A man opened the door, his messy beard had woodchips in it as he looked down at the teen. “Well, what do ya want?” He barked. “Could I come in until it stops raining?” “Ya got money?” “No.” “What ya thinking then? Ya can’t just stay wherever you want for free,” he barked, slamming the door in her face. Turning around, she walked farther into town, the rain continued to pelt the ground. Reaching the next house, she knocked once more, a woman came to the door but quickly shut it before the teen could speak. Leaving she headed to the next house, a muddy farm horse came trotting down the street, his coat was drenched and bridal and saddle were strapped on his back as a lead rope dragged on the ground behind him. The teen grabbed the rope, “calm down,” she spoke, her voice calm as she stroked his forehead. She stood there, waiting for the owner to come after his horse, but he never came, “how far away did you loose your rider?” She asked, knowing the horse wouldn’t answer. Turning she walked down the street, her cloak dragging on the muddy ground beneath her, “don’t worry, we’ll return you.” The horse neighed, as if he were protesting. “I know how it feels to want freedom,” the teen answered back, walking up to a little house and knocking on the door. An old woman opened the door a crack, “oh my goodness, come in at once,” she ordered, motioning the teen in as she fully opened the door. “but…” “Don’t worry about the horse,” she turned, “come take this horse to the barn,” she shouted before grabbing the teen’s hand and pulling her into the door. A tall, young man appeared in front of the door, “not another,” he sighed, grabbing the rope from my hand and leading and began to walk towards the barn, but the horse bulked, neighing in protest as it fought against the man. “Pesky horse, follow me,” he spoke, the rain soaking him as he pulled against the rope, but the horse stood firm. “Let me try,” the teen said, pulling away from the woman and walking out into the rain once more. “I think your horse is spooked from the lightning,” he answered, as a bolt flashed through the sky, “don’t worry, let a man take care of it.” She glared at the man, “don’t order me about.” With that, she turned and walked towards the barn, the pounding of a horse’s footsteps followed her as she walked.

The man raced ahead of her and opened the door for the two. A cross look was set on his face. She walked through the door silently, the horse followed behind her as water dripped off of them both. “I’ll probably be back, my grandma will be sending me out here with dry clothes, food, and water for you two.” The teen nodded as she slid her hood off. The man shut the barn door tightly. “So, you obviously like me,” she spoke to the horse as he walked towards her in the dark, his nose touched her outstretched hand. “Well, not like you’d care, but I’m Rakio, and if I were you, I wouldn’t go telling that name to anybody.” The horse swished his tail behind him as if he understood her. “Can you speak?” Rakio asked, “I probably sound pretty dumb asking horse this, since you have no power within you. The horse stomped his hoof on the ground and whinnied. “I’m sorry, I don’t speak horse,” Rakio answered, a smile spreading across her lips as she leaned her hand on the horse’s side, which was covered in mud. “Beautiful stallion you have there,” a familiar voice broke through the silence. Rakio turned instantly to see the man quickly closing the door behind him, he held a large bundle underneath one arm and a lantern in his hand. “Pricey horse for only a teenager of no ranking to own,” he continued, walking over to a hay bale and setting the bundle down. “Who are you to speak of ranking,” Rakio asked boldly, “you aren’t a man of great worth yourself.” “Bold words to come from a…” he paused, lighting the other four lantern in the barn. Rakio’s eyes narrowed but she kept silent. “So, how did you come to this part of town?” The young man asked, his black, curly haired head turning around, spraying water as he did so. “That is for me and me alone to know,” she answered, clenching her jaw as she placed her hand over her wound inside her cloak. “You okay?” The man asked, walking carefully over to her. “I’m fine, leave me alone, I don’t need your help,” she answered tartly, her knee’s folded underneath her as she caught herself with her free hand at the last second. “Sure you are,” he answer, touching her hand, but the stubborn girl quickly pulled it away. “You need help, now let me help you.” He said, pulling the soaked cloak off of Rakio’s back. Rakio leaned back against a bale of hay, slowly pulling her hand away from her side, fresh blood shown on it as she quickly buried it into the straw on the floor.

