The sodden boy was shivering terribly as his mocha skin was exposed to the bite of the cold, but he was stripped and re-clothed with insane speed; the muscled Cane's fingers making light work of Wynn's clothing - surprisingly nimble for a youth with such brawl. Scyeth seemed to be doing his part too, despite being injured, and Rufus felt a little pang of irritation when he was denied the chance to do his own job regarding the gloves. Whenever the man attempted to pry the wet animal skin covers off the boy's hands, Wynn would snatch them away as if he didn't want Rufus anywhere near them; although the tourist couldn't begin to fathom why this might be. Luckily the boy's lower half seemed to have escaped the wet and the socks didn't need to be replaced.. Perhaps they could offer a different use. "If you won't let me replace your gloves.. Rufus sighed, "at least put these over your hands to keep some heat in." He gave the boy the woollen socks and attempted a smile - the cheerful knitted sheep gazed out of them up at the sky above, bloated with heavy snow clouds, did not fit with the serious nature of the situation, a small fragment of the easier climate Rufus was used to..

Now that Wynn was mostly dried off and garbed in fresh non-soaked clothes it seemed about time to press onwards. Cane had earlier said that he thought that they were close to their destination and Rufus hoped to the heavens that he was right. ((Despite the fact that those heavens had apparently denied them an easy journey in the first place, according to the villagers.))

"I'll take someone's bag.. He announced as he strode to the front of the party. "Cane was carrying Scyeth, Wynn nearly froze to death and Scyeth has a bad ankle. It's about time I took some of the flak." He glanced at Wynn who was shouldering his bag full of wet clothing that he'd refused to leave. "Let me take that?" He requested, pointing to the bag. "It's the least I can do to repay your bravery on the ice.."

Wynn looked at the ovine-themed socks, sucking gently at his lips in thought. He glanced once, twice, between the offered socks and the tourist before he quietly accepted them. Wynn had to acknowledge that the tourist was doing all he could be helpful and his bitter attitude probably wasn't helping. He whispered a small thank you, took the socks and quietly fitted them over his gloved hands. Slowly, he began to feel an improvement, and he hoped that his fingers wouldn't catch frostbite or that he would come down with hypothermia. the best thing to have done is make a fire, but there was a dim chance that it was going to happen. All they could do was get him dry and as warm as they could, which they did their best of. The cold and spirits would decide the rest. With that worry looming over his shoulders, he still wouldn't take off his gloves though. Only Cane knew out of this group, and Wynn didn't want anyone else to find out.

So, with his freezing hands covered with socks, Wynn quietly surrendered his backpack to the kind tourist and started pressing on through the snow, following the river. He tottered forward on his own two legs and wrapped his arms around him tight, shivering violently despite the rest of the group's best efforts.

Rufus was the only one amongst them who was still talking. The silence was growing heavier, making Scyeth increasingly uncomfortable. The blond frowned. At least Wynn had the right idea. "Wait up!" The demon frowned deeper and hobbled as fast as his injury would allow, trying to catch up with the little bundle. For Luna's sake, how could Wynn walk faster than him? He had fallen through the frigid ice, and he was still moving faster.

Deeply disturbed by his failure to be even remotely capable with an injury, Scyeth pushed harder, stuffing down the shooting pain in the name of pride. It was practically a miracle he caught up with the smaller native; it was even more of a struggle to keep pace. Before long, the blond was practically hopping on one leg. Determined glare set in place, Scyeth limped a little harder. So maybe there would be damage done, later. But he was a soldier, and by heaven and hell, he was going to act like one.

It was a little later that the demon realized they weren't really heading towards anything at all.

You travel along the river until you find a larger body of water. There is ice here too, but the water appears to be much shallower, so perhaps it's safer to- Is that a bear over towards the far end of the lake? Why yes. Yes it is! Do you risk it?

Cane had been silent as they continued, and as the water became shallower, easier to cross, he began looking for the best area to do so. That was how he saw it. A bear. His totem.

"Ho, friends. Stop." He didn't halt his movements, heading to the front of the group, where Wynn stood. A thick finger pointed out the creature and he spoke, voice low. "We should cross here, before we get closer to him. Our brother should not be interested in us. Speak, calmly to one another, so he knows we are not regular prey. Do not raise your voices."

