Keegan clipped a zombie as he rubbed the back of his head, embarrassed beyond reason.
"I'm fine, but, um, your gun, I uh, lost it. I uh, kinda misplaced it in the explosion."

Leah jerked up sharply, staring at Lilith. Sleep? Oh s**t, no, you can't sleep with a head injury. The b***h was trying to kill her. She was going to kill her and steal her dog!
No. No that was crazy. It was far more likely that Lilith was a well meaning dumbass. Oh ********, she was surrounded by people with no medical background. She was going to die. Had to keep head clear. Keep yourself awake. If she fell asleep she might slip into a coma. God dammit, it was so hard to keep a train of thought.
A sharp wave of nausea quickly woke her up. Apparently the poor quality of the roads was going to save her. She'd be sure to write a letter to her city councilman.
The others were talking, something about a gun. And an explosion. Holy s**t, there had been an explosion. She'd hit her head badly. If she was lucky, it was a concussion. If she was unlucky, she had a subdural hematoma and her brain would drown in blood. If she had any kind of serious hemorrhaging going on she was going to die. Which, considering how badly her head hurt, was seeming like less and less of a downside.
Wait. Her meatshields were injured. She was supposed to be doing something. God dammit, she needed her brain.
Surgery. She needed to get the others to a sterile environment, apply local anesthetic, inject dye, and extract any shrapnel. Bandage, give antibiotics and aspirin for the inflammation, then vodka. For her. God damn she needed a drink. If her brain was going to be this foggy she might as well enjoy it.
"We need to get the shrapnel out," Leah said, her speech and nausea already beginning to clear up. Which was good, because no one wanted a surgeon who slurred, then vomited in your open suture.

Lilith watched as Leah looked blankly at her and then began to speak. "We need to get out of the hot zone zone first, Leah... Are you alright?"
Going through her slightly hazzy memories of the explosion she remembered Leah being slumpted against the truck. "Leah, Did you hit your ********, the last thing we need is the medic out of commission. I know basic field medicine but thats not going to get us through.'
"Keegan, You owe me a new gun, A better one too and I should proberbly be the shooter from now on.Now what's the closest safe zone?"
As the adrenaline from the gass station fight faded the pain from the shard of glass in her back came to the fore. '********, ok. You can do this, what would the boys say if they saw this. Pain is a message from the body and messages can be ignored.'

"Yeah, yeah, I'll try and get you a new gun, though I've no idea where to find one now."
Driving steadily, favouring his tender leg, he turned a corner into a clear side street. "I'd say anywhere outside of the cities is likely to be the safest area. I don't think that whatever turned the people into zombies is airborne, or otherwise we would already be zombies. So, the best thing is distance and try not to be bitten."

Try not to get bitten. With ideas like that, it was no wonder Keegan was the leader.
Leah waited for Keegan to respond with something equally biting before realizing she hadn't actually said anything. Just as well. If she did try to talk it'd probably be a mushy word salad mess. And then she'd forget what she was talking about halfway through and start ranting about chickens.
She'd seen it happen. During her time as a intern she'd spent a couple stints in the ER. Head injuries were tricky. Man with a giant nail in his head had walked in, calm as you please, filled out all the paperwork, didn't even flinch when he went in for surgery. Another woman had come in with a bad bump, seemed fine, then punched out a resident while screaming about her chickens. She died two hours later.
Freya whined, nuzzling Leah's hand. She kept petting the dog while the others talked, repeating mnemonics quietly. Keep it together. "Bones in the wrist," she muttered to the dog. "Scared Lovers Try Positions They Can't Handle: Scaphoid bone, Lunate bone, Triquetral bone, Pisiform bone, Trapezium, Trapezoid bone, Capitate bone, and Hamate bone."
Annie had taught her that, late at night in her old dorm room. Back when they were both going to sign up for Doctors Without Borders, when they were going to travel to Africa and save the world. She'd tasted like day old pizza and redbull.
She was probably dead now. And her old study group. Her professors. Her residency director. Every patient, every doctor, every person she never said hi to in the grocery store is dead. And soon she would be too.
Leah closed her eyes and concentrated harder. "Endocarditis: Pus River," she continued. "Prosthetic valve, uncontrolled infection..."

"Right don't let me monster close enough to bite me... I'll keep that in mind."
Sending a look at Leah who was muttering strange things to the dog Lilith tryed to think taticly.
"Keegan you know anyone far enough out to be safe and close enough to get too quickly? Or should I start calling around?"