“How long have you had this?” The young man asked, examining her side as he kneeled beside her. “About a week now,” Rakio answered, clenching her eyes shut as he touched the tender skin. “A week and you never tended to it?” He shook his head, ripping off a strip of his soaked white shirt he was wearing. “This will probably sting a little but don’t jump, I’m Rage by the way.” Rakio bit her lip as Rage pushed the wet rag onto her wound. Pain shot through her side. The stallion reared and shook his main, spraying mood over everything. “Stupid horse,” Rage growled, jumping to his feet and grabbing the lead rope, forcing the horse’s head down. “Leave him,” Rakio demanded, “he’s fine, don’t worry about that horse,” her eyes looking into the stallions. Rage glanced at Rakio and slowly dropped the rope from his hands, the horse calmed down, lowering his head and nibbling at a bale of hay. “I’ll be back, I better go get some medicine for that wound, stay right there.” Grabbing his lantern her dashed out the door, not even closing it behind him. Rakio turned to the horse as he lifted his head, his soft eyes looking straight into hers. “Why did you pick me?” The stallion whinnied softly and brushed his muddy muzzle against the girl’s cheek. “You can’t be Azhrarn’s stallion, she only rides pure black stallions, and that stupid Nassir would be following us,” Rakio glancing around the room suddenly, as if she had just missed him. Rage entered the room but paused at the doorway, mouth half open as if he was about to say something. He watched Rakio stroke the stallion’s face as the horse leaned his head on the girl’s shoulder. “You’ve had that horse since he was a foal haven’t you?” Rage asked, closing the door behind him as Rakio turned jumping suddenly. “Why do you say that?” “It’s obvious, you can’t form that strong of a bond with him in one day,” he smiled, “by the look of him, he’s not even three years old yet.” Rakio hid a smile from her face as she nodded. “So, you haven’t told me your name yet,” Rage stated, kneeling besides Rakio, a bottle and cloth in hand. He poured a small amount of the liquid onto the cloth and pressed it gently onto Rakio’s wound. “My name doesn’t need to be said.” “Suit yourself,” Rage answered, lifting her shirt up slightly so he could wrap a long piece of cloth around her waist, tying the medicine soaked cloth onto her wound. “You better rest, by the looks of it, you’ve lost a lot of blood.” Rakio nodded, leaning her head onto the hay bale, her tired eyes were finally aloud to close in peace the constant weight of the world on her shoulders was relieved momentarily. “I’ve got clothes that you were suppose to change into but they got pretty wet when I brought them over in this pouring rain,” he chuckled, lifting up a dress, water dripped to the floor beneath it. “I’ll be fine,” she answered tiredly. Rage grunted in return, “I’ll take care of your horse,” he offered, walking over to the stallion and slipping his bridal off and dropping it on a bale of straw beside him. Kneeling down, he unbuckled the saddle and pulled it off, along with the sweat soaked pad underneath, placing both on the straw bale. Glancing over at Rakio, he could tell by the way the girl’s chest rose and fell that she had fallen asleep, a smile spread across his lips as she patted the horse’s muddy side. “Are you ready to get all this mud off you?” He asked, the stallion bobbed his head in return. “Follow me my friend, rain water is the only way to do so.” He led the horse to the door and smacked his rump to send him trotting into the rain, mud fell off of him coat in clumps.

