Adustes took a few short steps away and reached out to one of the nearby tables, grasped the back of a chair and slid it back toward the bard, seating himself when it had been drawn sufficiently close.
"That was quite an intriguing tale you wove. Is that a song you perform often?"

Vhael'iss blinked, her surprise rekindled. So it had been the subject of the song... She tilted her head slightly, not quite sure as to what he was getting at. "Not terribly often, no...but occasionally." She began hesitantly. "Why?"

So, she only occasionally told the tale. That was a good start, but there was much more Adustes would need to find out before it could be counted it good news.
"I heard part of this same tale some time ago, but was never able to hear all of it. As I said, I found it intriguing. I was hoping you could tell me more about it, starting with the origin of the story.
"How long have you known of it? How did you first come across it? Do you know if it is well-known in this land, or others nearby?" he asked, pausing between questions long enough for her to respond.
His explanation wasn't a good one, he knew, considering the line of questions that followed it. But it didn't necessarily matter, so long as he got his answers.

A single arched brow conveyed her disbelief of this explanation but she said nothing until his questioning began. There was no harm in answering, she supposed, so she replied simply, "Many years." to the first and "A storyteller, like myself." to the second inquiry. Her skepticism grew with each question however, and she paused for a moment as she thought over his last.
"I must confess, I am curious why one such as yourself is intrigued by a story of long-deceased dwarves." She said finally in a mild tone. She didn't believe him for a second; there was another reason he wanted to know this information and she could see no reason to just hand it to him without receiving anything in return. She just needed to know how badly he wanted to find out.

Adustes' lip twitched in irritation - not at the ambiguity of the bard's answers, but because of the answers he received, neither was as he had hoped. He crossed his arms, attempting to appear more casual than troubled, seemingly oblivious to the minor screech as the gal-ralan's protruding spikes scraped over the metal of the opposing gauntlet.
After a moment's contemplation, he decided there wouldn't likely be any harm in explaining truthfully. Perhaps if he were lucky, it would loosen the girl's tongue.
"Very well. It is not the fate of the dwarves that interests me, but their settlement. I seek an object that is, or at least was, held there; and this very night I will be departing in search of that fortress. I thought it prudent to discern what I could about the popularity of your song, so that I might not waste my time with the journey if it has already been pilfered."

"Ahh, so that is what you seek with your band of hired help." Vhael'iss almost smiled as suddenly it made sense. It was obvious when she thought about it; she really should have realized sooner. After all, the only thing she hadn't known about his quest was the destination, but it was no matter. She knew now.
A hand idly stroked over the deep cherry wood of her instrument as she considered how best to proceed. If she answered all of his questions, he'd be off in search of this object with no gain to her what-so-ever. Then again, her song had made no mention of any items of particular worth, nor had the man she'd originally heard the story from, so she wasn't sure if it would matter either way to him, but he seemed to think it did.
"And you are worried that I have already spread the tale of this particular object? Or just that I have made it known that there is a keep out there, free for the looting." She asked, with a somewhat amused smirk as she tried to figure out exactly what he was all jumpy about. She could feel the agitation coming off of him easily, despite his calm exterior.

Adustes briefly raised one eyebrow at her musing. It shouldn't have surprised him that she knew of his business; after all, Vellek had approached him previously informed. It seemed word had traveled through this town more quickly than usual, if even the bards knew of him on the third night since he'd arrived.
"Your song held no word of the item. But if widely spread, be it your doing or that of any other storyteller, it reduces the chances that the ruins remain untouched."
PostPosted: Sun Sep 20, 2009 9:03 pm

Vhael'iss leaned back slightly and spread her hands in a gesture signifying helplessness. "Well, I really don't see how I can help you with that. Whether I have performed the song once or a hundred times, I do not know when someone will take it to heart." Well, that wasn't entirely true, but she had no way of knowing if she had ever inspired one to seek out the fallen keep.
"As for how widely known the stories are..." She began with a thoughtful tap of her viola, then looked up at him again as if a thought had just occurred to her, and not a particularly pleasant one. "You know, I just realized that I am receiving nothing for answering your questions." She frowned at him.

"And I have yet to receive any information of value," he said with a scowl. "Amend that, and you shall be compensated."
He reached a hand into his belt pouch, withdrawing a few coins and briefly holding them up for the girl to see, then closed his fist over them. "I did not ask whether your audience heeded your words. I asked for the frequency with which you performed that song, and if you are aware of the same in regards to other bards in any lands to which you may have traveled. Now, have you anything worthwhile to offer me?"
PostPosted: Mon Sep 21, 2009 11:17 am

She eyed the coins with a look that bordered on indignation, as if she thought that if that was all he intended to pay her, she considered him cheap. But it was better than nothing of course, and so she crossed her legs, still holding her viola steady, and began speaking.
"It is a commonly known tale among the dwarves, as you have probably gathered. I have also heard mention of it in some of the more western cities of Midgarde: Talanthus and Targass mainly. Nothing further east than Drasek, I know for sure. And still, not a very common story in those places, I have only heard smatterings and rarely the entire legend.
The storyteller I spoke of I have not seen since that time so I cannot say what has become of him or his stories, but he was the only other that I ever heard spread the tale other than myself. I myself sing it occasionally, perhaps not in every new place I visit, but close to that." She finished, punctuating it with an arched brow. Did that suffice?

