Ella lugged down the hall, staggering with her heavy pink suitcase being dragged behind her. She was late, very late. She had gotten lost in the winding hallways, missed the opening ceremony, and just barely located her dorm house of Ekaterina. This all made her anxieties grow and her heart raced from fear.

When she entered the large commons area, her eyes widened and mouth fell agape with a gasp. The maps, the books, the atmosphere as a whole tingled Ella's senses. A broad smile went cheek to cheek on her face. At least she would be happy with her living spaces.

Naomi finished writing the proposal, reviewed it twice, and, satisfied, folded it up and sealed it. "Basket," she called, and her scruffy owl flitted to the desk. Naomi fixed the proposal to his leg and offered her arm. The owl hopped on her arm and she headed down the stairs. All she had to do was let him out outside, and then she just had to wait for his repl-

She stopped at the foot of the stairs. A new girl? Well, late arrivals showed up all the time in the Academy, so she supposed it wasn't really out of place. Remembering her role as house rep, Naomi quickly smoothed out her skirt and stepped up the meet the girl. "Another new student? Name's Naomi Pritchett, I'm Ekat house rep," she said without waiting for a reply. "I'm guessing you like books?" While the girl waited on her answer, Naomi quickly opened the door behind her and released Basketcase. The owl flew off. Satisfied, Naomi shut the door and turned towards the blonde expectantly.

Ella found herself being approached by another member of the house, and when they spoke, it knocked her out of her trance of amazement. She made a quick bow and tried not to stutter as she spoke, "H-house rep? It's very nice to meet you. I'm glad the first person I've met is my representative," She stopped, "I-I mean, yes, I like books. History mainly, non-fiction, that sort of thing." She was already smacking herself in the forehead on the inside, announcing those kinds of interests so early in meeting someone always led to her being deemed the nerd of the school.

She tried to change topic, "Is that your owl? It's amazing owls can be trained to do such things. I was told I'd be assigned one...but I guess that doesn't matter much yet, seeing as I haven't even found my room yet." She knew she was rambling, but she did have a lot of questions and her mind wouldn't stop swirling until she had gotten everything sorted out.

Naomi allowed herself a smile. This girl sure asked a lot of questions. Putting on her best official-rep face, she nodded. "I thought so. We've got plenty of books and maps, but nobody reads them much. Ekat's main draw is that we arrange expeditions into the forest and the Catacombs, the Catacombs more often - there are some ruins down there that are pretty neat." She gestured out the window. "That scruffy thing was my owl, yeah. He's called Basket, short for Basketcase. There are plenty of school owls that can send letters if you need to. And the dorms are upstairs," she finished. "Girls on one side, boys on the other, if you're neither or both you can pick, yadda yadda yadda."

Naomi looked the girl up and down real quick. She was dressed nicely, though not in uniform (that wasn't a problem, since she apparently just arrived) and she seemed to be the pinnacle of cute and innocent. Poor dear. I wonder how long that's going to last. "Anyway, just bring your luggage upstairs, pick a bunk, and get settled in. I'll let the headmaster know you've arrived next time I see him."

"C-catacombs?" Ella said quietly and nervously. The only time she had read about catacombs were from scripts about tombs and torture chambers of old. She didn't think she would be highly interested in exploring any dark whispering caverns. But then again, it was a magic school, right? They must be different from the resting places of the dead, right? She was sure she would enjoy the books of Ekaterina's assets the best.

Ella was able to lighten up when Naomi mentioned the name of her owl. She giggled a little, finding the name to be cute and comical, "I can't wait to get my own owl then. I love cute animals like that." She smiled, "Thank you for the information. I'll go put my stuff away then and get changed. Do you know where I should go after that? Is there anything I should do before classes begin?"

Naomi pointed down. "Catacombs. Big tunnel system that stretches under the town, the woods, and the school. Home to some pretty neat places, but, ah, avoid the Candy Shop." She winked. "Strictly speaking, we're not actually allowed to enter the Catacombs, but technically speaking we are. Soulstone left a loophole in the rule on purpose." She flopped down on one of the couches, sick of standing. This girl sure was curious. She was practically a generic Ekat. Interesting. Naomi wondered if Nina and her would get along.

"Well, classes are a bit wonky at the moment, so I'd just suggest finding all the ones that you're in for now. If you're a first year, that'd be..." She counted. "Charms, Elements, Creatures, SOM, Magic Theory, Potions, Channeling, and Meditation. Also, if you want to explore the forest, don't go without a partner, or I'll get in trouble, 'kay? And, uh, so will you." She stretched in her seat. "So what's your name, kid?"

Oh, good... Ella said to herself. Naomi had answered all her questions. Her worries started to disperse and her heart finally began to calm down. It was a huge relief. She now knew her classes, her dorms, the surrounding areas, and not to eat from the candy shop. That was plenty to help her through her first day. She still regretted being late...the opening ceremony would have probably saved her a lot of trouble.

                    "So what's your name, kid?"

Ella jolted. Had she really forgotten to introduce herself? What kind of manners were that? She blushed from embarrassment, "My name is Ella. Ella Aldaval. It's very nice to meet you. You've surely saved me for this first day."

Innocent AND naive. And she likes me, to boot. "It's my job as house rep, Ella," Naomi said aloud. "If you have any questions, ask me. The dorm is kind of quiet at the moment, but soon enough it should pick up." As she spoke, Naomi glanced Ella up and down. What was she? Her best bet was a human, but Ella's rich green eyes made her second-guess herself. Was she an elf? No, her ears weren't long and pointe-

Wait a minute. There, at the tips, just a tiny little point. A half-elf, huh. Interesting. "So, Ella, where you from? Kids here come from all over, y'know. We have a fourth year who's German."