Rage grinned as he helped get it out of the stallion’s main, the water poured down on them, the lightning had disappeared along with the thunder. “The storm is almost passed,” Rage announced, “we haven’t had that much rain in years.” The stallion dashed off into the darkness, quickly returning, the raindrops flew off his coat and splattered across the ground, mixing with the rain that had begun to slow down. “You feel pretty clean to me, better get you inside before you catch cold in this rain.” The stallion snorted in return and walked towards the door, pushing it open with his hoof. “That is one of the smartest horses I’ve ever met,” Rage said aloud to himself, following the horse into the bar and grabbing a large horse blanket from one of the shelves and rubbing it along the horse’s back. “Better get you all cleaned up before this she wakes up,” Rage motioned towards Rakio, “she’s a princess isn’t she? I mean, no peasant can own a horse as high bred as yourself.” The stallion snorted as he swished his tail, sending a wave of raindrops across the floor. “You certainly are a beautiful horse, I can’t wait until your completely dry and brushed to see your full splendor,” Rage commented, grabbing another dry blanket and rubbing down the legs and rump of the stallion before dropping it on the floor behind him and picking up a brush, gliding it through the horse’s fur. “Just wait until I’m done with you, you’ll think your back in your royal stables at home,” Rage winked, working out a knot. The stallion stomped his hoof on the dirt floor in return and stood still as Rage went to work on his fur.

Chapter 2
Rakio opened her eyes, sunlight was streaming through the cracks in the wood. Mud and tuffs of fur were scattered across the floor. Pushing herself up, she slowly stood to her feet, picking the hay out of her hair as she looked around the empty barn. A small basket with bread and a slab of ham rested in it, with a wooden cup of water beside it. Rakio grabbed the piece of bread and bit into it hungrily. After a couple days of no food, anything would taste good. Once the bread was finished, which didn’t take long, Rakio guzzled down the water in the cup, wiping her mouth on her sleeve as she dropped the cup into the basket, picking up the small slab of ham and downing that next. Picking up the basket, Rakio headed towards the door, “where’s the stallion?” She said aloud, looking around as she pushed the door open and stepped out into the morning sunlight. The ground was a little soggy underneath her bare feet as she walked. A pounding of hooves was heard in the distance as a gleaming white stallion came racing towards her from off in the distance. His main and tail danced in the wind as it raced over his head, his ears perked forward. “He’s a magnificent stallion, gentle animal,” Rage spoke up, a smile spread across his lips. Rakio nodded and stroked his white muzzle. “I see you were hungry,” Rage chuckled, taking the basket from Rakio’s hand. “I hadn’t eaten in several days,” Rakio answered, “thank you for cleaning him up.” “No problem, haven’t cleaned a horse in a while, felt kind of good,” he answered, “actually, I was just about to return your riding equipment to you, it’s inside the house.” “Thanks,” Rakio answered, beginning to walk towards the house. “So…” she paused, Rage was looking off in the distance, “what do you do around here?” “I work at the general store right over there,” he answered, pointing to a large building. “So, you’ve awaken,” A smiling girl explained, running up to the two. Rakio stepped back, “and you are?” “You didn’t tell her?” She asked, looking at Rage, confusion in her eyes. “Um, this is my little sister, Meara,” Rage announced, running his calloused hands through his hair. “Nice to meet you!” Meara exclaimed, her blue hair blew in the wind as she outstretched her hand. “You too,” Rakio answered looking at the girl’s hand but refusing to shake it. Meara dropped her hand to her side but continued to smile.

Suddenly, a billow of black smoke burst forth from a black mountain, turning the sky black. “I better be going,” Rakio announced, turning around and walking hurriedly towards the house to get her stallion’s equipment. “You can’t be leaving all ready!” Meara whined, racing towards Rakio. “I have too,” Rakio answered, knocking on the door. “You can just enter,” the old woman, from yesterday, shouted from inside. Rakio dashed inside, looking around for her things. “They’re right over there,” Meara motioned towards the items. “But why must you leave so soon, your hurt.” “I’ve all ready burdened you enough, I can’t stay longer then a day, I’m to much trouble,” Rakio answered, picking up the equipment. “But your no burden, really,” Meara protested, blocking the door. “Meara, let her go,” Rage spoke up, grabbing his sister’s shoulder firmly and pulling her aside. The stallion was standing a few feet away from the door, his ears perked forward as he watched Rakio immerge from the house, trotting to meet her. Rakio smiled and dropped the equipment, sliding the pad on his back and heaving the saddle up on top of it. Rage smiled and picked up the bridal, pushing it onto the horse’s head. “Thanks,” said Rakio as she finished off the saddle’s buckle and pulled herself onto his tall broad back. “Thank you for all you’ve done to help me,” Rakio announced, picking up the reigns. Meara nodded but a frown was set on her face. “Take care,” Rage answered back as Rakio nodded, gently kicking her heels in the horse’s side. The stallion whinnied in delight as he started off at a fast walk.

