As the night goes on, you learn that Steve was unable to control his power (he never actually mentions what that power is) when he was young, and was therefore disowned, and taken in by a shape-change named Marriox, who was doing a similar thing to what he's doing now. Marriox (who still runs his own shelter like this in another part of town) raised him to always help others in need, hence why he's found himself taking care of all these others. Some of them are rather powerful mutants, and so those who hold to his ideals drive out those who don't, and everyone who is allowed to stay remains friendly and peaceful. Even the police leave them alone, since more mutants in there means less on the street causing trouble.
When you finally bid them farewell, you feel you've made some friends, gained some knowlege... but, most importantly, gained some perspective.
