They do, but then the factories explode from an overload of nuclear power and it destroys 99.9% of the ozone layer. Then most of the world dies from lack of oxygen and ultraviolent rays leaving only 0.1% of the earths origanal population. You aren't one of the survivors. (the earths population in 2010 is about 6,892,200,000...DO THE MATH >:] )

You do, but then when you use your powers you cause the entire world to have blackout. The countries of the world demand to find a culprit and your best friend turns you in. Later that day, you are excuted. And so ends you life.

They get dishonorably discharged and as a result can never work again, thus they become homeless for the rest of their life. Which isn't very long since upon discharge an angry patriot shoots your friend for being discharged with dishonor.
