Aleksandr looked back and nodded quickly. "Don't worry about it. I have a penchant for driving at high speeds anyway," Aleksandr said while looking at Millia from the rearview mirror of the van. He backed up quickly and then shifted the large van into drive. He felt the engine roar to life as he mashed down the gas pedal and sped out of the garage. He sighed and began to relax as soon as the van was in motion. He drove with his left hand, his right hand resting in his lap casually.

Once they had arrived at the outer gate of Midgar, he sped up once more, pushing a hundred kilometers an hour. He checked his watch casually as he rounded the corner toward the chocobo ranch. There was no real path but he kept his speed in the high hundreds while stealing quick glances toward the back, hoping that no one was nervous about his reckless driving.

"Hey Kim, once we're through the marshes where does your route have us headed? I want to get there as soon as possible," Aleksandr said. He noticed his voice was barely audible over the roar of the engine, but he did not care to repeat himself. He just hoped that Kim had heard him or at the very least happened to be looking over at him and read his lips.

The ill feeling that Millia had disappeared when she felt a sudden pull and went off balance a little. She noticed that this was due to Aleksandr's driving. "Whoa!" she shouted when she fell "Easy on the wheels, yo!" Getting up, she dragged herself towards the front seat. She figured that since he's new and all, why not take this oppurtunity to get to know the new member. Once she was behind the passenger seat, she grasped it firmly so that she won't fall.

"Gee, guess you weren't kidding on the whole 'driving at high speeds' thing huh?" Millia joked, a small smirk was on her face. "Well, whatever. I like--no, love speed."

Millia felt a little awkward but went all 'whatever' over it and introduced herself. "We weren't introduced properly, My name's Millia." Her smirk went a little wider, waiting for him to reply.

Aleksandr listened to Millia as she screamed at him from the back but then heard how much she loved speed. He smiled and wondered quietly to himself what there wasn't to like about it. He heard her introduce herself and he turned his head slightly in her direction, looking at her out of the corner of his eye, which he noticed, was actually quite difficult to do. He smiled, checked the road ahead of him with a quick glance and then said, "Aleksandr. It's a pleasure to meet you Millia. I really hope you love high speeds as much as you say you do because something tells me this's what it'll have to be like most of the way there" Aleksandr said before turning back around and looking at the road, which luckily resulted in him making the turn he'd almost missed, though it required quite a bit more effort and jostling of the van than it should have.

"Sorry about knocking you down earlier, it's just that, well, I have a feeling that if I don't get us there either on time or slightly ahead of time Ater will give me hell for the rest of forever," Aleksandr said with a smile before turning his head back to the road. "So, Millia," he began after a few moments of silently driving, "what got you interested in becoming a Turk anyway?" Aleksandr asked while looking back at her. He was fairly sure that he knew his way well enough around the Midgar area not to hit anything so he figured he could be a little careless while making small talk.

As he waited for her to answer he rested his left arm on the arm rest of the driver's side door. He looked down at the slightly exposed watch that glittered in the hot white sun as it streamed through his window. He saw the way that the metal caused the light cast on it to dance and he smiled a little to himself. He concentrated on the road, though open grassy area wasn't quite as amusing as he had hoped. In the distance all he could see was more of this same field and he wondered just how long it was going to take for them to make it to their destination. He figured that he would ask Kim after Millia answered him. Otherwise he figured Kim would say something if he were to make a big enough mistake. His stomach growled slightly but he did his best to ignore it. He knew that it was anticipation causing it to knot up and twist as it did. He cursed himself silently for seeming like such a newbie and made a point not to let his excitement show.

"Aleksandr.

Millia nearly went off-balance again when Aleksandr made the turn. Silently, she cussed to herself. While getting herself back to a steady position, she only managed to catch the 'Ater giving him hell' part. She snickered "I know what you mean, Ater's a pretty scary guy but if you get to know him, he's actually kind of nice. He won't show it but, its there." She partially whispered to him back for she didn't want Ater to hear.

"So, Millia," he began after a few moments of silently driving, "what got you interested in becoming a Turk anyway?"

Millia was rather surprise. No one has ever asked her this before. In fact, she was quite glad someone did. "Well..." She started, thinking of how to begin. She had no memory of her past and she can only remember being an experiment for Professor Hojo. She doesn't know her true purpose of living...yet. And knowing that, she gave herself a reason to live; Him. "I was forced to become a Turk, you see. I didn't want to... Especially if I'm going to help that ol' perv's wish come true." Millia then stopped, unsure whether to continue. I mean, she was about to tell someone she just met her little 'secret'. She'd rather tell Kim and Kim alone but robotically and automatically...

