It was starting to make sense now, Garrat decided, though he could hardly imagine why Manuerva chose him, a knight, rather than a servant. Perhaps there was a factor in Rosa's infatuation with him, perhaps there was also a factor in the fact that he had been sold to the royal family, but he was starting to get the picture.
Before he stepped out, Garrat paused when he thought he heard Nathaniel's voice. When he heard it no more, he continued his path, but his heart was cold with dread. It became heavier as soon as he saw an all-too familiar naked kitten.
He quickly picked up the creature (Bastet was her name?), and searched for her owner. The knight cursed under his breath, muttering about how stubborn and maybe even stupid Nathaniel was for trying to come here.
Garrat could only continue to the altar, but he kept the kitten in his arms. He tried not to scowl at the cheerful commoners, tried not to glare at Rosa. He felt that it was best to keep up appearances, if only for his prince's sake. Again, he had to remind himself that he was only going through this for Nathaniel.
Oh, how his heart shattered when he glanced around one last time and saw his dear prince caught in thorns and witnessing the wedding!

Nathan's tears dripped down his face as he watched Garrat stand beside that woman. Although the pain in his chest tightened and wouldn't subside, he could at least figure out that the knight's actions were probably to protect the prince! Though they were full of tears, Nathaniel could only see red at Rosa! She was the enemy here, not Garrat.
The priest began his speech and Nathan couldn't help but struggle! If he could call out during the vows, he might be able to save his friend! If he could get loose from these godforsaken thorns, he might have a chance! It would be perfect if he could escape when the stupid priest says "speak now or forever hold your peace"! But no matter how hard he would twist and desist, he couldn't break free. These thorns weren't like vines or thin branches but more like trunks of a tree! If only he were stronger.... The kitten hopped down from Garrat's arms and curled up atop a nearby bench and slept, as if everything was normal... what a lucky kitten it was.
The thick wooden tendril tightened around Nathaniel's mouth and made his scream in agony from his breaking heart be nothing more than a drowned out muffle. The first parts of the prince's body to bleed were his wrists and arms. The thorns cut deep and tore into his pale flesh as he struggled more, only turning them red. Though he ignored the pain, he began to see that he was too weak to break out of these harsh binds. He pulled forward once to get one last glimpse of his knight and then he was yanked away by the thorns.
Manureva kept close to the bride and groom, making sure he was well aware that if he tried to do anything funny, she'd snap Nathan's neck in half.

The speech was agonizingly slow and Garrat wanted nothing more than to grab an ax and try to get Nathaniel out of the thorns, but he knew who was controlling them. Still, how could he be sure Manuerva wouldn't kill the prince even after the knight, or king-to-be, in this case, fulfilled his part of the deal?
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Reynard, watching, observing, as if waiting for some order to strike. Garrat couldn't say a thing, but he knew the bird had a mind of his own. When the starling's attention turned toward Manuerva, Garrat began to wonder if witches needed concentration to keep their magic working. If it was the case, and Manuerva was keeping watch over the knight, perhaps Reynard could strike and distract her so Nathaniel can get out of the thorns.
He glanced at the bird again and they made eye contact for a moment. Just one moment, surely unnoticeable. The starling flew at a distance first, moving out of the princess' line of sight, before diving in for a hit.

The princess was only focusing on her brother when the fluttering bird zipped into her and broke her concentration! She hissed at the creature and would have made an attempt to kill the ugly little pheasant when her attention came to Nathaniel dashing out of the thorn bush away from the crowd. His arms were red with blood when he ran into the castle. He needed to reach Garrat!
The vows were getting close to an end but Manureva wasn't leaving Garrat, no matter how angry she was. " you need to finish your vows!" She growled from behind a him. The crowd cheered, though, Happy to hear the Rosa near the end of her vows. But in the castle, Nathaniel's small voice could be heard down the hall! "Garrat!" He shouted.

