i know more than you
Ken Lloyd has Japanese blood...and I don't know about Anna whatsherface, so no opinion. But pretty much every non-japanese person in a band I've ever noticed have been the gaijin.

Anna has Japanese blood too - I think she's half Japanese brought up in America.

As for contributors to JRock. I don't know about from the beginning, but certainly recently, there are a few names that always spring up because everybody knows them.

hide, because he was famous and he died, and everybody, especially the Japanese have a fascination with death (You know the most popular exhibit in the British Museum is the mummy the have there, and it's always most popular among the Japanese)

Gackt, becuase you can't mistake his plastic face for anybody else's. It is on everything, and so's he. sweatdrop

L'arc~en~Ciel, because they do a lot of work and put a lot of effort into publicity and keeping on top of the market. As well as that, the do a lot of anime themes, so they're well known.

GLAY, because they're 10 or 15 years old now (I have no idea which, last year, I swear I saw a magazine about their 15th year, but this year they just erected a statue celebration their 10th year in Shinjuku) (... hey, there is a GLAY statue. *wail*), and becuase apparently they revolutionalised rock and made it acessible. The fact that it then became rock pop is out of the question. ... I don't like GLAY.

Uh. Yeah.

2. Japanese people will laugh at you if you say you like visual kei. The kind of laugh where they snort soda out their nose.

There's a viskei scene. It's not anywhere near mainstream, but it's something people like. It's not that much of a joke. They'd just think you're strange.

i know more than you
...this has already come up in the OTHER jrock guild. You're an American, and to all the Japanese, you're still going to be a gaijin whether or not you sing in their language.
CURIOUSLY. What does that make Ken Lloyd and Anna what'sherface from Spin Aqua? And.. other non-Japanese artists. In Japan.

It makes Ken Lloyd awesome. 3nodding

Shizuka Hikari
Yes I do indeed live in America. If you want to think of it the way you do then we'll just say I'm an American girl that plays rock in Japanese, if that makes you ahppy. You don't have to be japanese to be a j-rocker(again this is my opinion) and just because I live in Arizona doesn't make me american. In fact most of me isn't american.

Here's the way I put it.

"I'm in an American band. We sing mostly in Japanese. I'm a gaijin. Deal with it. But I know Japanese people who love me anyway, so I don't give a s**t. lol "

But being in denial about not being a J-Rocker won't make that fact go away. surprised I would never call myself a J-Rocker. For it is not true.

On another note...I hate how most people in America only know about X-Japan. stressed They weren't that great. We can all name hundreds of bands better than them.

It was the countdown for the 40 awesomely bad metal bands or something. I wonder why they picked Loudness instead of X Japan, though. xd

Yes. I know that there is a visual scene. I knew many of the people that participated in it.
Just the general public, if you were to say "Oh, I like Japanese music." and they were to ask "What kind?" if you were to answer "visual kei" they snort. The laugh from the back of the nose, where they're trying not to laugh because it's rude but the sound can't help but escape from them.
They all know what visual kei music is. and that is why they laugh.
I've seen it plenty of times. It was rather funny.

I know I know. It just pisses me off when people go on an on about how VK has zero popularity in Japan --dude, the bands have fans ._.

From my experience, people aren't that knowledgeable as to what it is. They just say something like "oh those freaks stare "

What exactly is visual kei music though? Are you saying VK is a genre? o.o

Technically you could divide bands up by v-kei and non-v-kei and then do sub-divisions by music genre.

But then there's bands that just fall between the cracks of those two categories...

The Japanese music industry is quite a fickle and confusing thing. whee
