Jude Law was good as Lemony in the beginning, it started getting on my nerves towards the end. I didn't like how they had subtitles for Sunny, I thought they could have come up with something more unique. I loved the costumes. I didn't even realize what the spyglasses were for until about half way through the movie.

And for you who are saying SoUE has a time frame, it doesn't. Yes there are Jeeps which would say it is nearer to today, but why would Harold (I think that's his name) be inventing a blimp then?

It never said he was "inventing" a blimp. If he was then the book would be back WAY too far. If he was then Olaf wouldn't be driving a car it would be a horse-drawn carriage since cars were so expensive back then.

Well, is he in the US or England or Cuba? They all have differnt technology levels at different years. I really don't think you can say what time frame SoUE is in, OR where it takes place.

You guys can beleive whatever you want, I'm going on thinking my way.

I physically can't be Cuba but England and USA are better possibilities but from the way the books say it it sounds more like it's in America in my opinion.

Personally I don't think it's set in a particular country. England or America are good guesses, but from the places they describe in the books it doesn't sound like it fits either of them.

Yes, by looking at the movie you would think that it takes place in England since most of the adults have similar accents, however the children don't.

Also, it really can't be very old (I'm not sure if I mentioned this earlier) but just look at the Carmelita. I mean, it's a high tech submarine. Sure radar had been invented for a while, but early submarines weren't so advanced. I'm sure the book purposely doesn't give a real setting other than the made up locations, but we can speculate from the descriptions that it is fairly modern and takes place in either the US or England (or maybe even Canada, who knows).

That's why I put Cuba in there. I don't really think it takes place in Cuba, I was just saying it doesn't have a real setting or a real time frame, and I think that makes it just that much cooler. You never know what's going to happen because you don't know what time it is taking place, or where they are.

I'm sure it's based on England or America, but I don't have any idea of the time frame.

Actually, I like to think its in America. But most likely its in England. What is Daniel Handler anyway? Does he live in America? surprised

what bothered me was...

Why was the marvoulus marraige at the end?
why is it that they burned the marraige certificate...
and it doesn't say anything in the book about olaf using a large eye to burn down the Bauldilaire's home

3. I was thinking that too..... I always thought someone crawl though *Spoiler*

i though it might be that the parents did it themselves...i mean...how odd is it that it happened when the children were gone?

I always thought Olaf planned to burn down the house while the children were gone so that he could use them to get the fortune. If he killed all of them he had no chance.

*randomly pulls somerthing back up*
So some people are excusing certain changes to the movie because they think it'd overall make it more interesting and easyer to undertsand for those who have not read the books, right? *gasp* I decided to ask around and see what people who haven't read the books think. Most of the people I asked said that they thought it was confusing. gonk But only a couple thought it was boring. Almost everyone didn't get the whole VFD thing, so I think it was a waste to put so much of it into the movie. >.>

Most of the people I talked to actually liked the whole V.F.D thing. (even though they didn't know it was VFD and all..) I thought it was rather funny that my parents wanted to see what I was so obsessed with and went and saw the movie and they loved it.

Pretty much everyone that I've talked to that saw the movie but hadn't read the books thought it was great.
