Layra-chan I wish Communism worked. That would be so beautiful... But no, it fails so very badly. Communism would only work in a perfect, utopian society. The reason for this is that the philosophy behind communism, where everyone freely exchanges services and/or goods with others while under the watch of a government that would monitor and keep track of such transactions would only truly work if those under such a government were infallable, a literal perfect society. Because you see, if people weren't perfect, they'd lie/cheat/steal, and that would throw the whole system out of whack. Also, the government must be incorruptable, otherwise they too would lead to the near immediate collapse of the whole system. Just look to Russia in the 20th century after World War II should you require an example of how the communist system would collapse.

I know, I know. Utopianism doesn't work, because the first person to break from the system can screw everyone over. But the ideal behind it is so shiningly beautiful...
Ah, well, we can't all live on the sun.

I just finished reading Brave New World and 1984, (For fun, not cuz I had to) and all this talk of communism made me think about those two books. Pretty much all of the stuff that Layra-chan and Bramd Wayfare were talking about happens in those books. Its pretty scarry.

1984 is a great book.
I for one don't like Communism because there is no real individual. There is no room to grow or really be free because if you do want to do something different then you screw everyone else over.

Well, that's the thing. It really depends on what kind of Communism you're dealing with. The good kind is "from each according to ability, to each according to need." You have room to grow, to be yourself, it's just that the goods and services you produce through your own method of giving to the community are spread throughout to those who need them, rather than just to those who have the resources and opportunity to take advantage of those goods and services.
It's bad Communism that is implemented because good Communism inevitably dies before getting off the ground. Bad Communism realizes that individualism ultimately favors Capitalism, because it's much easier to get an individual to work if there is an individual reward, rather than a communal reward. If one is used to being part of a community, however, and sees good/bad in terms of the community rather than the self, then one would be better suited toward the Communist system.

Is 'good' communism the same thing as socialism? Cuz I sometimes get the two confused. For example Orwell claimed to be a socialist, who disliked communism. confused
