I.Am Yeah... I don't know if you know this, Waters, but men don't like to be considered anything less then the bravest you possibly could be. sweatdrop To say that "You have to be really brave to go in there," says that we aren't as brave as people who do go in there. Even worse, it implies that we aren't as brave as Pro-Choicers, our opponents, who go in there. It comes as a challenge. And, since it's something we don't plan on doing, and that you know we don't plan on doing, it's an unwelcome and insulting challenge. I know the thread has moved on, but I've had classes and tons of Finacial Aid trouble to deal with, so I'm behind. I guess being a female (though really a "guy" in that almost all of my friends are males, and I tend to do more guy-like things, video games, checking out chicks, drinking, etc. and don't really do chick-like things, make-up (don't even know how to put it on), checking out guys, giggling, etc.) I don't really understand this. I don't consider myself to be a coward, but I know people who are far braver than I am. I think that people who bungee jump are brave (though, in my opinion also somewhat stupid, as I am just terrorfied of heights) and are braver than I am. I think that people who capture and tag bears are far braver than I am. I was not aware that some people feel that having an action they choose not to do being called brave is a challenge. (I really hope you don't go out and try to tag bears while bungee jumping *grin* just a joke, please don't feel that you need to prove that you are "that brave" by doing something dangerous, I would hate to think that you might harm yourself trying to live up to some challenge you feel I might have just issued, though I do believe that you are far, far more intelligent than that!) Is there a word that would be better? I hope you somewhat understood what I was trying to say, that it is really hard to go into the Debate as a Pro-Lifer, and that I understand why so many Pro-Lifers choose not to. As I hate few things more than being unintetionally insulting, I would love to have a better term to describe this particular activity.

Master Kaiser Ya really, Waters is only explaining to us what is going on, and at least we are getting an honest pro-choice opinion on the matter. I'd advise you both to take in what they might think of what we are before being brash. Thank you Waters, for your input and kindness. I hope we can provide better hospitality than what was given to us in the PCG (well at least in my experience). Since the PCG has occasionally been unkind even to me (due to my ignoring and somewhat berrating of a member, my hatred of the term "anti-choice" *shivers*, and my being allowed to join this Guild and subsiquent link to here) I do understand that it is not always a nice place. Though I do hope that the few Pro-Lifers still allowed in (is it just Mcphee?) are usually treated well in there... As I always take my status of guest here somewhat tentatively, I think that all replies were more than just. If I offend someone, I wish them to tell me (unless it is one of the couple of people in here I know are on my ignore list, in which case they just can't tell me if I offend them and so I will not be aware of any offense they might take), so that I can be sure not to use the offensive terms or better explain my statement, or both. This is not my Guild, and I remember this at all times. If something I do angers someone, I want to know, so that I can say I am sorry, and not do it in the future. I don't think that telling me that I was offensive or wrong is something members should keep from doing, as then I will just create unrest rather than spread information (when I can) and try to promote tolerance. I do thank you for "sticking up" for me though! It is nice to know that there are people in here who will speak for me if they feel I am being treated unfairly!

I've been posting in the Abortion Thread all weekend and there's been one Pro-Life person in there and he's questionable. I hate being ganged up in there all the time cry Well, that is what the situation is in the Debate. Pro-Choicers tend to stick around, and lurk the thread. Pro-Lifers, for whatever personal reasons, leave and don't tend to keep up on the thread so they don't usually go in when a fellow Pro-Lifer might need some backup. Though the quality of one's point sometimes does help to keep one from feeling attacked by the other side. If you make a good point (instead of repeating the same thing that other Pro-Lifers have been saying for the entire life of this current Debate thread and the previous one, like most Pro-Lifers who go in seem to do) usually you will get more origional and less angry answers. KP, when he is feeling safe and sane enough to grace the Debate with his wonderous presence, often brings up some interesting and intelligent new points (even if sometimes some people have turned it into a horrible blood bath afterwards). But yeah, it sure would be nice if more Pro-Lifers were able to stand the Debate long enough to help out fellow Pro-Lifers who end up being the only visible target for the debate-happy Pro-Choicers who lurk in the Debate. You might want to check out the Pro-Life ED thread. I believe it is slightly less Pro-Choicer overrun.

