Because, in order to start thread, you have to actually know what you are talking about.

Oh Gawd, Mouldy! Not you! Youre one of those? rolleyes
Okie dokie, for the last time:
these are bands that I find have a certain sound or quality to them that is Gothic in nature to me.
Well, except for the bands that others submitted... sweatdrop
Anyway I don't really care if Andy and Davey don't wanna be Gothic, or if "Gothic" was a time period, because i need to describe these bands somehow. And if Gothic be the word that comes to mind , then so be it.
If you don't agree, then i'm sorry.
Just tell me the bands you do think of as Gothic so we can have a nice healthy convo in here. 3nodding

Just wondering but why did you include Nitewish, HIM, AFI, and Perfect Circle in the list of Goth Rock bands?

(not flaming, just wondering.)

Nightwish - Gothic/Symphonic Metal
A Perfect Circle - Alternative Rock
AFI - Post hardcore/punk
HIM - Alternative Rock

Nightwish was about the closest you came.

Goth Rock bands can be identified quite easily with the heavy guitar and often screaming/grunting of the male vocals or harmonious and opera-like sounds for female vocals. Personally I like the female vocalists better 3nodding As far as lyrics and style go, the earlier stuff is kind of based around nihilism, the later stuff is based more on a dark and sometimes a sadistic perspective of romance.

If you want gothic rock, check out:
Theatre of Tragedy
The Cure (their earlier stuff like their "Faith" and "Disintegration" album)
The March Violets
Cradle of Filth (Although in my opinion 90% of the stuff this band produces is crap)

Becuase they sort of evoke a feeling of dark Gothicness, to me, if not to others.
Nightwish i'd call Goth Metal, HIM Goth Rock as well as APC and AFI are Goth Punk whether Davey Havok like sit or not xd
Whats your fave Goth band?

Oh jeez thats whats sucks about modern music its rare you get that classic goth sound, which i hear in bands like HIM and The 69 Eyes 3nodding

It's a tie for me between Cinema Strange and Clan of Xymox.

For most male vocalists, it usually is about screaming and grunting (not saying its a bad thing, some people like that stuff). As for HIM, yes I've hear a lot of their songs ("Circle of Fear" was great")... although they sure as hell aren't gothic to me.
Even Ville hasn't called themselves gothic rock, they've ever only called themselves "Love Metal". And you may argue, "oh but they dress like goths!", but so did Ashlee Simpson at one point in her dismal career. Good band, but you really can't decide that they are gothic when they themselves call themselves another genre.

yeah but most bands don't want to be "labeled" but never the less you want to describe them somehow!
And Cold have called themselves "Redneck Goth" and as far as i'm concerned No One was theyre only Goth song, so you can't really go by that either.
What it all boils down to is everyone's personal oppinion. Except for certain staples in every genre, theres gonna be arguments about whether a band fits or not.
And i don't consider Ashlee Simson, in anyway, dressing goth(most likely she thought she was being Rock or Punk which has been dragged thru the mud irrepairably), however i do hate Amy Lee for tweenifying it, it had been nice and safe and untouched!
Damn you , you fat cow! gonk
Anyway i really really wanna get away from this cos this isn't a debate thread!
Please lets just discuss the bands that we think of as Goth, and if a discussion is going on about a band you don't consider goth then just don't participate...
Of course the only discussions this thread ever sees is the debates gonk
Thats the problems with certain kinds of music everyone involved in certain circles are so damn pretentious you just end up arguing over everything.. i really thought the Official Punk thread in the forums was gonna be like that, i was pleasantly surprised to find out they were a bunch of weirdos mrgreen

The guild's punk thread or the music forum's punk thread? The one in the music forum is more so just a bunch of bored people, plus a few guys there are actually in punk bands. Anyone who goes in there with a "Go Simple Plan/Good Charlotte" etc etc has been scared away. Evanesence... hmmm... what should I say about Amy Lee... her melodies actually aren't bad and compared with modern day standards her lyrics are creative... otherwise I think she is way out of her depth, her live voice sucks (lacks the live concert energy I think) and her lyrics (if you read them carefully enough) have very little gothic themes and aren't that creative at all. Wikey Wah! But hey, don't take me all that serious, my only link to the gothic sub-culture was my ex who introduced a bunch of stuff to me (The March Violets in particular).
