So I have a question that I've been thinking about for a while. Ancestors is a big thing in Heathenry. But I don't really know my ancestors. Most of my relatives seemed to have already passed away, and most of them I've never even met. So I have no idea about their parents/family/relatives before them. I've asked about them to my parents a few times, but the responses are usually vague and short.

So I guess what I'm asking is how do I honor my ancestors without knowing them? Obviously someone's not going to know all their ancestors, but I mean... I know only one. It feels like I should at least be a little more aware. =/ Or does it not matter? How do you honor them? Is it vague and general?

Well, there's different sorts of ancestors, you know? There's your ancestors personally, and then there's ancestors of your country and of your tradition, there's historical heroes, and so on. And I mean go back far enough and we're all related anyway. Apparently most of Europe is personally descended from Charlemagne.

And most of our more recent ancestors would have been Christian and it might not be appropriate to honour them within the context of Heathenry anyway.

I honour my ancestors in a mostly general way, because I worry about offending my more recent antecedents.

Alternatively you could look up websites like rootsweb to see if someone has included your parents or yourself in one of their family trees (I found six generations that way) or ancestry.com (which is very expensive).

I've got similar problems Sanz. My dad's family history is a big question mark to me. And there are certainly some I wouldn't ever want to honor anyway. I tend to take the same route as San myself. I honor my personal ancestors generally in a way that doesn't impose my tradition on those who might not approve and where I can identify someone specific I may honor them in a more focused way. I also honor "those who came before" in a very general sort of way, not specifying that they have to be my direct ancestors. They don't have to be. Just those that lived, loved, and fought before my time and that I feel are worthy of honor, respect, and remembrance, even if I don't always know their names.

Speaking of, I need to wrap up my plans for the feast of the fallen.

Getting semi-off topic...

How exactly do you use Rootsweb? All this talk about ancestry got me wondering and I was able to look up my grandmother but I got lost trying to trace roots. It has when she died but that's all I was able to do so far.

Edit: So I ended up finding out there was like a mini-genealogy class today up at the college so I talked my sister into going with me and I have a better understanding of the site and got a list of more sites that I can use.

Alright, thanks. I had a feeling that's how it was, I just wanted to double check.

So I was thinking about going to The Troth's Trothmoot in June since it's only like an hour drive from where I live. Has anyone been to one, from the Troth or another organization? I have no idea what to expect, but it sounds like something I shouldn't let pass up. The more I think about it the more excited and nervous I get. ^^;;
Thankfully my boyfriend said that he might go with me, so I won't be totally alone and lost. Especially the drive there since I'm horrible with directions, GPS or no.

I'm probably going to contact them to see if I can get a little more details on what they do and what to expect. I'm a little surprised how little information they give about it, unless it's too early to really say, or I'm completely missing that page. xD

Ouch. That's on the FAR side of Pennsylvania from me and even the closer edge is a good five hour drive so I don't think I'll be joining you. I've also never had a lot of personal interest in the Troth and I've never been to any kind of large Heathen gathering at all. My practice has generally been solitary with the occasional forays into open circle groups that are okay with a Heathen Blot.

That's understandable, I tend to avoid long car drives, especially since my car's gas gauge and mileage meter are broken so I have no idea when I'm low on gas. So far it's been a "get gas on the same day every week" thing.

The rather large scale thing is what makes me nervous. I'm assuming with such a large crowd there will be all types of people, ranging from fluff bunnies to "experts" ((I can't think of a better word at the moment.)) And still being rather new to Heathenism makes me feel like this experience will really help me along in my path or totally scar me for future events. I'd rather go to a smaller scale one first, where it would possibly be easier to get the vibe on who attend, but from the bit of searching I've done there's no groups anywhere near me. So I'm reluctant to let a possible awesome experience pass up.

I don't. I live in New Jersey, and quite possibly the only one, since interesting people/events are only near New Jersey D=

Wouldn't know. I'm in Michigan myself, though I've been known to spend some time in PA.

I'm in Massachusetts, but have been to Pennsylvania a few times. Still, not sure I'd ever go to Trothmoot. I've never looked up what it is, exactly, and I'm not too fond of large(r) gatherings if I can help it. Something about misanthropy and introversion not mixing well with crowds.
