He leans on the bit, he's usually quite light in my hands and all I feel is the weight of the rein but sometimes I can feel him lean on me to carry him instead of him carrying himself. I have to get on his butt about it, take a bit with the rein, push with my leg and maybe a tap with the crop to wake him up lol.

He has a very bad habit of taking the left rein and running off with me. He can't do it as much in the roundpen, and working him on that rein a lot will hopefully discourage him to do it and help get it out of his mind.

Three Bars was a Chestnut TB, totally gorgeous.

I go out in an hour so I'll ave a Riley update to bring back lol.

I see and carry him instead of him carrying himself along with leaning on the bit while feeling the weight of the rein? I see and the crop...

Anyway bad habits you say? there's always that chance and that sucks! At least he can't do as much in the rounden. And I hope so too.

Anyway awwwww Three Bars sounds and looks so gorgeous, what year was he born? anyway yay update on Riley!!!!!! LOL.

lol wow I havn't been on in a while... sorry! I'm being home schooled and with being at the barn 2 hours 4 times a week plus school, I'm exhausted!

Well, I have a few updates.

Riley and I have been riding without the running martingale for a little while now and we get better and better each time. He's real relaxed and moved out wounderfully in both directions.

I havn't asked for the canter yet, but hopefully soon. With working him 4 times a week Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (1 hour rides or just lunging) Riley is putting on much more muscle, he's at a healthy weight and we're making great progress.

He neck reins beautifully at the walk, jog and working trot. We have yet to neck rein at the canter but thats later down the road.

The black flies have been bothering the horses bad, Riley, Eagle and Dakota are being eatten alive! I've been spraying Riley with a fly spray, but since its water based and its so hot out, they sweat it off in no time. Plus I've discovered Riley doesn't like things spraying him lol so ... I take him outside and spray him and sometimes he tries to trot circles around me but he's getting better - I took a spray bottle with water and started getting him use to it with that.

Riley also turned 7 on May 14th!!! so I spent the evening with him, gave him and all the other horses an apple and they loved it. Riley's much more respectful of my space, doesn't try to snach the lead away to eat grass. He's becomging a very well mannered boy.

The barn owner's had some lead ropes and rope reins made up for them by a friend, they gave me a new lead rope of my choice (Black) and I forget how long it is... but its LONG! lol. I also got to test out the new rope reins on Riley, and their going to try to contact the guy to see about getting me a pair, and if they can't - I get their old set. Which I'm still excited about because I used those reins when I rode Eagle and I LOVED them!

I've got a bad sun burn from being outside so much at the barn lol but hey, its worth it right?

Umm I'll have to look back and see when Three Bars was born.

Monday, May 21 2007 - Update!

Hehe so I've been getting on a little more.

I went out to the barn with my boyfriend since we were planning to spend the day together and he lives like 5 minutes from where I keep Riley. We walked out together and I let him catch Riley and lead him in. We then both groomed Riley and made him look all pretty.

I showed him how to saddle up (Western) since my trainer had asked me, to saddle Riley up so he could ride him after he worked up the dirt in the outdoor arena. I thought it would be very good for Riley, which in the end would benefit me.

I lunged Riley in each direction at all gaits, then called my bofriend, Aaron over to take the lead. I showed him how to lunge Riley, we started at a walk and then went to a jog. Riley knew he wasn't as experienced as me so he wouldn't jog for very long but hey, its a start! lol

I got on for 5 minutes (Since it was my coaches saddle, my feet couldn't touch the stirrups! lol thats how much taller he is than I am and I'm 5'8") so I walked Riley around before taking him outside for my coach.

This is what he's said "It's been 25 years since someone has tacked up a horse for me."

So Riley got some professional training. I go out tomorrow to work him, and I think if the stallion isn't in the outdoor arena I'll ride out there.

I'll get the info on Three Bars.

Riley tests me less now, his manners have improved. The flies are bad, I was recomended a fly spray from the tack shop, its a new product for horses and cattle. We'll see how it works lol.

I've been getting lots of videos and pictures when out at the barn. I plan to put them all together into one biiiiiig video. Roughly around 8-10 minutes long of our progress beginning in early April until now.

It'll take me a few days to put together since I need some more videos/pictures

When Riley was ridden by my coach, me and m boyfriend brushed him and tacked up. We both took turns lunging Riley and handed him over to my coach. We stood at the fence and watched while Riley was worked by one of the best horseman I have ever met. He took me to a whole new level of riding and horseman ship. He is the coach who is providing me with knowledge to be the best horsewoman possible.

My coach isn't famous, but the horses he's trained are amazing! and its a great honor to be a boarder in that barn and have him and his wife help me with Riley. They were quite generous in selling him to me, Riley is worth a lot more then $2500 which I bought him for, and he's still very green. I think he's worth maybe $3500 if not more, because of his breeding.

