Watching Zam, the adolescent's eyes glimmered faintly. At her insistance, his head shook ever so slightly without saying a word. Yes, he was dirty, but he didn't want to go in. What if that woke it up? Maybe it was just him. Better if he stayed out of the water, then no one got hurt. "I'm here to protect." He said quietly, staring now at the depths of the water, silently daring the monster to show itself. If it did, he'd protect her. He'd prove he wasn't still afraid... right?

Zam blinked. "Protect?" From what?" There was nothing there. What did she need protection from? The water?! It wasn't even that deep! It barely came up to her belly, even at the deepest part. Maybe he was just imagining things; perhaps he had hit his head too hard earlier? Yes, that must be it. "Come on, silly!"

"The monster." He stated simply. She should know! Everyone should... Baakir looked back at her, his ears flicking back. "I'm not silly." He defended sharply, his tail curling around one of his back legs as he seemed to tense up. Waiting... Waiting...

Monster? Where?! Zam glanced around, side to side, up and down. "I don't see one. There's no monster here!" she said, sitting down in the water. He was acting mightily odd. What was going on?! "Baakir, what monster?" she asked with a sigh.

"The one that lies lurking. Waiting. It's been waiting for ages, and it still does. Time means nothing, because it has always been and always will be. Its always been waiting, and will always wait. I want to make it wait a little longer, don't you?" His claws had unsheathed, scratching at the rock as his soft voice carried. His eyes were open, but not seeing. Widened by a mixture of fear and the first leaks of his sanity. Not even Bari had known what he had seen. No one...

Either she was stupid, or Baakir had gone off the deep end, perhaps literally. Hmmm... time to intervene. "Baakir.... would you look at me?!" she said impatiently, splashing her way toward the rock he was perched on and glaring up at him with merciless and rather cranky dark eyes. "Baakiiiiiiiiiir?!"

Baakir turned his head up to her, though the eyes staring back were not those belonging to the lazy daydreamer Zambarau had met back at the Pridelands. These frightened orbs were those of a young cub being whisked away by something much stronger than he. He was afraid, the delicate daydreams that had been saving him for so long shattered like glass.

Zam uttered a soft growl of concern and then stood up on her hind legs, resting her forepaws on the rock beside him. "Baakir? It's okay. There's nothing to be afraid of. There's no monster." She nuzzled at him, twitching her tail about and making low growling, purring sounds. "I promise. There isn't one here."

The nuzzles prompted a return from him, part of his mind conflicting with the overly powerful memories of that tugging and the water... everywhere... "How can you be so sure?" His voice was till soft, though his eyes had slid back to the water. "What if its waiting? I don't want it to hurt you because of me. I couldn't survive..."

"Because my rear's in the water, and it's fine. And because I've never seen a monster or felt a monster in the water. Look, you can see right to the bottom here, and there's no monster!" Zam said in a very practical manner, nodding vigorously. See? Her logic was infallible! "It won't hurt me, and it won't hurt you because it isn't there," she said very quietly, nuzzling at him for reassurance.

"Butbutbut..." The whine in his voice rose in a childish manner, the logic of his best friend lashing out against the fear. Baakir shook his head vigorously, trying to send the mounting headache back to the place where it had come. He whined again, rubbing one of his front paws over the top of his head.

The lioness gave a gusty sigh at the whine in Baakir's tone. Really, now... he was being so cubbish. She couldn't stay mad at him for long, though, not with him looking that pitiful. Stretching out her neck, she licked the top of his head between his ears. "Baakir, there's no water monster. Really. Just give it a try?" she pleaded, sad to see him so... well, sad.

Baakir was soothed slightly by the feel of her tongue, but was still not on board with going into the water. His heart fluttered, his eyes trying to lock on with hers. His father wouldn't be here if the monster came back. "Swear," He resolved finally, standing, "if anything does happen, that you'll stay safe."

Giving him another lick for good measure, Zam rumbled softly, her dark purple eyes tagging his gaze. "I swear. But nothing's going to happen, so don't worry," she said, dropping her forepaws down off the rock and back into the water. Really, this water wasn't bad. It felt good. She snorted and trotted around the tiny pool, liking feeling the movement of the water around her legs.

Baakir nodded, stepping off the rock onto dry land. He stared at the water for a few moments, ears flicking back against his skull. Closing his eyes, he placed one paw in, jerking it out quickly as if it had burned him. He shook his head slightly, opening his eyes up again, watching Zam. He ignored all other senses but sight, green eyes following the odd lioness.
Again, his paws went forward. No feeling alarmed him as the mud squished, the water covering part of his legs refusing to send the message to his brain. He was calm, entranced, and safe in ignorance.
