It was a requisition for wealth since the Middle east at the time was one of the richest places on the Globe. Religion was just used to rally people to arms cause the Crusades was being directed by a Coalition of bankrupt kings. Initially though it was started by King Henry. Besides conveniently the Papacy was corrupt and after the Crusades was no longer profitable, The Templar got the better end of the stick. So King Phillip, whom after the crusades was also bankrupt, burned all the knights at the stake after admitting to heresy and the once all powerful entity in the Middle East known as the Templarist, was annihilated. Having their wealth robbed by Phillip to restore his kingdom and the Papacy.
