"Stop wasting your breath," she smirked at them. "It might come in handy."
She sprang off the edge, rounding into a perfect dive. The air seemed to part as Fren slide through the air, scattering seagulls in her wake.
And now comes the hard part, she closed her eyes as she neared the dreaded rocks.

Casson gave out a low whistle as he looked over the edge. "Take it easy on her guys. After all, she is a woman, right?" He tried to tell himself he didn't really care what happened to Fren, but he felt a pang of guilt as he reflected upon his last thought. He was glad he made the guys chuckle with his last little "joke," seeing they weren't taking this to seriously. It gave him a sense of security, letting him know they might screw up because of their male pride.

The female landed with a splash, water rippling around her. The globe let off an eerie radiance, bobbing haphazardly. She treaded water for a moment, watching it warily.
What now? She thought to herself, diving under the surface without a sound. Clutching the bedraggled stick, Fren swam towards the article.

(Hey, can you tell me what you had in mind?)

(You can just confront the different henchmen as you make you way up and I guess make a creative attack for something for each one. You don't have to pass by all of them though. Maybe just a couple. Two or three.)

Casson watched as his fellow shipmates started to take random positions on the cliff wall. They had already built a barracade up the easy, steady slope so Fren would have to take the cliff up, making the ascent that much more difficult. They hoped to surprise her here and there with a couple traps they had set up, like trip wire to set off a swinging axe or tumbling rocks. Little dangers to keep her busy all the time.

She grabbed the sphere, mildly surprised by its warm touch. Bursting up to the surface, she gasped for air.
The path up was barricaded. Damn it, Fren thought. The cliff rose up before her, a vast rock, covered with tiny ledges. It loomed over the bay, casting a forbidden shadow.
She swam towards shore, globe clutched in her left hand. Water splattered as she scrambled up on the small, rocky shore. Tucking the ball in her pack, she tightened the strings, hoping nothing would tumble out. The woman secured her shoes, then rubbed her hands and soles with the red dirt.
Here goes nothing. She grabbed a jutting edge, swinging herself onto the hardened stone. Bit by bit, Fren eased her feet up, moving one hand to find the next ledge.
It was slow going. The rock was sharp, sawing at her calloused palms. Soon her hands were bleeding, red liquid streaming down her muscular arms. Fren concentrated, all thoughts on the precipice.
Suddenly, a figure dropped down beside her, growling. He slashed her arm, leaving a bloody gash. She cursed, using one hand to pull out the bamboo. The female sliced his exposed leg, ripping off a layer of skin. He glanced down, astonished.
"Amazing what you can do with a few sharp rocks, savvy?" She spun the stake, knocking him off the outcropping. His cries echoed with the birds as he fell into the depths below.
Fren smiled grimly. It'll take more than that. She looked up towards the edge.
An axe dropped down. She squeezed up against the rock, gasping for breath. "Any more coming?" she yelled, tears forming in her eyes.
A man landed neatly alongside her, harboring a staff like hers. The woman lunged at him. He blocked the attack neatly, bruising her shin. She snarled in pain, slapping back with her stick. It snapped, pieces falling to the ledge floor. Fren stared at the bit of wood in her hand. That was all of her trusty weapon.
The opponent clouted her again, striking her wounded arm. Pain blurred her eyes, pulsing. She squinted, clearing her vision. The man dived at her. Fren stepped aside, letting him stumble to the shelf edge. She struck out, kicking him in the ribs. He howled in agony, bending over.
Fren leapt up, seizing one rock after another. She heaved herself onto the grass, arm dangling uselessly at her side. She wheezed, side heaving. But one thought entered her mind.
I did it.

"Ah!" Kuplan shouted gleefully. "What a wonderful woman! Casson?" The captain smiled gleefully as Fren laid on the ground crippled. "Yes sir," Casson said calmly. Walking over to Fren, he unstrung the orb and flipped Fren onto her back. She breathed heavily, the deep wounds in her arms obviously hurting. He smiled down to her. He took the orb and pressed it against her chest. He then spun it around until he found a indent for his thumb and pressed down to reveal the inside of the small eye, now growing a brighter blue than ever. Furling up his sleeve, he stuck his arm and suddenly became tense. Sweat ran down his forehead as he watched the reavealed wounds seal and mend across her body. Casson then started to breath with incredible exhaustion until collapsing to the dew striken cold grass. He breathed heavily, his whole body sore. He felt a slight tinge of pain moreso on his arm and on the palms of his hands though, the wounds that once covered Fren gone.

