It's common sense.
If I really wanted to think about it I could come up with this theory:
If, say, the parents had the genes of BB and Bb or Bb and Bb then the children could come out with either BB or Bb.
BB would be black and Bb would be brown. Usually.
There's also the phenomenon where the Bb gene starts out black and fades to brown.
