Koku's stack of tower cards fell when Mari entered and he smiled at her. "You already know the answer. It just happened to you, sis." He teased. He stood up and put an arm around her neck as he smiled. "Okay, so you're the one thing in the world that you hate. Get over it. Your appearance has changed. So what, in my opinion, you look prettier than before. So your eyes are blue instead of red. That means-" He stopped and his smile faded as he took a look at her. "Wait, your eyes are blue! That is weird." He said, totally awestruck. "I just ended up with paler skin but you have blue eyes!" He smiled. "I think we have something here to put down in the record books. I have natural blue eyes from our father, so maybe you just inherited his abilities as well as his eyes." He thought as he wrote down 'Mari's eyes turned from red to blue' in a notebook. "Just for the record, do you feel more like Mari or more like Layna?" He asked bluntly.

Mari blinked. Father? That's right, the b*****d who acted like he was my dad, er, Kimo, and slept with my mom." She groaned. "I feel more like me." She said, surprisingly not in a mad tone. "I don't know. Mari?" She said, tilting her head. She felt slightly frustrated as she tried to think. "Layna told me that I had to..." she couldn't remember. "She told me I had to do something. I forgot." Mari walked out of Hisoko's room to the books, feeling slightly frantic. She noticed her heart was beating fast. Shouldn't vampire's hearts have no beat at all? She looked for a certain book. Any book. Something that would calm down her nerves. "Ah-ha! Why?" she said as she picked up a picture book titled Why? It wasn't a real book, but it would help her. She walked back to Koku's room and handed him the book. "Could you read this?" She asked, sounding like a little girl.

Koku looked at her to see if she was serious. Apparently she was. He wasn't going to argue, knowing how loopy he was at first when he finished his transformation. "Alright, sit down and I'll read." He said as she sat her down himself. He started off. "There once was a girl who only said why..."
When he finished reading the book, he turned to Mari, for the first time in a while, feeling slightly stressed out. "Are you okay? You haven't asked me to read this book to you since you were six." He said.

Mari nodded. "I'm fine. I just needed to calm down before I had a panic attack. Common sense, genius." She said as she grabbed the book from his hands and smiled. "Now, thank you for reading the book, but I have to interrogate you now. Who is it that you really are other than Koku?" She asked.

Koku looked at Mari to see she was serious. Her gaze was different. Before, it was more malicious. Now, it just appears curious. He sighed. "Zen." He stated simply. Zen was Layna's half brother who betrayed his family in the end. "I'm not like him, though. I would never turn in your hiding place if my life depended on it." he wanted her to know he was different than the man, that he really was completely different. Sure, he gave up his family business, but that was because he thought it was wrong and cruel.

Mari looked at Koku for a moment, her emotions unreadable. She looked down, trying to think. She stayed quiet, unsure what to say.

Mari looked up outside for a bit and quickly left the room. She looked around and smelled the scent of cat. "Ramona?" She said, sounding confused.

Mari was confused. "Where the hell ave you been lately?" she asked, sounding a little gruff, but more concerned. "You went all Amelia Earhart on us."

Mari sighed and smiled a bit, hugging Ramona. "I missed you~!" She said, sounding a lot more cheerful than usual. She quickly let go and put her hands to her side. "Sorry. It's just...a lot has happened since you've been gone." She said honestly. She looked down, thinking about Dante, Loki, Hisoko, and Koku. 'Amazing that I have this much drama without a girl in that mix,' she thought.
