A solid understanding of traditional art. Is actually still needed in many professional. That involve digital art as a medium. On top of that, once you actually learn how to properly work with a particular program. You can make a work of art in four minutes. That would take you normally twenty plus freehand. This in no way implies that digital art is superior. In fact, I'd venture to say that it is a much less effective method of training.
It is like Tracing, most people understand. That freehand requires more skill than freehand to skillfully do. What some don't understand. Is that by practicing freehand. When you actually try tracing after practicing in this higher tier. Your traced picture will have a much higher quality. Than if you just training in tracing. Something that is in a higher tier than even freehand. Is actually a method an experienced abstract artist taught me. While drawing, you just look at the picture you are trying to draw. You do not at any time look at the paper while you are drawing. While doing this, you will greatly increase your freehand accuracy. And since this is above freehand AND tracing. This method of training will increase your accuracy for both of them.
