Christ you know we love you
Did you see our ways?
I believe in you and God
So tell me that I'm saved!

Jesus I am with you
Touch me touch me Jesus!
Jesus I am on your side,
Kiss me kiss me Jesus!

-- from the Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar
(I foget the name of this song)
It's from Simon and the Zealotes.

Quote:
I love this part because it shows this great longing for Jesus. This is the kind of stuff we should be shouting every day.
Except...it's not. Not in the context of the play, anyway. Have you actually seen Jesus Christ Superstar? Because the scene with Simon and the Zealotes is basically a violent revolt against the Romans, followed by Jesus chastising Simon for his violent methods. The part you quoted is their rally cry and is supossed to be highly ironic since they're basically beating people up in the name of Christ.

Yes, I have seen this musical. I watch it every Easter season and my mother plays the CD (or when I was younger, the record) almost every day durring lent.
I know that's not really what the scene in the movie is supposed to be about, but that's the impression that those specific words made on me when I was very young, listening to the record, so that's what they remind me of now.
When I was younger, I memorized this part of the song and sang along with it, but then I kind of tuned out for the rest of it. (those parts weren't nearly as fun to sing to. razz )

That's why I just posted those words, not the whole song.

Ah, okay.

I just see a lot of people who haven't seen the musical say basically the same thing you did, and they never seem to believe me when I tell them that it's supossed to be ironic.

That and taking things out of context is sort of a pet peeve of mine. Assuming they require context, that is.

Perhaps I should have provided the context of why I liked the quote in my original post then. blaugh

Anarya and I are silly geese (gooses? Hehe) on AIM.

"It'll soar like the wings of an oppressed gay man." (Regarding me throwing slippers at Henry.)
-Anarya

Quote:
Anarya (still on the topic of Henry and I throwing things at each other): Catch them! Then you can throw them back. ^_^ what are you? a girl? can't you catch things like a man?

Me: I was never much good at sports. I prefered to sit at home and make frilly dresses. But I'm so manly!

Anarya: so the pink frilly dresses are made out of leather? and tough stuff? canvas?

Mwaha.

lol

You two are indeed silly geese.

(By the way Enji, my friend uses that phrase, which I actually thought was unique to her. You're the only other person I've heard say that. Coincidence? I think not! Wait . . . . nope, sorry, I think it may just be a coincidence.)

From The Road to El Dorado

(tulio, miguel, and a horse are floating in a boat in the middle of the ocean, starving to death)

miguel: Tulio, did you ever imagine it would end like this?
tulio: The horse is a supprise.

Mitch Hedberg quotes (I love this guy!)

- I went to the Home Depot yesterday, which is really unnecessary. I need to go to the Apartment Depot, which is just a lot of guys standing around in a warehouse going, "We ain't gotta fix s**t!"

- (talking about ants) Plus, if I pulled off your legs, you'd look like snowmen.

- Now all McDonalds comercials end the same way. "Prices and participation may vary." I want to be a McDonalds owner who doesn't participate in anything. I want to be a stubborn McDonalds owner. Someone comes in and says, "I'll have a cheeseburger." and I'll say, "Nope. We've got spagetti. And blankets."

- How do you feel about frilly toothpicks?
I'm for 'em!

"Speaking of cuteness factor... I decided that if the said person who has the inherent cuteness factor declares: "I am not cute!" the cuteness factor increases sevenfold. It's the law."

Really?

Because I think I stole the phrase from someone I knew who used it a lot.

"Yeah. The sentence is as high as death, depending on how successful they were."

So, I'm re-discovering Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, which I read years ago, but I'm getting a lot more out of it this time around. (For those of you who know nothing about Brave New World, it's basically a dystopian novel where human beings are mass produced and pre-conditioned for specific purposes in society. Emotions and natural intellect are non-existent, sexual promiscuity is considered virtuous, and Henry Ford has been raised to a God-like status.)

This bit stood out to me:

Quote:
"I want to know what passion is," she heard him saying. "I want to feel something strongly."

"When the induvidual feels, the community reels," Lenina pronouced.

"Well, why shouldn't it reel a bit?"

"Bernard!"

But Bernard remained unabashed.

"Adults intellectually and during working hours," he went on. "Infants where feeling and desire are concerned."

"Our Ford loves infants."

Ignoring the interruption. "It suddenly struck me the other day," continued Bernard, "that it might be possible to be an adult all the time."

"I don't understand." Lenina's tone was firm.

"I know you don't. And that's why we went to bed together yesterday - like infants."

From the TV show, Titus . . .

Erin: How could you sell my car without telling me?
Titus: Well . . . you were sleeping. And you looked like a little angel.
Dave: Angels don't need cars. They have wings.

I really like that quote. Never read the book, though. Sounds like it's got some similarities to 1984 and The Giver, which are both favorites of mine, so I should probably check it out.

Anyone here read The Giver? I read it twice, both ages ago. I'll have to dig up some quotes.