She smiled at him, then stared down, astonished. The veins in her arm pulsed soundly, not even a single white scar was left.
"Thank you," she whispered to Casson, standing shakily on the soft tuft of grass. Fren stared pointedly at the orb.
"What is it?" The woman asked, eyes searching his face for answers.

"He won't be able to talk for a while," Kuplan said with a little arch of his neck. He stood from the small rock he sat upon and motioned two of his crewmen to Casson. They hefted him up as another took the blue orb, seemingly touched it in a specific spot and watched as it closed again. The man then took it and hurled it as far as he could back off the cliff.

"In the years that we have sailed, we have found numerous artifacts bearing the same symbols," started Kuplan. "We have found about seven, that being one of them. Now obviously you have figured out what that particular orb does, draining life from one to heal the other. You can look at four we have onboard or ship, two others placed on this island for tests such as yours." He turned to watch Casson being carried down the slight slope towards the shore in the distance.

She glanced down the side of the cliff, staring at the small blue orb. It bobbed in the water, apathetic to her gape.
"When will he get better?" the woman asked, trying to keep concern out of her voice. She feinted unconcern, trying to look indifferent. But her azul eyes were tainted with worry.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 27, 2005 4:54 pm

"Ah, not to worry lady. Two? Maybe three days? What that thing does is splits the pain between the two, healing and making the wounds on the hurt not detectable or painful, but still under the skin non-the-less. The other's muscles rip a little at the wounded sites, and he gains scars where they would be. So basically both of ya will be sore for the next couple of days. Not to many people pass, so he doesn't have to many scars. Though he does have a real nasty one on his back from when he was a little to late for a man who almost got sliced in two. Almost died that month. Poor kid." He didn't bother to help her into the small boat on the shore, not wanting to disrespect her after her performance just then.

She gathered her things that lay beside the boat, then stepped in.
"I have always been a quick healer," the woman struggled into her dress, shift crinkled underneath the coarse cotton. She ran her hands down, smoothing the flowing gown. Despite the practical clothing and sensible plaited hair, she was very pretty, with a curvy body and striking face.

As Casson lay there motinless, he could hear the conversations of the men that were carrying him to the boats on shore, roeing to the main vessel and placeing him in the sickbay. "I don't like that girl on our crew one bit."
"Yeah, me neither. We've never had a female with us."
"That, and I expect she gets special treatment because she's a woman."
"She should be in the kitchen cooking our meals!" The other cackled loudly. Casson never felt so insignificant. He tryed to speak to the two, telling them to shut their mouths and do their jobs, but he couldn't. All he could do is look around and slightly move his right index finger, which wouldn't get him much.

She hooked the button on the back of the dress, sitting down on the narrow plank seat. The woman turned back to the captain.
"So what do you all," she motioned to the crew, "do?" A sudden thought entered her mind, causing her to raise her eyebrows and grimace.
"You're not bloody pirates, are you?" she inquired hesitantly, briefly pulling back.

"Not much of anything," the captain started. "Ever since Casson found those artifacts, different sea animals of which I've never seen before have attacked us. We used to be freelancers, taking up any job we could find, and it payed good, but now we don't have much time for anything anymore." The ship nudged the main vessel as Kuplan caught onto one of the descending ropes and hooked it onto a small metal loophole clamped onto the front of the small boat. He picked the other rope out of the air and handed it to Fren. "You mind?"

Silently, she grabbed the rope out of his hands and lashed it soundly to one of the many iron rings.
"A bit like mercenaries," she commented, then frowned. "I wonder why those creatures attacked you."
A rough ladder flew down. Fren grabbed hold of in, tying it down as well to secure it.
"You first," she gestured to the ladder.
