"Calm down," he said, resting a strong, warm hand on her upper arm, steering her to the door cautiously. Casting his bronze-irised gaze in, he saw a large are licking with flames, and fiery lines coming from a sphere on the wall. As he looked, he recalled the hint that Saemi had given him, and walked forward, tentatively slipping his fingers around the orb and plucking it from its recess. As he did, the flames died away, the fiery lines that had been running from the orb to the flames also disappearing; flickering golden and orange light that had been giving light to his features dimming.
He looked to Konokku, nodding towards the now fireless pit, vaguely indicating the sphere in his hand.

(Yeah, well, I'm sorry. I've been having a lot on my mind lately, and haven't been roleplaying much. I've been accepting of you when you didn't post that often, so a little bit less complaining and a little bit more understanding would be much obliged. I know how to roleplay, and I bloody know when I'm not doing a great job. I don't mean to be snippety, but I really don't appreciate you telling me to "get my act together". Thanks. I hope that was good enough for you.)

((I apologize))

Konokku tentatively started down a small flight of stairs into the pit where, moments before, a blazing inferno had raged. She could feel the heat shimmering all around her in the air and in the stones, but they crossed the pit in safety. Another small flight of stairs led out of the pit, and there was another doorway at the top of these stairs. Konokku pushed open the heavy oaken doors and led the way to the inner chamber. She breathed a sigh of relief as she saw the shield-shaped door at the other end of the chamber. They had made it through the Cloister of Trials.

Satoh's face remained calm, but his eyes grew sharp as they immediately swept the room for Sique's rather hard-to-miss guardian in an effort to locate him. As his eyes fell on the giant door reminiscient of a cloister coat-of-arms, his mind began to stir with what it was Sique was doing in there--what it was he would soon have to do. Within him, he could feel the Besaid Aeon's connection with his soul, and he began to wonder the nature of each individual Fayth, and whether or not he would be able to gain assistance from them all... or if some would deny him for inexperience, inability, or lack of the proper character.
He continued to worry silently.

Konokku started when Vord, Sique's burly guardian, stepped out of the shadows and loomed menacingly over her. She took an involuntary step back and felt Satoh's warmth right behind her. This gave her a small amount of courage, and she returned Vord's gaze steadily.
Before anyone could make another move, the door slid open and Sique appeared in the doorway. "So you're here, are you?" Sique's voice echoed down to them, derisive as always. "Come to prove your worth? The fayth do not approve of pride, you know." With a look of tired trumph, he slowly made his way down the stairs. Konokku couldn't be sure, but she thought that the glance he cast her way was just slightly more filled with hate than before.

Satoh could feel an icy quip building up inside of him, wanting to tell HIM a little something about pride, but he swallowed it down, almost ashamed for having the urge to have said it. He merely forced a handsome, charming smile, and turned around to face Konokku. He put his hand on her shoulder, casting his gaze towards the door, "Well, I'll be right back.....," he leant forward, and his lips brushed her cheek in a kiss, though this was a rouse to keep the other two unaware that he was whispering to her, as immediately afterwards he muttered, "If they give you trouble, just stand your ground, and let me know. Don't let them get to you too much though, alright?" He smiled, stepping back, and raised his hand in an idle, salute-like wave before turning, passing Sique rather coldly without outwardly seeming so, and passed through the sheild door, which dropped down behind him.

When Satoh bent over to kiss her on the cheek, even though she understood what he was trying to do, Konokku felt her cheeks blaze and her entire body go rigid. Her legs felt as wobbly as a sandcastle in the rising tide, and she wished she could sink right down through the floor. Her thoughts were all in a muddle as she watched her summoner disappear through the doorway into the Chamber of the Fayth; she didn't know what to think or how to react.
But then she lowered her eyes to Sique, and saw to her alarm that his eyes were blazing with hatred more fierce than ever before. He swiftly crossed the distance between them, and pulled her face close to his by the neck of her dress. "You!" he muttered under his breath, his voice shaking with hatred. "You had best beware, lest I take your precious summoner away from you! I keep to idle threats now, but beware, beware, when there are no temples to protect you. Vord, we're leaving!" he shouted, shoving Konokku backwards as he let go of her. He turned on his heel, striding swiftly over to the door that led back into the Cloister of Trials, and slammed the door behind himself.

Satoh remained in the trials for about a halfhour. It was not long before he emerged, looking fatigued and worn thin, but triumphant, and somewhat soothed. That Fayth had seemed to take a shine to him--perhaps it was glad to see him, after it had had to bestow power to Sique.

