Well it could of been part of a Master plan (though I doubt it), or he had to either as to not blow his cover or not to break his unbreakable promise thing to protect Malfoy (although her wasn't really in danger).

i think he wanted snape to make it look as if he killed him. say a different spell in his head. anyways that killing curse causes the person to just lye there all crinkled up, no marks, no flying up in the air and its supposed to have a green light. snape and dumbordore were arguing about snape having to do something and that he didnt want to anymore, earlier in the book.