Well I've finally got an update! lol

Riley and I have started riding in the large outdoor arena. First time we had lots of troubles, he took me all over etc. etc. and the second time, I was more in control. I didn't ride with a running martingale and we pulled through to have a wounderful ride.

I plan to keep doing whatever it is I have been, and soon we may be on the trails if things keep going extremly well. With the heat, by the end of the ride RIley was covered in sweat from his ears to his back... so I took him out and hosed off his legs, neck, shoulder and bum and brushed the sweat out of his back while he grazed and dried off.

I'm still working on that video a little at a time because I have assignments and exams to study for.

Ohhhh and I have a mini update about this lil guy!
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/49623627/

Dakota, he's 6 years old and was started undersaddle a couple weeks ago. He's accepting a saddle with no issue, and will carry a rider at the walk. He doesn't use a bit and he's still unsure but he has come a LOOONG way since he first arrived with my coaches.

Riley took control a couple times, not good I know lol but its being fixed, and with no running martingale, which makes me proud. Hopefully I can go on the trails in another couple months.

Dakota lets you saddle him and do up the cinch loosely. All the horses at the barn don't like the cinch being tightened all at once in the cross-ties. So, we always walk them, circle, back up etc. slowly tighten the cinch a bit more each time. They also ask Dakota and the other horses (Riley too) to cross their back and front legs over (Turn on the haunches & on the forehand) before getting on.

Its sort of a thing with them, if you can't get them to, don't get on them. Thats why it took Dakota so long to be started undersaddle, he didn't know how to turn on the forehand.

Dakota's been started under saddle in the round pen at walk and trot and he's wounderful. I don't think he's ever been measured but I believe he's bigger than Riley but about Eagle's size, so I'm going to guess maybe 15.1hh maybe a tad taller.

Dakota's been with my coach for about a year now, and when he arrived he was totally wild and afraid of people because he didn't have a great past.

Riley and Dakota are the trouble makers of the pasture! lol Someone will go to bring them in, and Eagle comes no problem, Riley and Dakota just stand there waiting for you to walk out. Once you do.... ooooh they take off up to the gate! lol such trouble makers... its not so bad now since they've been changed over to a pasture thats a tad smaller then the one they were in.

Thats good and I see, by the way 15.1Hands? he's not that small and I see, poor Dakota but at least he's in better hands now, trouble makers you say? haha how funny! rofl

lol oh their totally rotten!

Update!

Well, I havn't been able to post all my updates as I've been so busy I just don't have much time. Riley and I have slowly been working on the exercise stargazer suggested and Riley is wounderful. I've been going bare back.

My plan is, when I get my wounderful Billy Cook saddle paid off, I'm going to buy either an AP saddle or a dressage saddle. As long as I don't have constant contact on his mouth, both of us with go far and I know it...

One problem... I need to get back into an english saddle more! Yeah I'm still riding english but... I've developed so many bad habbits since I started Western... lol. Last weekend I fought my demons and rode Custer again...

If you don't know, Custer threw me and I chipped and fractured a bone in my arm... OUCH! well I was off riding for a bit and I finally got back on him. This was the same weekend Riley and I had a wounderful ride. Well I had to ride Cuser in an english saddle becuase his western pads were off being cleaned. So I thought "OKay no problem, I rode english for 5 years anyway" booooy was I a mess!!!!!! I mean my toes were out, my legs were all over the place and oh it was awful! I mean I've been riding western n bareback but am I really that bad? lol It was a year and a half since I'd been in an english saddle.

Well, Custer owner who was there... "Bring him over here" ... so I did... "Take your feet out of those stirrups" I think I lost all the colour in my face lol. The last time I heard those words I was trotting, cantering and jumping without them. And she made me walk and trot around that pasture. Yeah at first I was bouncing around on Custer's back but she told me "Point your toes in, let the weight sink into your heels ..." etc. etc. after 5 minutes my whole seat and leg had improved. I was posting and sitting no problem.

Poor old Custer don't canter anymore, he has bad arthritis (Sp?) setting in, in his front leg and back legs, plus his COPD just doesn't allow hard work outs anymore.

Boy did everything improve! my confidence was boosted WAY up. He kept coming down and I didn't have a crop and of course he doesn't respond to clucks. "Custer, trot!" I was firm and wasn't afraid of the fact he may get pissed at having to work and try to throw me. I've stayed on him bareback when he went into a bucking fit... Yee Haw! lol

Well I got to Riley, and I kept remembering about "Toes in" "Sink the weight into your heels" and everything Custer's owner told me, and so I was able to get my leg in to push him through his stunts. Soon we were going around on a long relaxed rein.

I seriously need more english lessons! lol
