarts. She smiled again and said, "My name's Nicole, by the way. Sorry for knocking you down, I just wasn't paying attention at all. Too much daydreaming... So what's your name?"

He brushed himself off. "I'm Cyrus. And it's quite alright. I was as much in the wrong as you were. Should really start paying attention to where I'm going." He sighed. "I'm kinda new around here, so I was just on my way to get a look at the grounds. So far, I've spent most of my free time by the lake."

Nicole suddenly realised that she was really quite sweaty. Her forehead glistened and her tank top was rather wet. Whatever. Not much I can do about it now, she thought. "Yeah, I was just out for my daily run. It's such perfect weather for jogging that I couldn't pass it up. Unfortunately, my mind's all over the place today, so I'm not quite enjoying it as much as I should. But that's another story altogether." Now it was Nicole's turn to sigh. "Anyway, no wonder I haven't seen you around before. Where were you before you came to Hogwarts?"

"Oh...well, actually, I've been to a lot of schools." he said, scratching the back of his head. "My mum never really learned to stay in one place, so I've been to about sis or seven different schools around the world by now. It took me this long to convince her to stay in one school long enough to graduate. And Hogwarts was the closest, so...here I am." he said. "But I pretty much just got here, and well...I'm not sure exactly what I should be doing."

Nicole smiled at the boy. "Well, I know this place pretty well, after all, I've been here six years. So if you ever need anything, don't hesitate to ask. I'd be happy to help," she told him. "But, I should probably get going. I'm getting kind of cold," she said, glancing at her bare arms and shoulders, "and I've got to finish my run. But I'll see you around I guess."

"Cold?" he asked, and removed his jacket. But instead of handing it to her, he just stood there, looking around. "I don't know what you're talking about...I don't feel cold." Of course, he had lived a good portion of his life amongst cold places. Plus, cold just naturally seemed to rebound from him. He shrugged. "Oh, well. I'm not using it, so..." He handed his jacket to her. "Here. Can't have people go around catching colds. It's just not healthy."

"What? Oh. Thanks," said Nicole with confusion. She hung the jacket around her shoulders, instantly feeling warmer. "Yeah. Thanks. This... is warmer." She was still confused. Why would a guy give her his jacket? In Muggle movies it was always a sign of affection, but movies were rarely characteristic of real life. Nicole convinced herself that she was making it up. There was no way he liked her, they had just met and barely knew each other's names. Though Nicole did reluctantly admit that she was slightly attracted to him, she could not jump to conclusions. That would only lead to disappointment. So she told herself that it was simply because he was sincerely concerned about her catching a cold. No affection whatsoever. "I would hate to catch a cold," she told him with a smile. She began walking in the direction she had originally been going, half hoping he would simply say goodbye and leave so she would not end up making a huge fool of herself, but more hoping he would follow and talk. She was intrigued with this boy and wanted to learn more about him.

He watched her leaving for a moment. Well, damn...I can't just leave now. She has my jacket...I gotta get it back from her when she goes back inside. Besides, today's too much of a drag...I need something to take my mind off things. So he began following her. He was silent at first, trying to think of a random topic of conversation to pick up on. Finally he said, "So, you've been here six years. Long time. No doubt you're quite the witch, eh?"

When he began to follow her, Nicole suddenly felt happy for absolutely no reason at all. Or at least, no reason she would admit. Nicole was amused by the fact that he thought she was a good witch. She giggled and replied, "Actually, no, not really. I'm not that great at anything. In fact, I'm terrible at being a witch. I don't remember any spells because I don't listen in class. I'm too concentrated on other things to think about getting good marks." Other things like attractive male teachers, she added silently to herself. But of course, she wouldn't say that out loud. Her new acquaintance would probably be completely weirded out and never talk to her again. Plus, suddenly older men didn't seem so important anymore...

"Yeah, I hear ya." Cyrus replied. "I listen and stuff, but I never really do much else. It's all too tedious for me. I usually wind up letting my mind wander to whatever topic seems closest in my mind. I usually only pay attention during lessons about the sea, or things like that..." He shrugged. "But who knows, right? Maybe this school will hold my interest more."

"Yeah, hopefully. There's nothing worse than sitting in uncomfortable chairs and being utterly bored. I hate those chairs. They do terrible things to my back," Nicole remarked, rubbing the back of her neck. "But yeah, generally the teachers here are pretty interesting. It's just there's something that makes me hate to do work. I don't really have anything that pushes me to do well, so in my opinion there's no point in listening in class."

"My sentiments exactly." Cyrus replied. "Except interesting teachers are beings I've yet to meet...I'm having trouble believing you." he said, grinning slightly. "But I hope you're right. There needs to be something to keep my attention focused on school for more than three seconds, or else...well, convincing my mum to finally stay somewhere won't mean much, will it?" He sighed.

"Yeah, but I'd still rather settle down and be bored in class than continuously move around. I would hate to move so much," she said, and paused to think for a minute. "I had to move once when I was a kid, from Sweden to England, and I hated it. Especially since I loved my home country so much. When I got here, I had to make new friends and everything. It was not fun, 'cause I'm not exactly great at making friends, and I had so many great people I loved back home." She smiled to herself as memories of Sweden came back to her. "I remember me and my older brother always used to go over to my uncle's house around the corner and play with our younger cousins. They didn't speak a word of English. I tried to teach them, but they couldn't care less, because both their parents were pure Swedish and had no plans of moving out of the country..." Nicole trailed off, then shook herself out of it and came back to the present. "Anyway. That doesn't matter. The point is, I could never imagine moving around as much as you do. I think I would be way too mad at my mother after even one move."