"Western America. A flower shop in a small town in the rockys. Basically, no where of being noteworthy..." Ella sighed. She said that, but she missed home already. She missed the aroma of flowers and herbs and the quiet winds of the countryside. At least she hadn't left any friends behind...

"So, Germany. That's very cool. Where are you from, Naomi? If that's not private, I mean."

An American, huh? She certainly came a long way. "Oh, I'm Welsh," Naomi said. "I live in a nice big manor by the ocean. Much bigger than these stuffy dorms, but at least I'm not a Tomas so I can't complain." She laughed lightly. "There aren't a lot of Americans here, I don't think, but the language debarrier makes that a bit less of a problem." Naomi certainly couldn't complain. There had been a kid or two last year that had been American. He was one of the most obnoxious boys that Naomi had ever met and she was glad that he had dropped out. Good riddance. "So what path are you hoping to go for? I'm on the, er, enchanter's path myself."

Ella was surprised. Not very many Americans? This would honestly be her first time meeting people from a different country, but she figured that was just typical american of her. Especially being from a small town, she never met anyone other than close neighbors. This prospect of meeting new cultures excited her. She hoped no one would be put off by her own lineage.

"Path?" Ella questioned, then remembered a bit of the syllabus, "Oh, of course! A particular study of interest," She reminded herself aloud, "Honestly, I don't know yet. I didn't even know magic existed before receiving my acceptance letter and showing my mother... I mean, it still is all too surreal for me to even think I might have a talent in some field of magic. I think I will decide later in the year, once I know how classes and magic work. Maybe I'll find something that interests me?" She was embarrassed by her obviously freshman answer.

"Sheltered kid, huh? There aren't a lot of those these days," Naomi muttered. "Most people go for the moneymaking paths, like enchanting or healing or chemist or alchemist. Those paths are the ones that rake in the dough, at least in the magick world." She stretched in her seat. "If you live in the mundane world, though, that's another story. It'd be interesting to see what kind of paths would apply there." Really, though, why shelter the girl? It wasn't like the magick world was terrible and bad. Or maybe the mother saw some prejudice coming what with her daughter being a half-breed and all.

"I know something about living in the mundane world too, y'know. My dad runs this company for the mundanes, and my mom works as a healer. My brother isn't a magick like I am, so he never came here." Naomi frowned. How had Jasper been doing? Nah, she decided. She didn't care that much.

The mundane world? Ella was curious about the term, but when Naomi mentioned her brother, she realized it meant those without magic. When Naomi described paths and what would be of use in the "mundane world" Ella started to think deeply. She hadn't thought that far yet. Would she use her magic in the world? Would she move on to live with magicks and not return home? It made her head spin. She didn't want to just abandon her mother, but at the same time, wanted to make use of the gift that was just presented to her.

Tired of standing during the conversation, Ella sat down on a sofa that was across form Naomi.

"I really just don't know..." Ella felt down on herself, "How can I pick a path when I don't even know what magic really is yet? When I haven't even used it? I don't even know if I have any talent in magic. I feel like I'm here purely on a whim. Like, at any moment I could wake up and none of this will exist anymore. It doesn't feel real. I don't mean to insult you or this school, I just wish I had some proof that I actually belong here."

Averill Hammershod

Averill shuffled into the common room, green eyes practically dancing.
"I did it! He cheered, punching a bronzey fist into the air. It was holding his wand, which was glowing.

The short half-dwarf boy skipped up to the only other two people in the common room, eager to show off his victory. He waved the lit wand obnoxiously around.
"Naomiiii! I managed to cast a lumos!"
He traced out a circle in the air with glee, then his eyes settled on the new girl.
"Oh! This is someone I haven't met before. Hi I'm A-V-E-R-.." He proceeded to spell out his name in the air with his glowing wand.
It wasn't actually very effective, as the wand-light didn't exactly leave a trail behind. In the common rooms 'lumos' had the same mediocre impact as playing with a sparkler during the day.
"...-I-L-L!" When he finally finished spelling his name, he toned it down a bit and offered the non-wand hand.
"Averill Hammershod, first year, Ekat, caster of all things lumos-y according to week ones charms homework" He couldn't help boasting. This was a big thing! He'd never done a spell before!

After a moment, he coughed and looked down at his wand, flicking it a little.
"Um. When does it /stop/ glowing?" He asked Naomi a little sheepishly.

Jennalaia
lol apparently we dont learn 'nox' to turn off the lumos until the second week bahahaha

"Don't feel too pressured, you're only a first year and there are a lot of options." Naomi waved a hand. "There's someone else that came here from a mundane family at first, actually, I remember she used to cry every night when she was a first ye-"

And then Averill barreled down the stairs. Naomi looked up and blinked. Well, it looked like he was ready to go into the Catacombs... sort of. She sighed and stood up. "Did Pilon not teach you how to put it out? Never mind, I got it." She drew her wand and touched the tip of Averill's. "Nox," she murmured, for show, of course, and the tip of Averill's wand stopped glowing. "You'll be learning that charm next, and then after that I think the seals on the Catacombs should open up and we can finally start planning expeditions again. Also, Averill, if you light that thing up in the middle of the night I will personally walk over there and snap that thing in half." Naomi smiled sweetly.
