Ok, I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but I learned this the other day...
A engine worker was about to load onto one of the lifeboats letting men on. He was only wearing a undershirt and as you know it was very cold. A old woman in first class offered him her shaw and he took it on board with him. A woman on that lifeboat lost her husband in the sinking and when they were being questioned on the Carpathia, she told the reporters that the men were dressing themselves as women to get in the lifeboats. She spread this rumor with that fact that that engine worker was the only man on that lifeboat. There is no other record of the men dressing as women on the other lifeboats.
So, the rumor that men dressed as women to get on the lifeboats is depunked and not true! As far as we know anyway.

Hm, that's a story I've never heard before. But I'm sure that some cowardly men did dress up as women. But as you said, we'll never know.

Restless_Serenity did you know there was a guy on the titanic named james dawson?! blaugh While there was indeed a person on the Titanic with the last name "Dawson", his name was technically "Joseph Dawson". The last I heard of his family was when his sister was interviewed by (I believe) Discovery Channel (maybe it was History Channel)... His sister still owns his carpenter's toolbox, which has become somewhat of a Dawson family heirloom, and knew her older brother only through stories of him (she was an infant around the time of the sinking). He was among the ship's many staff members, and he signed onto the crew under the name of "J Dawson".