A smile. Cane really, really liked bears, and they weren't confrontational animals. In fact, unless you were in a bear's personal space [something they were far from being in], they tended to ignore or avoid humans. Occasionally, the curious sort would try to catch a whiff of your scent, but that was about it.

"Walk slowly, eh, friends? We do not want to give him reason to think we are worth chasing!" A slight, rumbly chuckle as his arm reached for Scyeth. "Let me help you cross the wet rocks?" It was quiet, a request, not a command.

Wynn, taking heed of Cane's quiet warning paused his step, trying his best to stop his chattering teeth. Yes, just like the other native pointed out, there was a lumbering bulk of dark fur, a mere smudge on the opposite side of the lake, passing along the opposite edge of the lake. The Inuk stopped in his tracks, his amber eyes widening at the sight of the bear, one of the strongest of the animal spirits. Almost instinctively, Wynn started running the procedure of hunting bears through his mind, the carving of ribs, hiding them in meat, and waiting for the bear to lumber by, devour it, and walk to its death. However, as the reality of their fate gripped him, he realized that this was no hunt. This was survival.

"B-bear is st-strong," he muttered quietly, in agreement with Cane who was then standing near to him, "B-but bear is shy. If we don't smell of food. He won't come. Right, brother, he's scared of us like we are scared of him. It's safe." He almost completely forgot about his freezing limbs and trembling mumble, until Cane motioned them to the shallow water ahead.

The Inuk turned his eye to the water, the frozen ice. It was shallow here, Cane was right, probably the safest vantage point that they had come across so far. However, Wynn looked at the ice as if it was insulting him, belittling him, or as if it had betrayed him. The ice hadn't let him cross last time, by the will of the spirits or other, and Wynn wondered if it would bear him now. Fear rattled in his chest, the incident still too recent for him to forget the terrible cold, but deep inside him, there was something else. There was firm resolve and determination, hatred almost, that drove anger. Wynn set his trembling lips into a determined frown.

Damn it all, he was going to cross this ice, whether or not he slipped in again. He would prove it wrong, prove that he was strong now, at the height of his fear, his own form of a counterattack.

Wynn nodded to Cane and started slowly for the ice with faltering steps. He took a careful step and tested it. It seemed thick enough. Well, now that they didn't have the ropes secured around their waists, it was wet or dry, but either way, Wynn was determined to make it across.

Every fiber of Scyeth's being balked at the idea of trying the ice again; didn't they just experiment with the ice? And how had that gone for Wynn again? Oh, right. He almost plunged to his death. And what was that over there? A bear. A ******** bear. Because honestly, this day couldn't get any ******** better. The blond flinched away from Cane and he let blond bangs fall over his face.

"I should do it on my own."

Pride did horrible things to a boy's mind.

Speaking of which, Scyeth was fairly certain he didn't want Wynn to die. Either the little Inuk was fearless or stupid; Scyeth wasn't sure which he preferred, but honestly, there must be a better option. One that didn't involve bears, or drowning. "I don't think we should do this, period. Shouldn't we at least have a ******** plan this time? Because I hate to break it to you guys, but your last try? It didn't rock so solid."

Cane, for once, frowned at Scyeth and shook his head, slowly. "Okay. Better plan. I go first." Slow, calm steps brought him to the edge and he stopped Wynn with a careful hand. "Come back, brother. I do this differently."

Cane was a big guy. If he crossed, the others would be fine. The water wasn't going quickly, not like in the deep areas, and he could see the rocks underneath. It was going to be cold, but. Well.

One large foot stomped down, hard, with conviction, and he crushed a hole in the ice, sinking his heavily booted foot into the water. It wasn't deep at all, here. His youth had taught him to walk on wet rocks, and this, for him was familiar. The thick boots stopped him from feeling immediate cold or wetness. This was good.

Still, half of his attention was on the bear. It didn't seem to care about them, so far.

