Yup, same here Affren, those are what I believe them to represent and then I use those same items that you do.

I recently read an article that said the belief of the athame representing air originated from a tarot deck created by a Garderian. In it the Sword/athame represented air and the wand represented fire. The belief is that the creator of the deck didn't wish to reveil the secrets behind Garderian ritual and switched the two around.

Like I said, I'm eclectic so I study whatever I can.

I absolutely love all the pictures of the altars I've seen here! Altars are a "thing" for me and I find them very inspirational to look at. I have several of my own and if I can get my digital camera to work, I might take a few pictures of my own to share if that is all right?

I read that the athame did the exact same thing as a wand, and whether you use an athame or a wand is all about perasonal preference. I have an athame. I'm still trying to find a wand. i prefer the feel of a wand...

Basically, i read that the athame was like a masculine wand,
and the wand was like a masculine athame.

i use a red candle for flame, a brown for earth, a white for air, and a blue for water.

well that's what i have, at least. yet to actually do a ritual or anything. Still learning... i guess its all about what you are most comfortable with...

This is a good thread. I'm very curious about other people's altars. o_O
Where their set up, whether their permanent or only put up for ritual, what's on them, how often their changed around, what the actual altar is (a little table, a box..). Personally, mine is permanent, it stays up all the time. I've had it up for years. It sits on top of my dressor. It's a little table with a back and sides and it has a drawer. I looked for something to use as an altar for a long time, then I saw it at a thrift store type place and was like, "that's my altar!" I usually take everything off it and clean it and put it back together a while before each Sabbat, so I can put it up correspondingly. I don't usually change much though, the colour of the altar cloth and an item or two maybe. Anyway..pics...

The pentacle above it is made of grapevine off my fence in my front yard. I made it myself.

Actually, no. They are not used interchangeably. The athame is the representation of the male phallus (or p***s, if you prefer), much like the chalice represents the womans womb. The wand represents air (the athame is a fire aspect) and is usually used by the high priestess to create the circle and bless the area. Though you can use the athame in place of the wand, you cannot use the wand in place of the athame. It's one of those small technicalities. If you're solitary, it's no big deal and is fine, but when it comes to groups, or even just two people, the athame is the correct tool to be used.

Wow. You guys have some great stuff. I currently don't have the ability to put up a picture but I do have and altar. I used to use this big picnic basket that I turned over when I was using it and used to pack my stuff in when I wasn't. I have an altar now and my started dad glaring at it whenever he came into my room at first. Now he thinks it's "pretty." Probably because he watched me make the altar cloth and pentacle for it. He bought the chalice I use right now. He's weird.

Oh, go on and post your pictures up here. I'm sure it's a great altar. My altar isn't nearly as great as a lot of the altars here, but I'm still proud of it.