I was working on the beginning of a big long explanation of the situation. But after thinking about it a little I decided a more direct approach would be better here.
While it is true that there are an unproportionally high number of pro-aborts in ED. Their numbers alone are only part of the problem. If I had to list all of the reasons behind it, i'd be here for a really long time. So I'm only going to stick to the major issues that i've observed.
First off and worst of all, is the combination of; 1- the sheer number of pro-aborts able and willing to contest any and EVERY pro-life/anti-abortion view expressed. 2- the utter and complete disdain (borderlining even on hatred) some of them hold for any person with a view or opinion on abortion not compatible with their own. 3- the ideologically self-absorbed attitude they debate with. Now I understand that a lot of people from many different groups are like that. I see it a lot when debating with extreme religious people and almost always when debeting with the left, particularly the neo-left. Basically people who can't look/see past their own social or ideological theories and beliefs. To the extent where opposition to those views are met with arrogance, contempt, insult, scorn and sometimes even anger or hate. The idea that one couldn't conceive that someone could have an opinion different to or in opposition to their own on such issues.
Now I admit that the above could be said true of people of either side in this debate. But when added with the all out belligerent tenacity of their debate style in ED. It takes on a whole new level.
Whether by choice or by chance, they bombard anyone with a differing view, from all sides. Not giving the time of day to actually make an argument, let alone refute one. One person's views being contested by four, five or more people at once, using a plethora mix of different dubious and sometimes legitimate pro-abortion arguments. The first time you don't/can't reply to even one point in time (no matter how dubious or illogical), they start to gang up, demanding a response. While they and others simultaneously continue to both reply and mock even further.
It's not just a matter of having to debate a whole group of people at once. You also have to refute many different types of arguments at once as well. Sometimes about the same issue. All this while people continually ridicule and mock. And even though you know they aren't taking anything you say seriously anyway..
I'm not even going to get into their inventing new, highly spurious arguments based on logical and emotional fallacies, specious reasoning or anything else they could come up with that might even remotely help further their argument. Or the propensity to speak as if their views are 'fact' and everything else is the fantasies of morons. Or how they like to go off claiming a monopoly on the "facts" and "truth" with their opinions and theories... neutral
If I think of something else i'll post it later.
(NOTE! I am not talking about all pro-choicers, just a bunch of the ones in ED and other places. Who act like that.)
So much for a short post... lol Sorry about the rant, i've been up way too long today. whee

Yeah. When I made my little hit-and-run a little while ago, I said something about how there were at least 5 frequent posters of the PC guild, 8 I think, as well as a few other non-guild choicers, and only one Pro-Lifer, one of the Pro-Choicers essentially said, "If you're not going to come in and debate, don't complain about us ganging up on Pro-Lifers."
If I had caught it a while sooner, I would have responded with something like, "Then there would be two Pro-Lifers against 8 Pro-Choicers." Yes, if there were two Pro-Lifers, it would lessen the amount of "damage" the other Pro-Lifer took. But half of an atomic bomb's energy will still kill you. confused Having two Pro-Lifers besought upon, 4-1, is just as damaging in the long run as one Pro-Lifer crushed by 8; It's just more spread out.

Any Pro-Lifer who comes in is going to get a lot of attention, because we like debating and do so at any chance. It takes a lot of (what ever word I'm supposed to use that means "guts" but doesn't make anyone feel bad for not going into the Debate because I don't blame people for not going in) to put up with the five or six Pro-Choice comments for every Pro-Life comment. Heck, it takes a lot of patience just to keep a single conversation going in there. One gets lost in the pages of replies. But that doesn't change the fact that if more Pro-Lifers were willing and able to lurk the Debate, any single Pro-Lifer in there wouldn't feel so singled out and attacked. I can't tell you why Pro-Choicers tend to stick around and lurk for a while and Pro-Lifers don't. But if any other than King Seth, who is usually more willing to insult than actually debate, were willing to hang around, maybe the Debate thread would be a little less unbalanced? Heh. Unbalanced. *grin*

