Our avatars looked alike and you mentioned Fleet Foxes, who I've been really into lately... but then, I don't listen to that song very much, let alone know how to sing along to it. the beer nuts' live album, which apparently came out in 2004 or something and husbinator just found out about it today whilst trying to spend itunes gift cards. evidently it is only available as a download, not in physical stores. he's been waiting for a new beer nuts album for ever, so he's pretty chuffed about the whole thing.
right now they're singing the cowboy song by thin lizzy. it's a st patrick's day show, so they're suddenly an irish band - i mean a couple of the members have irish last names, but they're not an "irish band" irish band, no pipers, no trad songs, none of that - usually they're just a bunch of alcoholics who like coke and dirty sex. so, you know, all the makings of a decent band.

*edit: so ok this is just one long rant.
Bagpipes is an instrument from Scotland, so I wouldn't specifically expect them in an Irish band. In fact, what makes an Irish band anyway? There's so much music coming from the island and most of it isn't 'recognizable' as Irish if they weren't singing songs about Bloody Sunday or have names that sound very Irish.
I guess tradition Irish music is more closely defined as it has some acoustic instruments like the flute and accordion and it are usually songs about whatever drama happened among normal people.
But really - defining music by the region it's from is one of the silliest thing currently going on. Last.fm is suffering from it too: if I want to listen to music like Golden Earring I used to end up with other Dutch music from completely different genres and the only thing they had in common was their Dutch passport. confused Think about it: would you tag 50 Cents as "American" on sites like last.fm?

when i say "irish band," i'm not even so much talking about bands FROM actual ireland - just bands who make a big deal out of their irishness and pull in a lot of traditional elements or make over old traditional songs. it's a genre. interestingly enough, i've heard of bagpipes before, so i know they're from scotland, but a lot of these bands employ them.

I can't listen to bagpipes for very long. They make me a little crazy because the pitch of the drone never seems to change. I'm listening to Astor Piazzolla's Libertango.
