Dragonflyfaerie Say where was the Marriot, what town was it in? Bloomington... It's right next to the Thunderbird. Their parking lots are sorta connected.

PirateEire domokun I liked the Marriot better than the Thunderbird. I realize the Thunderbird staff is much nicer and more hospitable than the Marriot staff, but the Marriot had hallways that more than two people at a time could slip through... And they had a courtyard! RAWR. I could not have said it better myself.............I mean what if you were in a wheel chair at the thunder bird, you could not get around at all, I dun like the place, I have been to all detours thus far. razz

It didn't affect a ton of people, but after 2 am they started shutting doors and whatnot and telling you if you did not go back to your room, they would kick you out. confused Granted, the Thunderbird gates off parts of the hotel, but they do not kick you out of the lobby or halls at a certain time. I remember the Marriot doing that and getting royally pissed because bed time is NOT 2 am at a con. They treated the congoers like little children. And we were not running around making tons of noise, we were simply walking around quietly talking. If a hotel were to tell a normal customer to get to their room or get out, they'd likely tell that hotel to stuff it. I think a hotel really needs to know what a convention is like and what it entails when they're agreeing to host one. It makes them lots of money, but they need to realize that money comes with working with the convention- that it's not just a ton of people staying at once. That's why the thunderbird gets lots of points from me, the structure itself isn't that great for a con, but the staff and people who work there are incredibly willing to work with the convention to make it enjoyable. A very nice feat considering they do have other people staying in the hotel as well.

My group witnessed and nakid pale white guy go running down the hallway, tons of teenagers screaming and yelling in the late hours of the night and a ton of creepy drunk people.

You have not seen a lot of scary drunk loud geeks until you go to Convergence. People being loud is part of the con. I've rarely seen/heard people be loud in the halls of the sleeping areas. Can't say I've seen a naked guy either, isolated incidents are no reason to condemn a whole group of 2,000 people. But as Eirie said, welcome to Con world. Cons are parties, especially late at night. Detour is truly a pretty tame one in comparison to many.

Well, I can say from experience I like the Thunderbird, no matter the size, but if they went to the Sheraton Bloomington I'd go. I've been to CONvergence in 99, 01, 02, 03, and 04 and it is just excellent. That, and CONvergence now has roughly the same size as AD, especially since they dried up the convention from what I heard. Things are more "civil". So, I think AD can fit in the Sheraton Bloomington.
But that is beside the point. My first AD was 06, and I really had a good time. Sucked that I didn't stick around longer, but no room and finicky mass transit makes me a sad panda.
I hope like heck I get my 07 convention registration in before the registration slots run out. They're capped at 3000 this year.

Personally, I think the Thunderbird has a better convention layout than the Marriott ever will without some serious remodeling. One thing that stands out in my mind the most was how tiny the dealer's room was the first yesar...as in I probably would go through the whole thing in 15 minutes everytime I went in there, not to mention most of the events seemed to be located nowhere near each other in the hotel.
Though the rooms are a lot nicer at the Marriott. And I guess I'm staying there since the Thunderbird is full ninja

I just... liked the hallway at the Marriot. Oh, oh, and the courtyard.
The Sheraton that CONvergence is at... = AWESOME. The only issue with that is that the perimeter around the pool/food court thingy is really, really small. I find that anime conventions tend to have people in big poofy skirts and dresses (take my girlfriend for instance... >.>), more-so than all the sci-fi geeks.
Ah, I love CONvergence. Only been once, but I have never felt so very freaking cool in my life, while at the same time, being all hyped up on Jello Shots, sugarrrrrr, and a general "YYEEAAHHH, XXEEENNNAA~!!! |n/(>o<)" mood.

Yes, but sci fi geeks in mass numbers have more pointy objects, and should be given the same distance. xd The Sheraton is amazing though. But I believe part of the amazing at the Sheraton is they rent out the whole damn hotel, it's a geek palace for one golden weekend. Thunderbird still reserves some areas for them thar normal people. (But granted, their reactions are fun. They haven't a clue what is going on) Ensign - They dried up CON huh? When I went in 2005 I think it was, it was geek mardi gras. I don't want to know how many geeky little babies were drunkenly concieved that night. gonk That said, it was ridiculously fun watching the drunks, but I could understand why they might want to tame it a little. I imagine that sort of behavior, not to mention the amount of minors that had no problem/would have no problem getting alcohol, is a HUGE liability issue.