Wynn watched as Cane stepped past him, calmly holding him back with a gentle hand. For a moment, the little Inuk was almost offended but when he looked back at Scy, he realized why he was doing it. Scy was worried. Like Wynn, the demon, too, remembered the incident of breaking ice not too long ago as well, and for that, he was still nervous. Wynn couldn't blame him, he felt the same way, if not more determined.

Keeping to the icy shore, Wynn watched as Cane stepped forward and broke the ice with a single determined kick. His boot only sunk down a few inches, so that was good. If only it would stay like that all the way across the river, but Wynn knew better than that. no doubt there was going to be an area of the river where it sloped down, grew deeper, and then sloped back up. He just hoped there wasn't a pocket hidden beneath the ice. At any rate, Cane, as well as the rest of the group, might be able to just make it without letting the water slip in from the top of their boots...If they were lucky. When they reached the middle of the water bed, the group would more than likely get a little wet besides their boots.

"Scy? Your foot. Needs to be kept as safe as it can. Cross with Cane? Just here. So your foot doesn't hurt. Doesn't slip, and make worse," Wynn asked with chattering, frozen teeth. The boy's lips were becoming pale and purple almost, with all this cold, and his nose was rosy in hue.

One thing after another. Maybe some divine force was against them... First the storm, then mist, then that dratted river, now an ice lake with a bloody bear on it!! This time, Rufus wasn't having it, he wouldn't let the two reckless brothers put themselves, and the group in danger. Already Cane was crunching his way through the ice and the crack of his boot smashing the surface echoed across the frozen expanse like the crash of a gunshot. Before the pair could take another step further Rufus was standing, arms crossed, next to Scyeth. "Stop you two." He snapped, hands on hips, attempting to summon all the adult authority that he could muster. "I'm afraid I agree with Scyeth here." He put a hand to the blond's shoulder, both supporting the injured boy and using the movement to emphasise his alligence with what the teen had suggested. "We shouldn't do anything until we've got a plan. We've got to be sensible. This place has already proved dangerous, it crippled Syceth's ankle and Wynn nearly froze to death."

He paused for thought, breath rising in clouds. What were the options. Crossing the ice was a short cut and near eliminated the chance of the bear being very interested. ((Although if the beast did take an interest.. would it move faster on ice than them??)) Crossing around the edge stopped them from falling into the ice, plus it saved Cane from totally soaking his feet - he'd loose his toes to frostbite if he wasn't careful. But going by land meant they were more likely to pass near the bear..

"What do you say guys? Weigh up the risks at least. I can't let you go charging in gun-ho like last time."

"Quiet." Calm, smooth, but near dangerous was Cane's tone, blue eyes meeting Rufus's gaze, and he didn't seem particularly intimidated. "Do not snap at us. Speak calmly... My feet are very cold, no matter what we do now." It was true. He would prefer to continue across. "I can carry Wynn and Scyeth across." It wouldn't be too hard, not harder than carrying Scyeth for miles.

He folded his arms across his chest, voice still calm, somewhat resigned. "Let us make a choice quickly. I do not wish to say in our friend's," A nod toward the bear, "Territory longer than necessary." Especially if Rufus and Scyeth were going to raise their voices, or otherwise attract attention.

Setting his pale lips into a frown, Wynn struggled to speak. At first the words didn't come, frozen in the Inuk's throat, before he choked them out in a soft tone, "W-wet," the young chocolate hued boy stammered as he gestured to himself and Cane. Then he lifted his arm slowly to the setting sun in the west. It was getting darker. In fact, if Wynn held up his hand to the sky and measured, there was only about an hour or so left of daylight, before the land slipped into the cold grips of night. Around them, long shadows traced false paths along the snow covered ground and the sky in the east grew more and more purple.

"Night c-comes. Wet, C-cane and I, then you and Scy. We will f-f-f-f-freeze. Need shelter. Fire. Something. B-b-b-before night falls. Frost will b-bite if w-w-we d-don't find Tower soon. Stay away from b-bear. We m-m-must keep m-m-moving. Cross the ice, he-h-here." As Wynn spoke he wrapped his arms tightly around him, tucking his gloved and sock covered hands underneath his arms and close to his chest. The longer they stayed standing around here, the colder Wynn and the others were going to get. Without moving, Wynn wasn't creating enough warmth and he feared that the sweat he had underneath his layers of clothing, would freeze up if he didn't keep his body warm and his heart pumping. He gave another violent shiver, his breath fogging up in white cotton puffs of steam. His hair was stiff, unnaturally so, framing his face like dark chocolate wire. "M-m-must move."

