// I tried breeding my Gyarados with an Arbok. They're both listed under the Dragon group. They did, in fact, have an egg, but it didn't turn out to be shiny. Just gotta keep trying, I suppose. I don't really care all that much for Arbok or Ekans; I just want more shinies. XP

Ah, Ditto. Very reliable for breeding purposes. By Japanese named Pokemon, what do you mean? I'm curious.

Shiny Seviper is pretty cool. I love the green spots on it. >w<
Well if the name of the pokemon is literally in japanese letters, it's supposed to lower the odds of getting a shiny.

// Lower? Don't want that. Nuh uh. As far as I'm aware, none of my Pokemon have Japanese names.

i meant better the odds sweatdrop i believe (dont quote me) there's around a 1 in 8000 chance of getting/running into a shiny but it's lowered to 1 in 5000 with a japanese named or shiny pokemon

// I tried breeding various types of Pokemon with my shiny Seviper and Gyarados, but none of the eggs turned out to be shiny. I knew it wouldn't be a guaranteed thing, but some eggs require over 10k steps before they hatch. I can't help it if I want a shiny Dratini...

Nonetheless, I'll keep trying.

There's a 1 in 8,192 chance of getting a shiny. By breeding with one shiny, the hatched Pokemon has 1/8 chance of being shiny. In GSC, due to shininess depending on IVs and Pokémon inheriting IV's from parents, an egg bred from two shinies has a 1/64 chance of being shiny. Meh, math...

Breeding with a shiny to increase the chance of getting another shiny only works in G/S/C. Breeding a shiny in any later generation won’t increase your chances of producing another shiny pokémon, so breeding your shiny Seviper isn’t going to help you.

As for the number of steps it takes...that’s why you get Flame Body or Magma Armor! 3nodding (Although too bad that isn’t an option in Generation II. sweatdrop )

I think you mean “increase the odds of getting a shiny.”

Also, it has nothing to do with the pokémon’s name being in Japanese letters, but the pokémon being generated in a game in a different language. This can be French, German, Spanish, etc. Any language other than the language your game is in. Japanese just happens to be the easiest to get your hands on because, well, the games come from Japan, so there are a lot of players in Japan.

This method is called Masuda method and works in Generation IV and V, with an increased chance in Generation V (1 in 1366 chance in Generation V compared to a 1 in 2048 chance in Generation IV). It was also how I hatched my shiny Zorua in Black.

I got a Japanese Axew off of the GTS. I’m going to try for shiny Axew after I see if I can hatch another shiny Zorua. 3nodding

// That's not something to be ashamed of in my opinion. I wish I was a bigger geek. Unfortunately, I still have some ways to go, especially considering how old school I am.

But if I get any more Pokemon obsessed, my sisters just might throw me out of the house. emotion_8c

I think I can spend too much time talking about Pokémon, but otherwise I don’t care if I’m a geek. P: If it bothers too many people IRL, I can just vent my obsession here (which I do most of the time). <3

Oh, now we’re getting off-topic again.

Heh, I guess I'll share my 'dumb story'. I apologize in advance due to that this happened 'forever ago' so I cannot specifically state how long ago only that it was around the time Silver/Gold was new in America.

Now I'm pretty sure this was in Silver, but alas I played Silver n Gold back to back then Crystal as soon as I got my little mitts on it.

I recall going around doing my usual thang of playing pokemon I was kinda excited I had just escaped the clutches of the forest and came across the Pokemon Daycare center. They gave me an egg I accepted due to rampant personal curiosity. I walked around did my own thing all I knew then was eggs hatched eventually. Eventually I was shocked to see it hatch out of nowhere and out came a Cleffa with some weird effect I had assumed was 'egg hatched pokemon' It confused me that it looked kinda sickly green and I chalked it up to a 'whatever. Later as I trained it for pokedex purposes it became a Clefairy which I was not thrilled with considering Im rather not fond of the pokemon. That's when I noticed it still had that weird sickly kind of green coloring. Some research and I had discovered I had a shiny pokemon before even getting to Red Garydose. Most trainers would have been shocked or thrilled and I might have been were I properly informed. Instead I was slightly offended I got a shiny of one of the pokemon I liked the least so I boxed it till one day it got a happy home in a friends game who actually cared for it properly.

There ya go~

omg lol. At least you didn’t do like some trainers - see the sickly green color and be like, “My game is glitching! *shuts off gameboy without saving*” xd

Well, I've only caught one shiny while re-playing my lil brothers emerald.
I was actually at a friend's house(her and her cousin and I were geeking out over pokemon) when we all decided to just play a game. I restarted my brother's emerald and when I got to Route 116 to train, a nincada jumped out at me. I hadn't payed much attention to it at first, but when I finally looked at it, I saw it looked waaaaaaaay to different from a normal one. I battled it and captured it, calling it Naru(it looked orange-ish to me and naruto wears orange...not to mention ninjask).
I was so excited, as that was my first time catching or even seeing a shiny. When my friend mentioned it was technically my brothers...well, I decided to not tell him and transfer it to my Platinum where I evolved it and got two shinies~ >w< They are both now in my Black version. ^w^

After that though, a friend has given me a shiny he raised and didn't want. But I have yet to see one again or hatch one. TwT

I hate shinies. Period. If I have any, it's because they were given to me.
