Lyon smirked despite his best effort to keep his face relaxed. He rolled his shoulders into a shrug. “You’re pretty intense, Stirling. Remind me not to get on your bad side.”
What kind of girl thinks about chopping people up and mounting their heads where she can see them?
“Anyway, I doubt I’ll get too ******** up.”
He took a step backwards, planting his hands on his hips and leaning back as he stretched some.
“Even if I’m set up to lose, I usually come out on top. Or close enough that it doesn’t matter. I’m lucky like that,” he shrugged. Of course he’d seen losses. His shoulder hurt–throbbed–right now, and for what? He hadn’t strained it, hadn’t overworked himself.
He stretched again. “We all have to start somewhere. Being a page hasn’t been so bad for me. Besides,” he batted his eyes at her. “I’ve got so many strong, wonderful, beautiful Knights ready to rescue me if I get in over my head, right?”

“I’m glad that there’s at least someone I don’t have to hold back with. It’s. Refreshing to just–” Stirling cut herself off and shrugged. “I wouldn’t disembowel you, most likely. Promise.” It was more than she could offer to some people, and hopefully Lyon would understand that.
She had to chuckle at his flattery and finally shrugged. “Yeah maybe. We’ll do our best, at least. And I’ve got my shield. If you promise to stay behind it, I promise to put it in front of you.”
Strong, wonderful, beautiful Knights, sure. They were trying. That was all that they could do. “I just want it to be over. Hopefully Damh here will help that come sooner rather than later...is…there any more that you're burning to see? You’re welcome back here anytime, just so you know. I don’t mind, I never mind visiting up here.

Lyon squinted at her for a moment, as if scrutiny might reveal to him how many people Stirling considered disemboweling, or how often such an action crossed her mind.
“For real? Not about the disemboweling, I’ll hold you to that. I mean about visiting. I don’t know if there’s anything more that I’m burning to see, but I’d like to see this place when the sun’s up sometime, maybe. I mean, how many times do you get to explore a real castle?”
With weird, creepy animals, but–well, Lyon was a city boy, after all. Maybe the other animals she had around would be a little smaller. He wouldn’t complain if they were a little cuter, too.
Damh had smart eyes, and Lyon wasn’t sure if he could read minds, so he smiled politely at the deer. The handsome deer, he thought loudly. Just in case.
“Maybe I can come up again soon and you can show me all the cool places. I haven’t seen much of my Wonder yet, but once I figure out if it’s safe, you can visit.”
And if it wasn’t safe–
Well, she could still visit. She was so strong and had such a big shield.
…And honestly, she could probably be just as scary as whatever it was, if she wanted.
