Well, by the time they qualify as ancient mystic tomes, if the author is still around, he's likely either a Monster Slayer or an undead.

I don't know. The tomes used to teach the Shadow Government's classes on safe spellcasting aren't too bad.

The tomes used to teach the Shadow Government's classes on safe spellcasting aren't too bad. well they might be LESS bad than say "So you want to summon Xarranatos Distroyer of Galaxys?" (You guys remember that one?) and MAYBE they should be, say, distroyed only when we're sure we got the rest of them, I'm just saying that most tomes pretty much just result in way more chaos than they are worth.

Well, yeah, the ones to summon apocolyptic beasts are generally not cool, but I have in my possession Banishing The Undead For Dummies, Returning Planar Visitors To Their Homes, and A Step-By-Step Guide To The Healing Arts. Not to mention The Basics of Health and Hygiene, but that's not so much a tome as a text I'm pushing as required reading for beginning mages. I'm also trying to get it handed out at gaming and anime cons, but I'm meeting a bit of resistance there. *ahem* Anyway, would you consider any of these tomes to be troublesome?

I meant telepathy, by the way. The statement should have been "how mass telepathy with an ability to reach artificial intellegence can improve what would otherwise be automated gun turrets."

Well then, it might go something like this:
Everything that recieves a "threat" recognition in the mind of the telepath would be a confirmed target for the gun emplacements. The priority level would be set by proximity and/or degree of instinctual threat response. For instance, they'd casually mow down the closest goblins in a horde, but if there was a gigantic oni among them, they might concentrate fire a bit and take that sucker down instead.

I think magic in general is harmful. Sure you might say "What's a healing spell here or there going to hurt?" and maybe you're right, it's a harmless, maybe even helpful spell, but it's what I call a "Gateway" spell. Sure today it's just 'lay on hands' or 'detect object' or 'identify'. But mastery of basic benign spells will only lead to a desire to learn more powerful spells, bigger and more impressive magics. Next thing you know you're evokeing ancient evil fire gods to try to pick up chicks. I'm telling you, it's a slippery slope. having said that 'health and hygene' is an important lesson to be learned, and everyone should pay attention.

A slippery slope, indeed. However, having taken the plunge millenia ago, I'm of the opinion that responsible magic use is good overall.

Or at least keep a closer eye, and tougher legislation on magic control laws, as well as the ability to actually enforce the magic control laws we already have in place.

In case you haven't kept up on the relevant legislation, we do highly restrict magic use. It's just that non-licensed people still manage to learn some magic. Sometimes it's due to unearthing strange scrolls, or yes, tomes. Mostly, it's demon-taught. That's why we have a specific Magic Division.
