Kevin thought it looked easy enough to hit the target. He was a little excited. They were shooting lasers! He focused on the target, and missed!

[LESSON ONE]
Wu-Xia was undoubtedly one of those kids who had been looking forward to Marksmanship training, and anyone watching would have sworn that her ears perked up a little under her dark-purple braids the second the Instructor started talking about "firing lasers." What he said after that was little more than a vague impression in Wu-Xia's mind, one sneaker tapping erratically on the floor beneath her desk as she waited impatiently for the go-ahead. The puzzle-box-style folding of space did distract her for a second or two - Mental Worlds were so cool! - but as soon as the targets came into view, Wu-Xia had jumped to her feet and taken aim, forefinger pointed and braced with her other hand like a kid playing Soldier in the schoolyard.
Unfortunately, Wu-Xia's first shot went wide, pinging off the largest pendulem and dissipating into nothingness as it ricocheted away. Nothing daunted, Wu-Xia merely tried again.

Just one more and she'd be the first to finish. Verity resolved herself, and focused her mind on a censor that was sprinting towards her.