Keegan's phone rang a second before he dialed a number. Grinning, he answered it and put it on loud speaker. "Hey Mal, you're on loud speaker. Say hello to Leah and Lilith."
"Ah, pretty ladies I would presume. The only kind you would roll with. Good afternoon ladies. I hope this scoundrel isn't mistreating you."
"Eh, later. So, how's..." a burst of automatic gunfire interrupted Keegan. He waited a moment before Malcom spoke again.
"Sorry Keegs, I've got a little zombie problem. My two-eye-see decided to get himself shot on the range this morning and..." a burst of gunfire, "and the ******** has somehow managed to retain the ability to use my ******** pistols!"
Keegan floored the accelerator. "There in ten minutes. Hold tight."
Another burst of gunfire, followed by swearing ached Keegan's ears. "Yeah, well, come in the back entrance. If you're quick enough, you can roll over all three of them."

"Sounds like a man after my own heart. Whats our ETA?" Lilith was glad that it looked like the team would have another shooter soon enough, after Keegan's last effort she wasn't going to let him near a gun again.
"Leah, are you good for this?" Personally she didn't think the women should even get out of the car but she'd take the medics jugdement of herself.

"About ten minutes and yeah, he probably is. Because he owns a firing range, he has plenty of weapons and ammo at his disposal. The shooting range is also on the outskirts of the city, so escaping the madness here should be easier." Glancing over his shoulder, he looked at Leah, who was looking paler, but less shaky.

"Nope," Leah said to Lilith, pulling out another splint and an ice pack. Gritting her teeth, she strapped the ice pack to her head with the splint and generous amounts of duct tape. It was going to be a b***h to take off, but it would keep the swelling down and possibly reduce the seriousness of any edema.
"We don't have enough people for me to sit out and I'm in no condition to drive," she continued, highly aware of how ridiculous she looked with that contraption. "I'll keep to the back," she said, preparing another syringe. Now that she was slightly less foggy she'd need to decompress the brain. And since doing surgery on herself was out of the question, she'd need something to reduce the pressure through injection. Mannitol was her best option.
She handed the syringe to Lilith. "Can inject this into the vein?" the doctor asked, offering her arm.

Lilith quickly did as asked and then prepared for contact again. She reloaded her handgun and begun the mental prep that was an integrual part of being a soldier.
"Whats our engagement plan? Drive as close as possable and then fight our way through" It didn't sound like that bad of a plan to her, but the others might have an issue with it.

(Hey, it was ALL I could think of up in a moment for someone who liked guns and witty comments.)
Keegan slowed down for long enough to allow Lilith a moment for the injection. Listening to her question, he grinned into the rear view mirror. "Well, I've been to Mal's shooting range a couple of times before; usually to deliver cars for target practice of some crazy theory he has about cars and guns. Anyway, there's a gate near the back of the compound that has direct access to the target range, near the rear of the building. If I think he is where he is, then he'll be near the shooting range and the zombies likely to be on the field. If not, then my skills will be next to useless."
Taking a wide turn through a large intersection, he rumbled out of the suburbs and into open field. The gun range was in the distance, visible from where they turned off the last road.

"I'm sure it'll all work out," Leah said, gazing out at the field. "Considering how lucky we've been so far. There will probably be cake waiting for us." She had picked up her shotgun; while she didn't plan to shoot unless absolutely necessary, she felt better with it there, in her lap.
Freya growled, pawing at her muzzle as she stared out into the field.

"Yeah, well, you never know when luck may run out."
Turning off the road and into the carpark of the shooting range, a pair of zombies shambled out of the building, guns raised. Keegan floored it, aiming in a wide arch to hit them then the gate afterwards.
Thump. Thump.
Keegan grinned and floored it into the gate. He knew perfectly well that it was a pathetic wooden fence and only a small chain and lock, so he wasn't surprised when the gate shattered, sending shards everywhere. Nor was he surprised that he ran over a zombie in the process. He was faintly surprised that, when he turned onto the firing range, he only had to hit one zombie, which bounced off his hood and was promptly mowed down by automatic rifle fire.
~
Mal fired a few shots, taking down a zombie before ducking behind the barricade. At least they weren't inclined to shoot through the barricade, which was a bonus.
Reloading the rifle with a fresh clip, he paused, hearing the distinctive roar of Keegan's Hummer's engine. Grinning, he waited for a moment before he heard the shattering of the side gate. As the Hummer roared into the shooting range, he popped up to see the zombie bounce off the hood of the truck. Focussed, he raised the rifle and double tapped, hissing the zombie squarely in the head and neck, making it drop. Waving Keegan as close as he could, he shouldered the rifle and picked up a bag of ammunition.
Keegan pulled to a stop in front of the main shooting booths and popped the boot for Mal, who threw his bag into it, along with the rifle.
"Hey Keegs, did you get the two out front?"
"Yeah Mal, was easy enough. Stupid things didn't fire, they just pointed."
"Out of ammo then. Give me a minute to get the other guns and we'll go." Winking at Leah and Lilith, he waved at Lilith, seeing as she looked like she was fine to him. "Wanna help pretty one?"
"Mal! Wait till you're in the bloody car first."