As I said, this isn't meant to be an attack, but just compare the guilds. In the Pro-Choice guild, anything goes. You can say whatever you like about Pro-Lifers and most of the guild will disagree with you. The few who dissent are typically outnumbered. Move to the Pro-Life guild, and it's against guild rules to bash specific Pro-Choicers, or to be unreasonable about Pro-Choicers as a whole. And for eight experienced debators to go in at once would require a) Eight experienced debators who care enough about debating to do it, b) Have the time, and c) Have concentrated the effort beforehand. We've considered it. There's just not enough support. Instead of making two posts: You're still not explaining -why- you should be allowed to make the choice, beyond, "The fetus can't make the choice for itself." We've already said, "Well duh, but that doesn't give you the right to choose to kill it!" You just admitted that infants can't make choices either. But you don't get the legalized choice to kill them! Yeah, I know, they aren't physically attached to you. But that's an awfully convenient argument; That, because the leeching is monetary rather then a physical drawing of nutrients, it's a different situation. And actually, by a link posted in the Pro-Choice guild by Le Chat, the fetus does not take anything from your body for the first two months. Just like a chicken fetus, for the first two months, it feeds off the yolk that's already in the egg, and would just be flushed out in a period otherwise. This wasn't even a site about the abortion debate, this was a medical site; No bias at all, just medical instruction. So, at least for the first two months, that argument doesn't work. Which would eliminate, what, 70% of abortions right there? I'm all for that. Although, most of them would just get shifted to two months later. Nonetheless, that would definitely give the woman time to think about what she's doing; Time to cool down from the "OMG, I can't be pregnant, got to get rid of it!" stage, and actually think about it with a cool head. Consider not having an abortion. Anyways, I'm babbling, because I didn't sleep at all last night and I've got a nagging feeling there's something else I wanted to say, but I've lost it, so I'll just post this.

Anyways, I'm babbling, because I didn't sleep at all last night and I've got a nagging feeling there's something else I wanted to say, but I've lost it, so I'll just post this. I am not making the same point in two seperate threads, so read/reply in the other "AJ is wrong because she's Pro-Choice" thread (joking! joking!). I think that there are just as many angry, attacking, flaming Pro-Lifers as there are Pro-Choicers, and I've seen this guild get just as vicious. I feel that both of us are biased, so maybe it's hard for each of us to see the "bad" people on our respective sides (though, as I'm sure many of you know, there are a few Pro-Choicers I just can't talk to or be around because of how angry and immature they are about this entire issue). Bashing and flaming in general is against the very rules of Gaia, but it still happens. And I've seen it happen, rarely, in both guilds. But most people, on BOTH sides are more mature than that. One of the main problems with the Pro-Choice Gaians Guild is that it has almost twice as many members as this guild, and so there might be the same percentage of jerks, but that equals out to more people over all. But in the Debate, I would say that a higher percentage of Pro-Lifers end up flaming, though this very well could be due to the fact that only one or two Pro-Lifers are ever in there at one time, so there is just more stress and strain put on them, and many just can't keep up their side of the debate without resorting to name calling (I remember one from the old debate thread that had been keeping up her side of the argument rather well, then threw a fit and called everyone some name and stormed out). That was a really, really long sentence. I agree, there really aren't that many Pro-Lifers willing to debate for any period of time, let alone on a regular basis (other than King Seth, who I have to give credit to, since he's been around for quite some time and on a more frequent basis than many Pro-Lifers are willing to subject themselves to the flood of Pro-Choice attention in the Debate). Really, I don't see any way to solve the problem, other than importing Professional Pro-Life Debators from somewhere else (Ireland must have some, right?). Short of that, I don't think that the Debate is going to become any less Pro-Choice heavy (with some percentage of angry or occasionally attacking Pro-Choicers). The Pro-Life thread seems to be a little more information heavy and less Pro-Choice occupied. Perhaps people in here who are fed up with the Debate but still interested in the topic might consider checking it out.

Actually, to say that the Pro-Choice guild is more prone to a higher amount of viciousness because of their numbers is inaccurate. They have more members, but we have more posts, so, theoretically, we would be more likely to have hate threads, etc. But we don't. Ya'll do. I'm pretty sure I've linked you to the lovely thread about me before. Yes, people in here bash people in the Pro-Choice guild. But almost every time a mod tells them, "You can't do that here." It's not the same way in the Pro-Choice guild.
I was not saying, at all, that there are more angry and hateful Pro-Choicers then there are Pro-Lifers. But the Pro-Choicers are less moderated, and, in fact, the moderators are far more likely to join in on the bashing then moderators in the PLG.
I don't know about the debate thread. I would guess that it's probably hate filled all around. Yes, as you said, the percentage would of course be higher with the Pro-Lifers because there's only a small number of them, and it's more likely that someone who is willing to fight fire with fire will stay in the thread then someone like me, who is tired of the fighting and name calling.
