Yeah indeed, one day.
I'm doing the Youth Leadership at Sea Scheme as well. If I pass that I should be able to return voluntarily as a watchleader or boatswain's/bosun's mate.
I had a dream about Victory the other night. Darnit.....I want to be there right now. I'm getting withdrawal symptoms with not being able to be around that ship.

I have one a bit like that, but it's a bit smaller. It's not top quality and only cost me £10, but it sits just under the renaissance-looking mirror in my room. The guns are only painted on though.
Her thread is being neglected as usual...AND I invited people who are interested in ships dammit.

It's frustrating when the conversation lags, I know.
Can we discuss knots here as well, being as they are part of ships, as long as we stay within the proper bounds of the topic? I'm very interested in how rigging is done and maneuvered.

Yeah of course! Anything about tall ships to be honest.
I know a fair bit already, but right now I'm still nowhere near an expert, heh.

I guess a good start would be did you learn any knots or rigging tips while on your journey? And was there a knot that seemed more useful in everyday application?
Anything you remember about handling rigging would be fun to discuss too!

This group is in support of tall ships and encouraging them back to East Anglia more often. It's mainly in aid of the Tall Ships Youth Trust and the Jubilee Sailing Trust.

Say Mel, has anyone asked about the role of the lookout on tall ships? Cuz I can only wonder how tough it could be for someone who's afraid of heights. rolleyes
So Wow Mel, yer up for a position like that? Did you get it by now?

Lookouts are generally port and starboard, and located either side of the helm. They don't generally need to send people aloft for lookouts these days (which is a shame). They have someone looking out either side of the helm as well as the radar. *Sigh.*
Sure, I'm up for that position. I'm looking forward to it. Just waiting for the information to come through.

I see... But that's these days, right? I remember that on the movie Titanic, there was this guy serving as the lookout and he seemed to be in a really tall place. I wonder how much things have changed throughout time...

The Titanic was a huge cruise ship. If he stood aft at either port or starboard, he'd see either side, but there's a flipping enormous structure sittin on top of the hull in which are accommodations, a ballroom and various other attractions.
I'm annoyed with my facebook group already. I had 17 members, now down to 15, and it's already following the Medieval-Renaissance Fantasy Guild route. What is it about me? Am I that crap at getting people's attention? One of these days I think I might spontaneously combust.

Right, but since I have no idea how tall it was compared to one of those tall ships you posted a picture of, I had to ask. And you know what's funny? As a kid, I never even had a tall ship toy. I remember having one or two boats but that's about it. I guess I never took that big an interest on the subject. rolleyes
Don't say that Mel! I'm sure it's not you. I thought that happened to me too cuz all the guilds I'm in are slow. And that's not all! A pal of mine (you must have seen her at the CV guild) called chippbogard says that every guild she joins goes dead. Go figure, eh? Maybe it's like that song on Shrek: "People just ain't no good", ha-ha!