“She’s not around here,” Lai grumbled, pulling on the reins her coal black mare reared to a sudden stop. The mare snorted, flexing her jaw as foam fell to the ground from her lips. Her chest heaved as sweat covered her sides. “We have to keep looking,” Samira answered angrily, turning her pure black stallion around, kicking him in the side as he rushed towards Lai. “We’ve all ready searched over there,” Lai spoke up. Samira’s stallion leaped over a fallen log trotted towards Lai and her horse. “We move on then,” anger flared in her eyes as she shouted, “yaw,” her stallion instantly dashed into a run. “That’s what I said an hour ago,” Lai mumbled snapping the reins, her mare quickly ran after Samira. “Samira, we’ve looked everywhere,” Lai stated to Samira as they slowed their horses to a walk on a dirt road that hadn’t been used in centuries. “We can’t return without the girl, you heard the Master,” Samira answered calmly, keeping her eyes on the road ahead. Nassir dove from the sky, landing on the top of mare’s head. The mare’s ears instantly flattened as she shook her head. Nassir cawed in surprise and quickly landed on the rump of the stallion. “Any news?” Lai asked eagerly, turning her gaze to Nassir as he folded his wings. “Not a sign of her anywhere,” Nassir grumbled, “the master isn’t going to be happy with this news.” “She couldn’t of just disappeared into thin air, she has to be somewhere on this miserable planet.” Samira raised her voice, her keen pointed ears listening to all the sounds around her. “Maybe she died,” Lai suggested, pulling the reins up so her mare could not grab a quick bite of the grass that grew thickly along the side of the road. “No, I can sense her power,” Samira answered, “Lai, I’m surprised you don’t as well.” “Hey, I’m a mage, I only sense powers of elements in people,” Lai shot back. “I smell something,” Asabi announced stopping suddenly. Her velvety black nose picked up all the scents in the air. “It’s the brat,” she announced, a growl rumbled within her chest. Samira grinned as she pulled her stallion tightly around, leading him off in the direction that Asabi pointed out. Lai frowned as she pulled her mare around, kicking the mare, motioning the mare to quicken her speed. Nassir clicked his beak and flew off of the stallions back, soaring overhead, flapping his small wings often to keep up the quick pace. Asabi raced after the horses, pushing herself to run as fast as possible, yet she still lagged behind, growing farther apart with each passing minute. Asabi panted heavily, her paws flew across the ground. “She went this way, I can feel her power grow stronger!” Samira exclaimed, “keep with the pace Asabi, we’re catching up.” A smile spread across Asabi’s lips as she raced ahead, keeping up with the horses

The stallions silver hooves raced across the ground, as if he were running on air. “You know, I’ll have to name you something, I can’t just keep calling you stallion all the time.” Rakio spoke up, her hands held firmly on the reins as they passed through the valley. A shadow flew across the ground beside the two. Rakio’s eyes darted towards the blue sky but saw nothing. The stallion snorted as he began to pant slightly, his white main fluttered around in the wind as he ran. Rakio smiled slightly as she looked forward, she sensed power near her, something was following her. The sun was about midway in the sky by the time Rakio walked her stallion into a shady forest, a bubbling creek echoed through the trees. Sliding out of the saddle, Rakio grabbed the reins and walked over to a small creek. Kneeling down, she scooped