Lilly went in to the herbology class and took a seat. She looked around the room and found she didn't know anyone and sighed. She was feeling a bit lonely that she would never meet anyone. "Screw this." She she whispered to herself and marched up to the two near her." Hello, I'm Lilly. How are you both?" She asked.

Arianna came into the herbology class and looked for the teacher, ready to spurt the same story she'd had to tell almost every other teacher since she reached the school.

Prof. Black watched Arianna walk in. She smiled. "Hello. We haven't started class yet. Please have a seat."

Lilly went and took her seat and got ready for class. She smiled ready to learn what ever the Professor had to teach.

"Hello class. I am Prof. Black. I am your herbology teacher. This year I will be focusing on flowering plants." Prof. Black got up from her desk and walked to the front of the class.

Arianna slipped in to her seat, glad she wasn't late and even more glad the teacher hadn't asked her about missing the first few days of class.

"The flowering plants, also called angiosperms, are a major group of land plants. They comprise one of the two groups in the seed plants, distinct in covering their seeds by enclosing them in a true fruit. They bear the reproductive organs in a structure called a flower; the ovule is enclosed within a carpel, which will lead to a fruit." Prof. Black began class.

Lilly took out her notebook and quill and started writing what the professor was saying. After a minute she decided to enchant her quill to write what the proffesor and sat back in her chair and smiled.

Prof. Black looked at Lilly, "That doesn't help you remember it." Then she continued her lecture, "The first evidence of angiosperms appears in the fossil record approximately 140 million years ago, during the Jurassic period which is approximately 202 to 135 million years ago. Fossil plants with some identifiable angiosperm characteristics appear in the Jurassic and early Cretaceous, but in relatively few and primitive forms. The great angiosperm radiation, when a great diversity of angiosperms appear in the fossil record, occurred in the mid-Cretaceous. By the late Cretaceous, angiosperms appear to have become the predominant group of land plants, and many fossil plants recognizable as belonging to modern families appeared."

Orchidaceae (orchid family)
Asteraceae or Compositae (daisy family)
Fabaceae or Leguminosae (pea family)
Poaceae or Gramineae (grass family)
Rubiaceae (madder family)
Euphorbiaceae (spurge family)
Malvaceae (mallow family)
Cyperaceae (sedge family)
Araceae (aroid family)
"In the list the Orchidaceae, Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Araceae are monocot families; the others are dicot families." Prof Black said. With that the bell rang. "Make sure you have this list. No homework."
