You stayed back in second grade because you didn't have a teacher. Any chance it was like the situation in that story MU wrote god-knows-how-long-ago about the rebellious kids who killed the teacher?
(I wish I had a link but I forgot where I found it in the first place...reading your post just made me wonder)