up water in her hands and placed it before the stallion’s fuzzy muzzle. He sniffed at the water before lowering his head to drink. Rakio downed her handful before lowering her head to the water to drink more quickly. The water poured into her damp mouth. A stick cracked behind her, Rakio jumped instantly to her feet, her hand grabbed her knife from its small sheath that rested on her belt. Rakio dashed behind a tree, crawling behind a fallen log to look through a rotten hole in the side. Something blue dashed out of sight, farther into the forest. Rakio jumped to her feet, after the stranger, her legs barely touched the ground as she chased after the blue thing. The blue figure’s pace was slow as Rakio quickly caught up. Suddenly, the stranger was gone. Rakio stopped short, looking around her in all directions, the figure was not far but hiding, Rakio could sense the power it possessed. Looking around, Rakio stepped forward, the power force grew weaker. Rakio instantly stepped back and turned around, stepping in the opposite direction, the power grew stronger, slightly, but Rakio could feel the difference. Looking down, Rakio noticed a rotting log, almost completely hiding by underbrush, a smirk spread across her face as she crept towards the log, her knife firmly gripped in her hand. In a second, she jumped on the log that crumbled underneath her weight. Quickly, Rakio held the blade towards the stranger’s neck, dust and crumbling log cluttered the air. “Don’t hurt me,” the familiar voice choked, “it’s me, Meara.” “Meara?” Rakio questioned, refusing to remove her blade, “why are you following me?” “I felt I had to,” Meara answered, trying to back away but Rakio’s strong hand caught her shoulder. “Why?” Rakio asked firmly, pulling her blade a little away from Meara’s neck. “Of course I know who you really are,” Meara announced “You do?” Rakio asked, surprise shown on her face. “Of course, I know you’re the missing princess, no peasant would own a fabulous horse as you do.” Meara answered with a gulp.

A smile spread across Rakio’s lips, “so you think I’m royalty huh?” She asked, drawing her knife from Meara’s neck and sliding it into its sheath. Meara picked herself up and brushed off the dirt on her clothes. “So, why are you following me then?” Rakio asked, standing up and looking straight into Meara’s soft blue eyes. “My brother ordered me, it’s not right for the lost princess to wander around, with a wound like you have, all by herself.” “So you’re here to protect me?” Rakio shook her head and turned away from the girl, walking through the forest towards the valley where she had left her stallion. “Wait, I we both thought it would be the right thing,” Meara called after her, running to catch up beside her. “I could help you return home to safety.” Rakio’s dark brown eyes turned towards Meara, “go back home to your family,” she stated after a while of silence, sunlight beamed on the ground as she saw the edge of the forest. “But…” “Look, I’m not the princess,” Rakio interrupted her, grabbing the horn on the Stallion’s saddle and pulling herself up onto his sturdy back. “If your not the princess then you must know where she is, for only the princess would ride a beautiful stallion as that one,” Meara answered sternly, crossing her arms as she stepped up beside the horse. “I’ve never met the princess,” Rakio answered, “I’m a wanderer, nothing more, nothing less,” she answered, kicking her heels into the Stallion’s side as she reared, he shook his white main in the breeze as his hooves hit the ground with a thud before he raced off, leaving Meara behind them.

