My concert choir teacher encouraged all of us to try out for jazz choir and since I was not fammiliar with much jazz in seventh grade, I decided to try out but also to pull along a good friend who is now my best friend, lol. We both made it and had a blast. There was only eight people in that choir so we got a lot of individual help.

It wasn't untill ninth grade that I started to get into listening to more of it though. We had an extra assignment to learn and teach the Charelston to our honors US history class, and for that we had to find our own music and while everyone was laughing at the funny 20's jazz hits I was enjoying them, lol.

My best friend and I used that dance to our advantage in other classes as well, lol. Don't worry about being uncoordinated, it is such a fun dance and everyone should try it because it can be so much fun and entertaining even if you can't get it right! You should have seen the people we forced to learn it biggrin . They made fools of themselves, yet still had a blast. One girl we forced hated us (stupid 'end to preps' problem she had) and after this she ended up liking us, lol.

biggrin people don't get into jazz, they discover it...dig?

Well since we're talking your way, i got into it when i was 13...i started to listen to this jazz station in Georgia when they were still small. Wjzz 107.5 is big now. That's pretty much it, i like...no LOVE the sound of jazz and blues. It's beautiful. The only reason some people don't dig jazz is because they never really listened to it.

i don't play an instrument but i intend to play the harmonica (sorry, that was kinda random)

:blinks for a moment:. The first time I heard Parker play Ko Ko. That's what did it for me ya? I was obsessed from that point on. I transcribed that solo later on, but still... Man!

My friend was going up to a jazz festival in the country and his bro got sick so he asked me along. I had barely listened to jazz before then, and i had only ever played classical music. I got home, spent all my money on jazz cds (having no computer to download songs on) and begged my parents for 3 weeks to let me play trumpet. Since then, 3/4 of my music library, at least, is devoted to jazz, and i play in two of the school bands (the rest are classical and, therefore, not for me)

haha...that's a good story for me. I was in photo class realizing no one really wanted me there and there was no tenor in my school's jazz band that year (my junior year) and I asked the band director "how'd you like it if I played tenor for ya in jazz band?" and since I was gonna drop my 1st period photo class, it worked out perfectly since jazz band was also 1st period...he said "are you kidding? I'd love to have you in jazz band!!"...at least I was wanted in that class!!! And...I loved playin' since...even if a lot of the kids in that class didn't and would've rather had a free day crying

Eversince I was a kid, I was pretty open minded and diverse when it came to music-- I liked rock, pop, rap, hip hop, jazz... I listened to them all. Well, most of them, with a great exception on country and certain sub genres within each genre. I always liked them smooth/cool/lounge jazz type of things, pretty spiffy.

But it never really grew upuntil I reached grade 9, where I met Ted, my tenor sax xD After that I started appreciating jazz more, branching off into big bands and bebop. Soon after I pretty much fell in love with jazz greats like Trane and Miles. Specifically Trane xD

I never posted in here? How....odd. Oh well, no time like the present, neh?

Well, let us see. Technically I didn't really get into jazz until the eighth grade, or at least, that's when I began to take things seriously. However, it all BEGAN in the seventh grade, when I first joined jazz choir....well, actually, it was kind of half way through the year (at Christmas time....) but yes. And I suppose the interest factor was sparked even further back than that. In the sixth grade, actually, when my friend was telling me about how she was in jazz choir. Then the next year (we're back at seventh grade now) I joined choir, and half way through that year (as I already said) I joined the jazz choir, although I'd been contemplating it since the beginning of the year....wow I'm sucking at telling this story. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that I became seriously interested in jazz in the eighth grade, and my interest was obviously sparked by jazz choir. I've been in jazz choir ever since (yay me!) although, my part has changed. I used to be a Soprano, but now am an Alto. I'd like to sing Soprano again someday, but I seriously don't see that happening (stupid voice and it's changing x___x) Er....anyway, that's the end of that story.... Um....The end.