Adustes' scowl faded as he considered the girl's words. That the dwarves knew of it was no surprise. Over time, they may forget the exact location of the fallen civilizations of their kin, but never the existence of them. And dwarves were much more likely to travel to such places to reclaim them rather than loot them. If they had returned to those ruins, it should have been common knowledge. Adustes had nothing to fear from the bearded folk.
She sang of it nearly everywhere she went? That didn't bode well for his mission. He hoped that she hadn't been traveling for too long. She appeared young, but her elven or fey heritage was easily apparent. Even he couldn't tell just by looking if she was a couple decades or several centuries old. There was no telling how long she'd been wandering the land.
It was a safe assumption that she'd been to the cities she'd named. He was familiar with Talanthus, one of the three central trading cities in the western corner of the kingdom. Targaas and Drasek were almost dead center of the nation, if he recalled correctly. That was not good news, but at least it excluded Kalthas. If word reached the capital, the fool king would undoubtedly send a small force to take the fortress, for use against the barbarians.
But, she had said that it wasn't a common story in those places, and only one other bard she'd come across told the tale. With the war in the north, few would dare travel into the barbarian lands without an army beside them, and those brave enough to do so were more likely to be drawn to the battles on the front lines.
All things considered, the odds still seemed to be in his favor.
"Thank you," he said as he rose from the chair. He retracted his hand and slipped it back into his belt pouch. Rather than pocketing the coins in hand, he withdrew another, and held out a silver piece and a pair of gold coins.
A thought occurred to him as he waited for her to take the coins. Many bards were more than simple performers; there was magic in their songs. They were adept in inspiring greatness in others, improving morale -which would likely prove quite useful with the group he'd assembled, and were generally knowledgeable individuals. And there was the entertainment value as well. She could be valuable to have around. If not, then perhaps he could at least prevent her from spreading the tale in his absence. Even if he was leaving soon, the trip would be long without the aid of magic or a mount. Anyone using one or the other could easily overtake him and arrive long before he did.
"Are you able to use magic?" he asked.

Vhael'iss nodded once at his thanks, though she did not appear pleased, even as she reached out and took her payment. Well, that was that, she supposed... He was done with her, and was about to go on his way with his assembled group to seek some great item, while she remained here in this damnable town, dripping misery on already pathetic peasants. The girl could not help feeling disappointed. Not for the journey, of course- plundering through ruined cities was never a thought that thrilled her- but she had never met another fey before... and he was leaving.
Not that she had any way to stop him, nor anything more to do if he stayed, but she couldn't help feeling that this encounter had been something of a let down. After all, this was the first time she had met one of her own ilk; shouldn't it be more interesting than this?
Dispirited, she pocketed the coins and stood to lower her instrument back into its case, so it was with surprise that she looked up again. Magic? The question took her off guard at first, but then her expression hardened into something akin to disdain. "If you're suggesting that you want me to come along and make your men feel all inspired and heroic, you've got the wrong bard." She clasped her case shut with a definitively snap. Happiness was not her forte, and she'd rather burn her viola than make people feel all courageous and magnificent, she wasn't even sure she could if she tried. There was no way she- wait a minute, what in the nine hells was she thinking?
"However..." This a little louder, as he'd probably begun to walk away by now. She looked up again and continued more softly, voice almost impassive. "I could make your enemies fall to their knees, lay down their swords, and beg you to end their misery..." A bit overly dramatic, perhaps, but she was unfamiliar with the art of bragging and she wanted be sure she got his attention.

Adustes' brow furrowed and he stood slightly straighter, his usual display of surprise. He didn't understand why, but the girl seemed somehow insulted by his question. Perhaps using magic was something she aspired to, but had yet to achieve? Perhaps--
He was wasting his time. Fey were difficult to understand even by their own kind. It could be something as simple as an imagined slight, or a breach in etiquette among her particular race, whatever it might be. She could have decided on a whim that she didn't like him. Whatever it was, it required more time than he was willing to give to unravel it.
Regardless, she was preparing to part ways. It seemed she'd made her decision. "Very well," he said, and began to turn back to the group he'd assembled.
He stopped at the sound of her voice and looked back. Maybe he had misinterpreted her....
Her claim definitely caught his interest. If it was true, such a power could make her very useful. Battles with monsters could be averted before they could begin, if she could so affect them quickly.
"That would be even better," he said, a heartless grin spreading across his lips. True or not, it still benefited him to bring her along. She could prove her worth -along with the rest of the party- when, and if, they came across any hostile creatures.
"Would you be interested in accompanying me?"
PostPosted: Tue Sep 22, 2009 10:52 pm

Vhael'iss' own lips curled up in a less-than-kind smirk as whatever embarrassment she felt over her last words vanished. She had meant for them to spark the man's interest and they had done just that, judging by the dark grin he was giving her.
And he had invited her along... Did she really wish to go with them? She had done her fair share of traveling, yes, but always to get to another city or town, and never that far north. She was no fighter... Could she really trust the others to keep her safe if they encountered any hostile natives? It was a great risk to take, she knew, but her sense of adventure was stirring and it would give her a reason to stay with the shadar-kai, perhaps learn more about him and his kind. And, if nothing else, she was surely to come away with another story to tell...
Her grin widened, decision made. "I think I would." She slid the case's long strap over her shoulders and walked forward to join him.
She would definitely have to talk to him about this item, but she somehow doubted that he had shared that with the others and there was no need to bring it up now. Perhaps later, when they could talk privately once more.

"Excellent," Adustes said. "We were preparing to depart momentarily. I believe the journey should take us four weeks, including our return. Have you any preparations to make? Or are you ready to leave now?"