"But then something happened during my Academy years and I found myself--my own--reason to become a Turk..." Millia's expression was now blank and appeared semi-conscious. "And my own reason to live..." she added, in her thoughts. Suddenly, she gain full awareness and realised what she had just said. "Err...anyway, I've said enough. I'll tell you more about it when you're ready to know." looking away, lips pouted, Millia managed to keep her secret safe.

Millia was watching the scenery through the passenger seat window. After a short moment, without looking at Aleksandr, "So, what about you? Why are you a Turk?" She asked in a cool manner before finally turning to look at him.

Aleksandr listened as Millia spoke, he nodded his head as he casually turned, sped up, slowed down, cruising over the road, his demeanor casual, as if he had been driving like any everyday civilian. He heard her pause and he cast a quick glance backward, wondering what was the matter. He'd already heard that she had been forced into being a Turk. He felt that was a bit unfair, and yet, he was unaware of who to blame. He'd never heard of anyone being called an old pervert, and yet, his abundant newbieness was enough to leave him out of that loop. He figured that it was either family or someone within the organization that he had yet to meet. He had known full well that there was a lot of corruption within the corporation when he signed up. He turned his attention back to the road and waited a few moments longer.

"But then something happened during my Academy years and I found myself--my own--reason to become a Turk..."

Aleksandr tuned in as soon as he heard her continue. He heard what she'd said about finding her own reason to be a Turk and he felt less bad about her being forced to fight for another's aspirations. He remembered his own time at the Academy and how that had proved to be a real eye-opener as far as him finding his own reasons to continue on. It was there that he learned how to fight, to be strong, to not back down regardless of what he was up against. A part of him wanted to remain a civilian back then and yet, he knew that if he didn't he would end up slaughtered by the ShinRa-made monsters that had slain his father when he was younger. The thought of it made him clench his fists around the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. But his smile never faltered, nor did his driving.

Millia was watching the scenery through the passenger seat window. After a short moment, without looking at Aleksandr, "So, what about you? Why are you a Turk?" She asked in a cool manner before finally turning to look at him.

Aleksandr heard her question and broke himself away from his memories. He turned and looked toward her, but saw that she was staring out the window. The sinking feeling that he'd somehow managed to screw up already grasped him and made him inhale a shaky breath. But he just closed his eyes for a couple seconds, upon checking to make sure that the roadway was clear, and then opened them again with his calm demeanor restored. He took one last calming breath before he nodded to himself. "Well, essentially, I joined up with ShinRa in the hope that I could learn to avenge the weak. You see, I grew up in Nibelheim, and, as you may have heard, there was an incident there involving genetically engineered monsters at the reactor. My father was working there as a researcher at the time and was killed by one of the monsters that had managed to free itself. He hadn't been informed about what was going on there, he was only checking the reactor output data. Well, after his death we moved to Midgar because we had nowhere else to go. My mother was too afraid to stay in Nibelheim. I enrolled in the Academy but they told me that I wasn't good enough for Soldier. I didn't have the strength for it they said. But, one of the instructors there noticed that I was very good when it came to stealth and told me that my specialty may be of use to the Turks. I figured it was better than being a military grunt and so I signed up. I mean, I have no other skills than fighting. I didn't really inherit my father's intelligence for science, but military tactics and physical training were a perfect fit. So, what about the rest of you? Why've you all become Turks?" Aleksandr asked, trying to get the burden of conversation off of him for awhile.

Millia didn't look away from the passenger window but she was listening to him and find him to be quite interesting. It seems that he too was from the Academy. Millia didn't really remember anyone from the Academy, for she wasn't really interested in anyone or anything at that time-- before she met him. Since she didn't had any question to answer or ask, she figured that it'd be okay to space out now. Millia rested her head on her arm that was hugging the head of the passenger seat. Slowly, her eyes went cloudy and her expression blank; Millia was now on 'autopilot'.

--- Flashback ---

In a lone apartment room, steam was seen filling up the place. All the nearby mirrors and glasses were being clouded by the vapour. The steam came from the next room--the bathroom. A rustic shriek was heard when the occupant turned the tap, shutting off the water. She then pulled the towel away from the towel rack lazily, drying herself with it. She left the bathroom with the towel hung across her shoulder, the rest of her body left exposed. She walked over to her bed where a neatly placed uniform was laid--the ShinRa Academy uniform.

