"M'fine Jackles," she said, looking back out the window. There was something distasteful bubbling in her chest. That tiredness had grown to jadedness, but she had yet to acknowledge it.
Worse yet, the thought then arose; Jack doesn't deserve that too.

something strange
Chel filed into the theatre behind him; he was so tall it was hard not to feel pity for whoever was going to end up sitting behind him. Thankfully they were going in a wee or so after the movie's release so the theatre wasn't totally packed by any means.
She pointed to the seats she wanted and followed until they settled. Her feet curled up onto the seat cushion. She watched the screen, but was hyper aware to each of Jack's movements. The closest she could liken it to was back in middle school when a boy's arm or a girl's enticing legs actually meant something.
Mostly she was waiting for the question to be answered: serious or not, change or remain?

For what it was worth, Jack didn't move often, save for when he leaned over to whisper a comment about the film. It wasn't to the degree of when they had watched Lord of the Rings, for instance, but some things bore commentary: did someone seriously green light that line; did you see that guy making a weird face in the back; that's a sweet costume; what are those.
He called it a date, but it was still pretty casual, as most things were between them. In truth, he didn't know how to approach Chel. The business with Mel made him wonder what exactly had happened, and on top of that he wasn't sure he had waited long enough to be considered polite. (Then again, when did Chel care about being polite?) But he never did enjoy the hesitation, so he tested the waters and put an arm around her, offering popcorn with the other.

An arm didn't mean much. She didn't jump at the touch, but neither did she lean into it. She was how she always was; she just existed and if there was an arm on her, so be it.
She took the popcorn offered and turned back to the screen. She wasn't any more affectionate than she was if they'd been on his living room couch.
... But she also wasn't rejecting it.

Neutrality wasn't rejection; close enough. (Although he was starting to question the arm. Cliche, maybe.)
When the credits began and the lights came back on, he stretched his long legs and laid back in his seat to have his arms follow up. "Wasn't too bad," he said. "Thoughts?"

"Mm." She thought for a moment. "I'd ******** th' freaky one." Which wasn't saying much because she'd probably be down for a lot of the cast members.
"An' I don't get why everyone made such a big deal outta it. It was an aight movie, wasn't great." She shrugged. "I never saw the first one though." She had assumed this was a sequel.

"I don't think there was a first one," he said, snorting amusedly at the assumption. Since it was in reach, he pat her shoulder. "I could show you worse movies. There's on one Netflix called Birdemic."

"Why you always bring up such weird nerd s**t?" she responded, rolling her eyes.
Their popcorn having been finished and the movie now over, Chel wondered if there would be an after credits scene. For the record, she didn't care very much about after credits scenes, but Chris considered them holy and for it to be a mortal sin to leave early. So now she was in the mindset of waiting for one.
"Wait but ain't it all the batman people?"

"Well, yeah, but it's not really a sequel to anything. I guess it's a spin-off?" He hadn't really been keeping up with all these comic book movies and still honestly thought DC and Marvel were essentially in the same universe.
"And I bring up weird nerd s**t because I'm a nerd, remember?" He nudged Chel's shoulder with his.

"Eugh don't sound like you're proud of it."
She leaned further into his side at the nudge. "M'surprised you didn't jus' wanna make out in the back or somethin'."

"Why would I go to the movies to make out?" Jack asked with a raised brow, staying leaned in. He almost made a joke about not needing to pay to kiss her but thought better of it. "You have weird priorities."

He scoffed. "That doesn't even make sense."
Their conversation was broken up by the mid-credits scene, but it didn't take long. Jack stretched again and got to his feet, plucking up the now empty popcorn bag with one hand and offering his other.
"Shitty CGI movie is still on the table," he said. "I have several Sharknados."

She slapped his hand a high five because of course she did.
"Yeah m'down. Maybe not t'night- I feel like my brain's fried." And her skin was starting to itch, too.