He strode over to her, noting that Sique and Vord had gone, and he smiled a weary smile as he approached, "Was I gone long?" he asked as he raised a hand to comb through his hair, pushing it out of the way of his face, which it clung to quite happily due to the persperation that had dewed on him from efforts of negotiation with the fayth.

Konokku breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Satoh again. She had been on the verge of worrying for him; he had taken so much longer than he had in Besaid. "Not more than half an hour, My Lo...Satoh."
As they left the chamber to head back for the main temple area, Konokku felt a sudden urge to confide in her summoner. "Sique frightens me, My...Satoh. I don't know why, but...he seems to intensely dislike me. Why? What have I done to anger him?" Agitated, she wound one of her dark curls around her finger.

"Perhaps it has something to do with that fire back in Besaid... something tells me that didn't go as well as he'd hoped........," he smiled at her wearily, wiping some perspiration from his brow, his free hand moving to rest on the small of her back, steering her out as they spoke, "or maybe it's because there's something he wants from me, but he can't get to me, because you're such a talented guardian,"

Konokku's cheeks grew hot, but out of shame and not out of pleasure. "I'm not much of a guardian, I'm afraid. I'm sorry, My...Satoh, for being such a...such a...failure." A tear rolled down her cheek, but she felt too dejected to brush it away. And what was the use of hiding it from Satoh? He already knew how weak she was. Heaving a sigh, she asked, "Why did you choose me to be your guardian? So far you've had to protect me more than I've protected you."

He frowned immediately upon the sight of her tears, and turned to face her, putting a hand on her shoulder, the other lifting to brush the salty wetness from her cheek.
"You are a fantastic guardian... you saved me from that fire, remember? You have magic skills unlike any I've ever seen..... yes, I protect you, but it is my nature...,"
He leaned dow, his hand still on her cheek, to look her in the eyes, his long, fuzzy ears twitching slightly, his copper irises shining in the dim light of the temple, showing life and meaning.
"As for why I chose you.... I think.... it's because I thought you'd be ..... raring for a challenge. I am not much of a summoner. Often I wonder why I do what I do instead of being a guardian myself. I could have gone on another man or woman's pilgrimidge........ but I didn't.
You wanted to be a guardian, and you will be a great one. You have done your best so far, and that is all anyone can ask...
But there is something to be learned along this journey for each of us. For you, and for me. You will grow as a guardian, and I as a summoner, and we will each play to support the other's weaknesses with strengths of our own.

Besides..... a guardian does not only guard the summoner's body, but their mind, and heart as well. Do not judge your role as my guardian purely on lack of physicality,"

He smiled, straightening up, wiping her cheek off again.

"Okay?"

As Konokku listened to Satoh's words, she felt strengthened, encouraged. To think that he thought so highly of her.... His esteem meant a great deal to her, she realized, for he was her summoner. And he thought she was skilled with magic....
Konokku smiled up at him as he brushed away the last of her tears. "Thank you, My Lord. I mean, Satoh. I pray that we will grow on this pilgrimage, and.... Thank you." She began to walk again, feeling new strength in her limbs. She felt as if she could face the whole world, if Lord Satoh was at her side.

They began to descend the steps again, and he smiled to see her encouraged once more.
"So," he began, "Do you think that Saemi and Caemi are still here, or....... that they've already left........? It would be nice to be able to sit and talk with them again, wouldn't it?" He paid careful attention to the steps he was going down, making sure to land his feet properly. Going up had been much easier--he didn't have to see how far he'd gone, or how high up he was.

"They said they'd wait for us...." Konokku murmured, but she barely had time to say this before the twins themselves appeared and half-dragged them down the rest of the steps.
"So how were the Trials?" Saemi demanded.
"Man, you look beat!" Caemi observed, looking up at Satoh's tired face. She took one of Satoh's arms in her own, Saemi took the other, and between them they steered him outside into the sunshine again.
"How about that fayth, eh?" Caemi asked as they left the temple interior. "A mite stronger than in Besaid!"
Konokku followed behind the others, feeling slightly irritated. They acted as if I wasn't even there....

He chuckled wearily, looking between the two, gaze resting on Caemi, "a mite, I'd say," he smiled a handsome smile, "but don't worry.... you two don't have to carry me off in a stretcher, or anything," he smirked. It felt as if he WERE being carried off like so, with them steering him thus.