"Another day at that crappy Academy..." She muttered as she gets herself dressed in the attire. The lessons and trainng there was like a stroll in the park for her since she had undergone painful and vigorous training at the ShinRa Lab--exactly like a guinea pig.

Once she was done getting dressed, she dried her hair and braided it neatly. Without anything to eat, she left for the Academy. As usual, she'd be on a 24/7 watch by some ShinRa Infantrymen, ordered by Hojo for he didn't want his precious test subject to run away--again. It's true, she has made several attempts to run away and in those several attempts, she succeeded once. She was so close to escaping, but was caught before she could even cross the border leaving Midgar. Knowing that it was useless to run away, she'd thought that it was better to just die than to keep on living. What purpose in life did she have anyway? She knew she's just going to end up being something she doesn't want to be and do things she doesn't even want to do, so death was the only option. It was the only way out. But she was unable to do it. She didn't had the strength nor the courage to kill herself. So she thought that it was best to just wait. Wait for something to happen. But on that particular day, a couple of years ago, something happened and it changed her point of view on living...

After a day of training and lessons at the Academy, it was time to go home. Millia was the mean and sarcastic one in class, and for being that way, she earned no friends. She also had no friends because the other students were jealous of her--being a prodigy and all. Normally, she'd take the dangerous routes home for she wanted 'something' to happen to her. However, on that particular night, something happened. And she wasn't the victim...

As she continued her walk, an explosion was heard not too far from where she was at. Alarmed and curious, she dashed off to the scene. There, she saw a ShinRa Company limousine being pursued by the terrorist group,--to ShinRa's eyes--AVALANCHE. Millia remembered that the limousine in pursuit was only used for driving the President around. And for knowing that, she couldn't care less about what happens to it now. In an instant, the Soldiers that were 'babysitting' her came up to her and told her to assist them and this was Hojo's order.

Pissed, Millia didn't really had a choice and went off after them. Knowing that she won't make it there by foot, she grabbed the Soldier by his collar and pulled him down off his bike. Unconcerned, she tossed him to the side and went up the bike. The motorcycle roared when Millia started it up again and once alive, she immediately went after the pursuers.

It was lucky that the Soldier left a spare handgun with the bike. Equipping it, she released the safety lock and aimed at those exposed. Millia had a fetish for firearms and was therefore a very skilled marksman. Already able to estimate the velocity and the direction of the wind, as well as the speed of the moving vehicle, she was confident that she'd get perfect head shots. Pulling the trigger, she killed one and then another one on the next pull. Two gunners that were on the roof of the enemy van were taken down.

Speeding up, she decides to pull off a stunt. Changing lanes, she went up a ramp and has now overtaken the pursuers. Once alongside the limo, she saw a face that she was not expecting. It wasn't the President, but the President's son! A little surprised, she overtook the limo and just ahead, a dead end. She then turned the bike around drastically, causing the tires to screech. The limo too, halted suddenly. Aiming for the driver, Millia shot twice; the first one to get the windshield to break and the second one to execute a shot to the head.

The vehicle loss control and crashed to the side. The remaining occupants in the van left immediately as to not get killed by the explosion it'll cause. Before the van exploded, the President's son, Rufus, came out with what seems to be a cutomized shotgun. Starring at Millia in the eye, he tossed her an assault rifle. Ditching the handgun, she caught the rifle and started shooting at those who got away. It seems that the chase was just a ploy to get them into a corner for other AVALANCHE members came to their comrades aid as well as to eliminate the President-to-be.

Together, Rufus and Millia shot down the enemy one by one. The didn't say a word to each other nor did they watch out for each other's back. As soon as backup arrive, the two had already taken out the last of the enemy.

"Amatuers..." Rufus muttered to himself as he reloaded his shotgun.

Millia was strangely attracted to his 'cool' demeanor. She is a teenage girl anyway. The others came towards Rufus, asking him how was he feeling, whether he had any injuries and all that s**t. But no one asked Millia for she wasn't a member of ShinRa Company anyways. Well, no one except Hojo, who, actually came all the way out here just to see how she was doing.

"You alright, kiddo?" Hojo asked with a twisted smile on his face.

"Why...?" Millia asked with a face so stern, her crimson eyes glaring.

Hojo, knowing what she asked about replied; "It was just to check out your adrenaline. But I don't think it's enough to fill my satisfactory... Looks like I'll need to find you a more dangerous task and..." Hojo explained and then suddenly went on and on, mumbling and muttering things to himself. And from that point on, Millia couldn't care less about him anymore.

