I'm not sure if it's a good thing that the bass is soft and it's the drums growling. I think I like it better than the usual "hard" drum sound, which is more of a "blunt" than a "hard."

Not really, to be frank. I'm not much for downtempo; too slow, too soft. I like my music hard and fast.
It's just that the standard hard drum sounds like it's decided that "hard" means "encased in a foot of rubber". Or like it's been castrated and is trying to make up for it.
What I have is more along the lines of a landmine with a chainsaw motor attached to it.
I love analogies.

there isn't one.