Rufus saw the logic behind his attitude. Alright. That made Scyeth feel better, at the very least. Even if it made Cane grumpy and poor Wynn shiver. ( Poor Wynn. Scyeth was already freezing his a** off; he couldn't imagine falling in the water in this goddawful weather. ) "Okay. See, that wasn't so hard," the youth teased gently, stepping forward. "And now we're all on the same page." So maybe Cane was fearless and strong, but communication wasn't exactly his strong point. If he and Scy were going to keep working together like they did now, that was something they'd have to work on. Scyeth did not appreciate being left in the dark, even if he'd simply agree with the idea presented.

"I guess it's not that deep." Cane did just stand in it and the only issue was having cold feet. "You should take Wynn across." He nodded to the youngest member of their group, pushing his hair out of his blue eyes. It seemed, once listened to by another member of the party, the demon's charisma had returned and his terrible mood drained away with amazing alacrity. Glancing back to the other two, he nodded again. It was getting very cold.

"Yes, you're right. We should keep moving." Once Cane had Wynn across, Scyeth supposed he'd allow himself to be carried again. His ankle was screaming at him, he was already just standing on one like, much like a bird does. Giving it a little break couldn't hurt.

The snappish retort startled him and he took a step backwards. He hadn't meant to undermine the boy's judgement, he simply wanted to make it clear that this time they shouldn't be jumping into a situation that could land them in a trouble like last time they'd rushed into things. Trying to pacify the teenager he folded his arms, almost sullenly giving in to what the brothers were saying. "If you're sure this will be fine." The sooner that they reached the damned place the happier Rufus would be... This journey had sapped the motivation right out of him, he wasn't even sure that reaching their destination would be rewarding enough to reimburse the struggle they'd faced to get there..

The tint of the setting sun on the snow and Wynn's ominous words started to gnaw at the pits of his stomach, alongside the fact the two teens had shot down his plea to think about alternate solutions. Taking a deep breath he followed Cane onto the ice. However, fearing frostbite he did not follow in the hollows that Cane had made in the ice.

The leap of nerves in his gut unbalanced him and almost instantly his foot slid on the iced surface. Not even the spiked soles of his shoes had much effect.. "What's the best way to avoid falling flat on my face?" He queried, trying to make the tone of conversation light again before lurching forward; refusing to allow his early slip to deter him. Although, if he was having trouble, what would it be like for the injured Sceyth. "To save time I could carry you..? If they really were close to the tower, perhaps he could deal with the water in his shoes... The boots were apparently semi-water proof, according to the man in the shop where Rufus had purchased them..

"The easiest way to have sure footing is to step through the ice." Was Cane's low mutter, even as he nodded to Scyeth, acknowledging that the blonde was, in this situation correct. He was unused to having to communicate with words. Some said Cane was a natural leader, like Scyeth, but the truth was simply that Canaan was very confident in leading himself, and those like him. Wynn understood without needing verbal instructions, because he had been raised similarly.

Scyeth and Rufus had not been. This was a good lesson for the native. "Thank you, Scyeth. I had forgotten the benefits of explaining things." He offered his wide back to Wynn, and once the Inuk had climbed on, began a slow, careful walk through the water. The ice toward the middle wasn't thick at all, so it turned out that they wouldn't have wanted to walk on top of it. It broke easily against Canaan's legs and he gritted his teeth as the cold began to seep through his pants. He, luckily, had a change of them in his pack.

The water stopped at his mid-thigh, luckily, and began to get shallow once more on the other side. Soon, Wynn was deposited on the opposite shore, and Cane shot him a reassuring, if shaky [due to the cold] smile, before heading back with more speed.

Returning, he raised his brows, nonverbally asking for the verdict. He would willingly carry Scy, but even if Rufus insisted, someone needed to carry Rufus' large pack. "Well, friends? The sun sets and the water gets colder."
