Thanks Green, I *luckily* found one in my own town and it is open, family/ child friendly.

I try.... That is lucky. I'm in the process of trying to form a new one

Hey there, I got a couple of questions. What is/are the difference(s) between Wicca and Pagan and why?

Hiya!
paganism is an umbrella term today used for all alternative or indigenous religions or belief systems. Originally the word came from latin, meaning country people.
Wicca is a religion created in the first half of the 20th century by Gerald Gardener.
A Wiccan could be described as being a Pagan, but not all Pagans are Wiccan. Indeed not even most of them...
Likewise, wicca and witchcraft are not interchangeable terms either, which is a common mistake for new comers.
Hope that helps!

Hiya Green (actually I didn't know you were on here until I saw you a few pages back but anyways)!

So then, does that mean Paganism is more like a belief system than Wicca (where it is more widely practice)?

Also, does that mean that 'offically', Wicca is more of a recent religion/belief while Paganism is much older?

Hiya! There are a few of us sad, sad people who seem to be in all of these guilds....

Alright, maybe I wasn't making as much sense as I hoped, let me try again..

First off, may I recommend this website
http://web.archive.org/web/20050318062630/http://www.whywiccanssuck.com/ , its WhyWiccansSuck.com and is a very well informed page on Wicca, with a nice link page of other non-fluffy pages.

Erm, "officially", and in real life, Wicca is no more than 60 years old.

Paganism just refers to all or any alternative, indigenous, or quite often polytheistic religions or spiritualities... It isn't a distinct path in itself. For example, I am pagan, because my beliefs could be described as indigenous and/or polytheistic. I am also a witch, because... well.... I practice witchcraft. However, I am not Wiccan. Does that make any sense at all? Sorry if it doesn't, I really need to work on getting my thoughts across in text.

Wicca is a distinct religion and spiritual path. Because of its set out beliefs, it is also Pagan. Much like Catholicism is a distinct religion, but is grouped with other religions under the umbrella term "Christianity"

If I'm not making sense, just yell at me, and I'll try harder

If you are going by the Gerald Gardenerian version of Wicca, being the one I consider to be the original form of "Wicca", as I recall, when you are innitiated you are told the names of the Lord and Lady of the Isles...apparently also the name of the ether/soul weapon (Earth--pentacle/sheild, Fire-spear, Air-Sword, Water-...Chalice.)

Now the following is debatable due to technicalities, but generally speaking you should be 18, but you can be younger with consent, to become Wiccan. The age being required to enter a legally binding contract that will prevent you from releasing the secrets of Gardenerian Wicca, you also have to be innitiated by a recognised coven of Gardenarian Wicca...I think Alexandrian is acceptable too. (I have someone who is compared to be, an expert on this who would be able to fill in anything I missed or got wrong, and I have another person who has a fairly solid case for why Gardenarian Wicca isn't even Wicca...heh)

The only possible way to be a Gardenarian Wiccan without being innitiated by a recognised coven(being a "solitary" Wiccan) would be if the Lord and Lady of the Isles came to you and told you all the necissary secrets themselves (vision/dream, and the information would have to be accurate too).

Now, there are a number of groups or even people claiming to be Wiccan, or Neo-Wiccan, or what-have-you. And debatably since a group or "Witches" actually got a list or something passed/agreed to by a court, it would be hard to actually hold onto (in a court setting) the fact that Gerald Gardener and related things are Wiccan while other things are not. I can't say how many things are or aren't Wiccan, or why, but be wary that theres apparently alot out there, and you'll have to decide for yourself.

@Excel-Aside from all that, care to share what the three secrets names are?