"You did pretty good back there..." a voice called out to her.

When she turned, she saw Rufus, looking all smart and neat in that white suit of his. He was approaching her and the closer he gets the more defensive she's becoming. ". . ."

Rufus noticed that Hojo was talking to her earlier. He threw a glance at him before stopping directly in front of Millia. "So, you're from the Academy. Any specific job you're planning to apply in ShinRa once you've graduated?"

"I'm going to be an M.D.A.R. Elite." She replied, her voice monotone.

"Any reason behind it?"

"Because I'm forced to...!" Millia replied harshly. "It's not like I have any other purpose in life anyway... I'm just a killing machine-to-be." Her face displayed anger and confusion.

"But it's your life. Why should you let other people dictate your life while you just stand there and allow them to do so?" Rufus advised, his face displayed no emotion though. "Live your life your way. Find your own reason to live...your own reason to be a Turk..."

A helicopter landed a few feet away, the headlights focused on Rufus. "Sir, the copter is here to pick you up." A Soldier came to inform him. Rufus acknowledged it with a nod. And just like that, he left with the Soldier escorting him to the helicopter.

That was it. She felt renewed and her eyes seem to look brighter now. She was opened up and realised that all she needed was to hear someone say those words to her. Now, she had a reason to live. A goal to accomplish. She has a new outlook on life and view things with a more positive perspective...

--- End of Flashback ---

Slowly leaving her autopilot mode, Millia then smiled to herself. Oh, how she wished she could meet him again. Just one more time, just to say 'Thank you'.

Ater lazily opened an eye and surveyed the view of the van. Slowly sitting himself upright he popped his neck lightly as he began to stretch, sleep had caught him by surprise, though unless he was doing something to keep himself occupied the chance of him falling asleep was pretty high. Standing up and holding onto the roof for support he looked out the windscreen, trying to get a good view of where they were. Though with no major point of reference he was pretty lost.

"So where are we then?" His voice was a little croaky, though a little drink would fix that problem pretty quickly.
"We do got a time limit y'know." Looking around more he realised pretty much everybody was in their own little world.

((Give us some time and we'll get back into it propperly!~))

[ HO'Feck! You're speaking in third person!! o__o That's NOT the Ater I know xD ]

Millia noticed that Ater was awake and mumbling some stuff, or whatever. She couldn't make it out for she was nearly half asleep. But not a moment too soon, Aleksandr drove over a bump and that made her bumped her head on the ceiling of the vehicle. Now, she's awake. "Ow.." She rubbed her head on where it was hit. "Told ya' to go easy on the wheels, yo." Millia then sat down and looked at Ater, "Did you say something senpai? I wasn't listening..." She then giggled but it died really quick for she didn't seem to be in the mood to joke around. Especially around Ater.

"Simple question there Millia." Ater took a swig out of a bottle before quickly replacing it about his person and rubbing lightly at his face. "Where are we? How long ago did we leave Midgar? When's lunch? Any info at all would be nice right now." He shook his head a little and sat himself back down in his seat. The major point of falling asleep was to get rest and feel better, though that never really did help, Ater never really switched himself off propperly. It was a double edged sword, that was on fire. Sure, it'd cause damage, but to who.

Millia was still slightly dazed but at least, this time, she understood what Ater said. "The answer to your first question is; We're in the middle of nowhere. Second; I think about half an hour ago? I wasn't paying attention to the time. And third; I would like to know too cuz' I'm starving. And for some additional info, Aleksandr asked each of us a question. I've answered my part, now it's yours--But if you're willing to answer that is." She smiled nervously, She had a feeling that Ater wouldn't answer these sort of questions "He asked what was our reason to join the Turks. I've already told him mine, so now it's your turn." In truth, Millia wanted to know too. Why Ater joined the Turks. So she looked at him with content and hope that he'll answer.

"Why we joined the Turks huh?" Ater couldn't help but chuckle a little at the question. "Hojo saved our life." He growled as he spoke the name "And frankly, he could have done a better job doing it to. But no, just another one of his little lab rats. Not that it matters. We're alive now, and that's all that we care about." Slouching into his seat more he folded his arms and looked at Millia darkly "So are we going into the whole story, or does that do it for you?" His tone wasn't exactly dripping with puppies and flowers.

Millia was ******** [is there even such word? xD] surprised! She couldn't believe what he had just said. "That ******** old perv saved your life?" A tone of disbelief could be noticed, Millia couldn't accept what Ater had just said. She felt like cussing non-stop. It was just too hard to believe. But how can it? I mean, she was under that b*****d's care as well. "Please." Millia seemed more calm now. "Continue." She was getting very curious about this. All she hope for now is the term 'Curiousity can kill you' doesn't come true.

