dont be hating on sets. each set is unique. i dont have a set that i hate more than the others. all of them are good in the right hands

There are sets that are almost universally loved, and those that are almost universally hated.
There are also blocks that drove loads of people away from the game.
The sets are not all equally good. The best cards in Homelands are complete dwarfs compared to the myriad of broken cards in say, the Urza block.

Not to mention Limited edition Alpha and Limited edition Beta. InQuest gamer magazine did an article testing each set. They built a deck for each set, one which they judged most suitable for representing the set. If I remember correctly Homelands came in last. Urza's Saga came out on top, losing only to the second place set Mercadian Masques' rebels. Tempest was third with it's sligh goodness.

While this test was extremely biased and only included decks built from expansions from Arabian Nights to Prophecy (no core sets), the article did make an interesting read.

Id like to see this test done with all sets up to now. Id put cashmoney on ravnica winning.

I'd say Urza's Saga, one of the mirrodin sets, Tempest or masques still have the best shot, though Guildpact, if the deck was red, would make the three Mirrodin sets, Antiquities, and Urza's Saga cry with it's shattering spree goodness. Future sight would be terrible, and when I say terrible, I mean mediocre.

i dunno...Darksteel would survive shattering spree

My money is on Unlimited.
PostPosted: Wed Jul 11, 2007 6:09 pm

true, it would. Mooby, Unlimited would be considered a "core set." I know it was in the article I had. The only sets that were tested were:

Arabian Nights
Antiquities
The Dark
Legends
Fallen Empires
Ice Age
Alliances
Homelands
Mirage
Visions
Weatherlight
Tempest
Stronghold
Exodus
Urza's Saga
Urza's Legacy
Urza's Destiny
Mercadian Masques
Nemesis
Prophecy

Therefore to test the sets today, they would probably only have a deck using cards from each of these sets

Arabian Nights
Antiquities
The Dark
Legends
Fallen Empires
Ice Age
Alliances
Homelands
Mirage
Visions
Weatherlight
Tempest
Stronghold
Exodus
Urza's Saga
Urza's Legacy
Urza's Destiny
Mercadian Masques
Nemesis
Prophecy
Invasion
Planeshift
Apocalypse
Odyssey
Torment
Judgement
Onslaught
Legions
Scourge
Mirrodin
Darksteel
Fifth Dawn
Champions of Kamigawa
Betrayers of Kamigawa
Saviors of Kamigawa
Ravnica, City of Guilds
Guildpact
Dissention
Time Spiral
Planar Chaos
Future Sight.

Hmm... not much of a selection. I'm still kinda new to Magic, but I'd like to know...
How many lands can you have in your deck? I think there isn't a limit on basic lands, but I mean lands in general.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 05, 2007 1:54 pm

A Constructed Deck:

-A minimum of 60 cards, with an optional sideboard of exactly 15 cards.

-As many basic lands as you want. The basic lands are Forest, Mountain, Plains, Swamp, Island, and their snow counterparts.

-A maximum of 4 of the same card for anything that's not a basic land. This, of course, includes all nonbasic land, as well as any other spells. If using a sideboard, this includes sideboard + deck.

-Cards must follow eligibility rules of the format (ex: ban and restricted list.)

A Limited Deck:

-A minimum of 40 cards. Any drafted card not used is in the sideboard.

-No limit to the number of the same card per deck.

-Must be constructed out of drafted cards.

Does that help?

Yes, very much! Thank you.

And you would want to have about 33.33% land in your deck. That means about 20 land in a 60 card deck. Often you want between 20 and 23. Some decks have more (usually control decks) while aggro decks can afford to run 19 or maybe even fewer than that.

I would say the Kamigawa set. I just could not get into that set no matter how hard I tried.
