"Lets hope he hasn't died then"

He spoke casually. While it would make his life easier to not have someone enforce rules of a game, at the same time, it would defeat his purpose of beating this game, which in turn, would make the entire last month of research pointless.

"Only one way to find out, right?"

He smiled at the Hydra, hoping it would catch on to his thoughts of 'the faster we get to the castle, the faster we'll find out who died'.

The hydra gave a raspy sort of sigh. It wasn't getting any less hungry with these people, but it couldn't attack Joe without the water creature stepping in.

"Ryu's still hungry..." it grumbled.

"Is that your name?" Proteus asked, "'Ryu'?"

"What do you care?" snapped the hydra.

"Easy now Ryu, it was just a question," Proteus replied his eyes knowing, "it's not proper for a dainty dragoness to have such a temperment."

Ryu hissed, but was marginally pleased that Proteus knew she was female. Most creatures she had met treated her as an 'it'.

"working on it"

He assured the hydra, before being a bit suprised at the interaction between Proteus and Ryu. For some reason, he saw the hydra as a beast rather than an intelligent creature, and while he would have guessed at it being female, he would never have bothered refering to it as her, as he was inclined to refer to Ryu as 'Hydra'.

"Any idea how far away from the castle we are?"

He asked after a bit, suddenly sounding a lot less optimistic than he had before, possibly due to the sudden awareness that he hadn't had any sleep in way too long. 13 hours to cross the labyrinth was all very well, the fact that it was done on foot by someone who hadn't had any sleep for the previous 24 hours, meant, that even with coffee, the original 6 hours he had given himself to get food for Ryu were an optimistic goal, one which he had set in the hopes of getting to the castle before falling asleep on the way.

*edit: I have no idea why he sounded more optimistic when he was supposed to sound less optimistic..

Ryu scoffed, "the bog land startsss over this hill. The city should be after the bog."

Proteus said nothing, it had been a while since he had found himself near the bog.

"Stay clear of the muck," he advised Joe, "strange things happen in this place and not all of them are created by the Goblin King. This swamp is older than the Labyrinth itself."

Ryu hissed voicing what she thought of the entire race of Fae, men, and elementals.

A weary smile appeared on his face as he thanked the hydra for the good news.

"Thanks"

He looked at the hill, calculating that they would reach it soon, before hearing the last of what Proteus was telling them.

"I guess the goblin king had to find somewhere to create his labyrinth"

He concluded, guessing that the swamp would have been something Jareth had taken as a positive when he created the labyrinth.

...very grubby and in the Fiery Forest. She got to her knees, and then her feet. Emalthya put a finger up to Hitomi, to check on her. Hitomi bit it gently. Emalthay dusted off her dress, scowling as bits of grime stuck to the velvet. "Maybe I ought to have worn slacks..."
She looked around. All she could see were trees and rocks and no paths. She smiled wanly. "Would you go left or right?"
Hitomi was silent.
"Fine, straight ahead, it is." Emalthya strode ahead in a direct line while the trap door shut ominously behind her.

After about twenty five minutes, Emalthya was starting to worry, as she was a worrying sort of person; she wasn't sure if she was getting anywhere, and she and Hitomi were alone in a forest and there was no-one hereabouts- she hadn't even heard a bird tweet!

Hitomi chattered and clacked her beak nervously. It was a few more seconds untill Emalthya heard what had upset her. It was a tiny snuffling sound. Emalthya looked around for the source, and found a rolled-up ball of bright red and orange fuzz. It was shaking slightly.

Emalthya cocked her head, a bird-like gesture she had inherited from a bird she had kept previously. "Uhm, hello?" she asked the ball, to see if it was intellegent.

The ball... unballed and looked at her with deep-red eyes that glittered with tears. It opened its long snout and squeaked.

Hitomi sheiked. Emalthya put a hand up to quieten her. "I'm sorry if I startled you, are you okay?"

The red thing wimpered.

Emalthay pursed her lips. "What are you called?" she asked pleasantly.

THe red thing's nose twitched. "Stupid."

Emalthay blinked. "Excuse me?" she asked in affront.

"They call me Stupid, and boring, and lazy." Said Stupid.

Emathya felt her heart melt. "Well, I am... I am Emalthya. Which of your names do you like so I might call you that?"

Stupid sniffled. "I don't like any of my names."

Emaltya sucked in her lip. "Well, Baka is Japanese for Stupid, do you like that name?"

Stupid itched the end of his long nose. "I like it. Hey, wait, aren't you a challenger?"

Emalthya nodded.

"So why are you waiting here for? You need to get to the castle!" Baka stood up and dusted his backside off.

"But aren't the denizens of teh Labyrinth supposed to stop me?" asked Emalthya curiously.

Baka shrugged, "Only if you're mean. Let's go! This way!"

Baka lead Emalthya through the fiery forest, chatting all the way about the fieries who were mean to him, while Emalthya made sympathetic noises. It occured to her that Baka could be leading her into a trap, opr simply round in circles, but she resolved that at least she was doing something constructive.

All at once, Baka bounced ahead, shouting excitedly; "The edge of the forest! Do you see it, Nana" (as this was teh name she allowed him to call her)"?"

Emalthya burst from the trees into watery sunlight. "I do! Oh, thankyou so much for taking me this far!"

Baka nodded. "But I don't really know the direct way to teh castle from here, so it'll be a bit tricky for us."

Emalthya started. "You intend to come along?"

"Yeah! You're the only one who's any nice to me! That is. If you'll let me come, I'd like it."

Emalthya hugged him in response.