Reaching about his person and putting out his bottle again, Ater took a generous swig before hiding the bottle and clearing his throat. He'd never really told anybody else about how he'd come to join the Turks. "It's been a long time since it happened. Seems kind of like a dream more than an established fact. We were at a bar. We were young, and all alone. No family. Just our gang, that was all we had. And we had money. Lots of it. Not just from before our family died, but from the gang activities to. Though the less you know about that, the better." Ater grinned a little bit. It wasn't such a hard story to tell now that he thought about it, though he didn't need much detail.
"One day, a rival gang turned up at our bar. Not like it was the first time some bozos had done it without checking to see who owned the turf. A fight broke out, and as normal, we were in the middle of it. We never saw the ones hanging back, all we felt was the hot metal hitting us. Next thing we remember is waking up in Hojo's lab. It was an agreement we'd had with the ShinRa for a long time. We had enough gil to make them help us out. Hojo revived us, kept us alive, it took a long time. Just sitting in a tube." Ater cleaned his throat again and carried on.
"Lets just say we look like a human jigsaw pretty much. But we're alive." Raising a brow he relaxed back and closed his eyes again "That's our story. Nothing fancy about it is there?"
PostPosted: Fri Jan 04, 2008 11:27 pm

Aleksandr listened to Ater's story and nodded to himself as it was relayed to the group, though more to Millia than anyone else it seemed. He wondered if there was something developing between the two, though he knew very well not to stick his neck out that far and inquire about it, to either of them. He knew right away that in a fight between himself and anyone else in the van, he was probably dead meat. He wondered if it was merely a coincidence that Hojo had had such a deep involvement in everyone's lives. He was aware that Hojo had been the chief scientist at the Nibelheim reactor when the ShinrRa were producing monsters. He blamed Hojo for everything that he went through. He knew that he could never like Hojo or respect him as a human being, because of the damage that he had done to his family, and even to his fellow Turks. "Seems like Hojo's a real piece of work," Aleksandr muttered under his breath. His tone was scathing, angry, but his external demeanor stayed calm, perfect and collected like he knew it must be.

Aleksandr took a right following a bend in the road and started to check around. He was starting to wonder whether or not he was headed in the right direction. It seemed he'd been racing onward in the same direction for far too long. Kim hadn't said a word yet and he was starting to get a little freaked out. He started drumming his fingers lightly against the steering wheel to mask his feelings of irritation for not knowing the roadways better. He was actually quite uncertain how he'd ever managed to find his way around Midgar, let alone the rest of the world. He'd seldom been far from home in Nibelheim and didn't know about any other cities other than by name alone. However, when he was younger he went to see the rocket that had failed to launch and had offset the ShinRa's plans to go to space. Ever since he was young he remembered hearing about the ShinRa's space exploration days and he remembered hearing how his father compained about the budget being cut after the failed launch. Aleksandr sighed. 'Considering the state of the world as it is now, I wish we had launched that rocket into space. Maybe we'd have been able to get off of this planet's surface before ShinRa killed it. Then again', he thought, 'ShinRa would probably drain that world dry and litter it with monsters too.'

"Lets just say we look like a human jigsaw pretty much. But we're alive." Raising a brow he relaxed back and closed his eyes again "That's our story. Nothing fancy about it is there?"

"A human jigsaw?" Millia shrugged as she was feeling chills going down her spine. "I don't think I'd want to imagine that..." Millia shook her head to clear the thought.

"Seems like Hojo's a real piece of work," Aleksandr muttered under his breath. His tone was scathing, angry, but his external demeanor stayed calm, perfect and collected like he knew it must be.

Millia could hear his mutter for he had mentioned 'Hojo'. His name--said even a mile away--could attract her attention. Millia was rather pissed too, though, at how involved he is in almost, every Turk's lives. "Shitty work, if you ask me..." Millia added, folding her arms and then leaned back in her seat. Looking over at Kim, Millia was wondering at how quiet she's been. Which was bad, because she couldn't have a girly conversation. And what's the use of having girly conversation with guys anyway? Well, unless they're gay. Looking over at the map she was holding, and then at the road signs, Aleksandr seems to be heading the right way. But she didn't know what will come after that since Kim had that part of the map folded. Bored again, Millia's stomach began growling a little, which reminded her that they haven't eaten their lunch yet.