Garrat looked back, just waiting for Nathaniel to show up. He would stall and fumbled over his vows, make himself less desirable as a king, until Nathaniel shows up to object. How would these people feel about nearly having a king who loved another man?
Reynard dove again and again at the princess, clawing at her with his talons. He would help his master disrupt everything. Perhaps the princess doesn't suspect that the bird was not acting alone.
When it was Garrat's turn, it wasn't hard for him to fumble. He had never practiced the wedding vows, after all. He would forget the words and stumble. Below, he heard the crowd get irritated. How can their soon-to-be king not know simple vows? perhaps they thought.

Manureva was nearing the end of her patience with the annoying little bird continuing to pester her. She growled and the second she saw Nathaniel, she swatted the starling away and pulled out a pistol. Magic was fine to use, but it was exhausting! So a man made weapon could work just as good, she figured.
At first, the pistol was pointed at the prince himself, who didn't falter until his sister moved the gun to the back of Garrat's head just out of the civilian's view.
"I've had enough! No more pesky games! This kingdom deserves a proper king and queen! And when they create a real prince, then Garrat can be free!" She explained oddly to te raven haired boy.
"What!? How dare you-!" Nathan called but froze Manureva readied the gun. "Please... Don't hurt Garrat, it's me you want, I'm the prince 'Reva" he begged to which the blonde looked so perplexed all of a sudden. She shook her head and frowned.
"Garrat doesn't belong to you now... " she purred and then pointed the gun back on the prince!
"Please! Put the gun down... Lets be rational- .. Just tell me what you want... " he pleaded. Manureva frowned and pointed the gun back to Garrat, "Knight! If you don't say 'I do' in the next second, ill blast a hole right through your precious prince's head..." She hissed.
Nathan wanted none of this and was ready to stand between Garrat and the gun in case she decided to fire. But instead, he noticed his little kitten move.... And it started to grow wings?

Garrat glared back at her while the priest began to ask him the crucial question, apparently trying to get the wedding over with.
"I..." Should he risk a last attempt to stall? "Princess," he began, trying not to hiss the title, "if you'd allow me a final kiss with Nathaniel, then I'll say the words." It seemed that Rosa becoming his wife was, at this point, inevitable. "Once I marry, I can never so much as touch him again. Surely you can spare just a few more seconds for something that I want to make last. If you kill him, however, I will fall silent and you will have to find someone else!"
He quickly pulled Nathaniel into his arms, not caring that Rosa could see, and turned so that his back was facing the gun. He made sure the prince couldn't make their positions switch. If the princess decided to shoot, she would hit the knight first. At the same time, Garrat made sure the crowd below can see, and he could hear their confusion upon seeing their king-to-be with the sickly prince rather than the bride. "Nathaniel, you idiot, you weren't supposed to return," the knight scolded lovingly. He pressed their lips together before the prince could answer.

Garrat stepped in front of the prince, and Nathan begged for him to move or step aside, but his overwhelming strength and his sweet lips made it hard to deny his wishes. In order to breathe, Nathan pulled away as hard as he could in order look Garrat in the eyes. The man has just soiled his reputation in front of the kingdom and before the kingdom could even react, Nathan frowned and spoke an odd word that seemed to make the entire audience pause... including Rosa.
Her heart froze as Manureva gasped at the sight and glared daggers at the boy. Nathan looked at his knight with a pleasant grin only to have it interrupted by a thin stream of blood dripping form his nose. "Garrat... there is something I have to tell you.." he gave a small weak smile as he attempted to cover his bloody nose with his sleeve. Manureva growled, "He's a warlock! " she hissed, " And- .... s**t! You've literally managed to ruin everything!" she leaned up against the wall. "All this time, I though it was that wench of a mother of mine... " she spat. But looking at her smaller brother, she couldn't help but smirk. Nathan was shaking now, clearly weakened by whatever spell he used. But he starred straight forward, glaring right back at his sister. She pouted and crossed her arms. "Garrat, let me protect you here, you don't have to do it all the time.." he muttered.