“Her power is weakening, she must be on the move,” Samira stated, walking her black stallion across the dying grass in front of a small barn. “We should pick up our pace if she has,” Lai answered, forcing her mare into a quicker walk. “Relax, we will catch up with her soon enough, for now, let the horses rest.” Lai nodded as she slowed her mare’s pace into a lazy walk. “At least Nassir finally left us,” Asabi spoke up, her tail swinging back and forth as she trotted after the two horses, her jowls were beginning to turn white with age as her golden eyes kept watch on her master. Samira smiled slightly as she pulled her stallion to a stop and slid off his saddle, his reins in her hands as she walked. Her short brown hair was pulled back from her face, revealing her pointed ears. Her dark brown eyes glared at the valley growing larger as she walked towards it. “This mission is so boring, I don’t know why she didn’t just toast the brat when she had the chance,” Lai spoke up, sliding off her mare to stretch her legs as well. Her black sleeve was scrunched just inches below her shoulder, covering her whole left arm and a little bit of skin on the top of her hand. Black straps hugged both of her sides as they were attached to her black skirt, which revealed her hips entirely except right on her hipbone. Samira’s dark purple beaded chocker jingled slightly as she walked, her slanted had several black belts crossing her chest. Half of her stomach was covered in the thin black cloth as it was tucked into her black pants. “I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to take this burning sunlight,” Samira mumbled. “You should wear less,” Lai laughed, her black stocking on her left leg was tattered as the top was wrapped around her leg to keep it up. “I don’t know what you two are complaining about,” Asabi spoke, her tongue hung out as she panted, “you two don’t have a fur coat.” Lai grinned and continued walking, Samira looked up towards the sky, the sun had already begun to fall down from the middle of the sky. “Night will fall soon and then we shall have the advantage,” Samira stated, her black jeans ruffled as she walked even though only one leg was covered, the other was cut short, but her black boots buckled up to her knees. “Should I help the darkness along?” Lai asked, drawing her wand. Samira shook her head, “save your power, this brat can overpower us both if she ever figures it out.” Lai nodded, dropping her wand as it vanished into thin air, “Rakio will pay for her crime.” Samira clenched her fists, her black cape fluttered in the wind behind her as she walked, “we need to water the horses soon and then we’ll ride.”

“Guess what, I’ve come up with a name for you,” Rakio announced leaning forward in her saddle so she could be closer to the stallion’s ears without her words being whipped away in the wind. “I’m going to call you Chaste from now on,” she finished, leaning back in the saddle. Chaste whinnied in delight as he picked up his pace, as if the new name renewed his strength. “Purity, a nice name for a white stallion,” Meara announced, appearing suddenly beside Rakio. Chaste’s ears shot backwards, Rakio gasped in surprise as she pulled the reins in the opposite direct. “What does it take to make you go home?” Rakio asked, pulling Chaste to a stop, sweat coated his shoulders as he panted. “I told you I was going to protect you and I keep my word,” Meara answered, landed behind Rakio, her angelic white wings folded nicely behind her, her brown baggy shirt and short skirt fluttered in the wind. “You are foolish to follow after me, I’m nothing,” Rakio declared, sliding off Chaste. “You may say what you want, but I will believe what’s clear before my eyes,” Meara answered, a smile on her face. Rakio frowned and shook her head as she began walking off into the setting sunset, Chaste following her like a puppy. “Wait, I’m useful, I know where everything is here, I could find everything with my eyes closed,” Meara shouted after Rakio, racing after her. Rakio slowed her pace, letting Meara easily walk beside Rakio. “So, you’ve lived here your whole life huh?” Meara nodded, happiness shown in her soft blue eyes. “I know where more places are then you can image,” Rakio finished, walking faster, leaving Meara behind to ponder. “Wow, really?” Meara demanded, catching up in seconds, “then I can just provide some company!” Rakio sighed as Meara continued to follow, “but you can’t follow me,” Rakio stated, slower as if it didn’t process the first time. “I made a promise and I’m gonna keep it,” Meara answered, a happy-go-lucky look on her face. “Fine… but you aren’t bound to me, you get in trouble, your on your own, I have my own problems,” Rakio answered, pulling herself into Chaste’s saddle. “Don’t worry about me,” Meara answered joyfully, flapping her wings, pumping herself into the air. “Trust me… I won’t,” she growled under her breath. She gently kicked Chaste’s side as he moved forward, picking up his pace as she erdged him on, Meara flew gracefully beside Rakio as they continued on, their pace was rushed as they crossed over the open valley, but Rakio made sure to stay in the middle. A faint beating kept her alert, she knew what it was. Darkness was coming closer. “What’s the big rush?” Meara spoke up after a while. Chaste panted hard beneath Rakio as she pulled on the reins, drawing him to a stop. She can’t feel that power? Rakio thought to herself. “I warned you not to come,” was her only reply as she looked behind her, her brown hair flying into her face.
