Nae grinned, still not embarrassed as heads turned towards her. The other Weyr... whatever her rank was... didn't seem too bad. She shrugged; she was probably exaggerating when talking of a weyrling-hide jacket. Probably wouldn't be very warm anyway - her own skin certainly didn't keep HER very warm when that was all she wore!

As the boy, R'dan, from her Weyr spoke up, she smiled encouragingly. It was weird... she'd expected to be embarrassed at this meeting, but lately she'd been embarrassed a lot less... about anything. Really it was since she and Faerra had become friends, and even more since Nevaeh... she sighed happily. Life didn't get any better than this... she snapped back to attention. She knew more or less what happened, but she wanted to hear it from an experienced rider's point of view nonetheless.

Hearing as the questions went round, Fae simply listened. But the question Nae had asked had been on her mind as well. After all, the two golds were eggtwins. But perhaps they would be like runnerbeast twins. In the case that both survived, one was always smaller and behind the other in maturing, for the other would get most of the nutrients. But then, dragons weren't runners. It would work out somehow..

What are you doing right now mine? Is it an interesting meeting?

Faerra almost laughed at her dragon's sudden mental outburst, but stopped herself, it wouldn't do to start suddenly laughing for no reason. Yes love, it is interesting, it's about risings.

Risings? Really? But why? I'm not rising.

Yes, but you will, this is just so the riders know what to expect.

She turned her attention back to Tolara, after R'dan's question had been asked. She needed to hear this after all.

Quietly listening to the discussion, Ava felt a littly uneasy... not due to the subject, but because she knew that Faith would be nearing an age when all of this would happen. Looking around the room, she noticed that several of the others seemed pretty embarassed by the subject. A couple of them didn't seem too bothered by it, though.

She managed to smile as she remembered a blunder that she'd made one day, just after her Impression. How she could have walked up to that tableful of bronze riders so unknowingly... She slowly shook her head at the memory, then listened again to the conversation at hand.

The poor boy flushed as the meeting continued, but he had one less worry than the females in the room. He couldn't get pregnant. However, that didn't deter him from paying attention still. He'd seen several children around the Weyr, and it made since that riders had children just like everyone else. He could see why they were fostered as Amlaith took almost all of his time, leaving little for himself, much less a child. Not that he had to worry about that.

R'dan's main worry was that he would be caught unaware when Amlaith did rise, however far in the future that would be. He was afraid of being unprepared when it happened and not knowing what to do. "Uh..." He glanced about as he spoke again, louder as the first comment was barely above a whisper. "What exactly do we do when our dragon rises?" Cheeks red from the attention that was now directed towards him, he ducked his head for a moment.

Tolara stumbled in her mental processes for a moment, the mental gape translating to a few blinks. Well... You have lots of fun!

Hush.

"Well, er....As I said before, you'll tell the Weyrwoman before hand and then you'll stay in your weyr as much as possible. When your dragon actually begins the flight," her face still flamed as her mind shied away from the more in depth details, "You'll go along for the ride. Ah...you'll know what to do then. I'd suggest for you...if you have any more questions talk to T'rin."

I'll tell Morkth! He'll enjoy doing the talk again!

Somehow I get the feeling T'rin will not be happy with me. Again.

Ray tries not to grin at Tolara's uncomfortable response, and tried to reassure the poor boy. "Yes, you'll be feeling some very strong emotions, but don't worry, we don't expect you to make any permanent attachements as the result of a flight. It's all for your dragon, and your dragon wants you to be... ah... happy, as happy as she is while flying. As for what you have to do, don't worry about it.

"With a Green, they don't have to blood their kill beforehand; they don't clutch, so they don't need to worry about an endurance flight. You do have to exert some control over her; try to keep her within the Weyr's boundaries. Don't let your dragon fly over any Holds--especially with Fort Hold so close..." She trails off and shrugs.

"Well, Greens are noisy with their emotions sometimes; even non riders sometimes can pick up on the intensity and ... well... respond. Holders are pretty funny when it comes to sex, and Holdbred adolescents past about fourteen Turns tend to really respond to the overwash of emotions during a flight. Weyrbred children, having been exposed to Green flights all their lives, grow to ignore the emotional overwash."

She grins openly. "That's how my rival came to Telgar though; a Green flight happened to pass just a bit to close to where a group was out gathering herbs, and resulted in a rather chancy situation with the Lord Holder's daughter. He stormed up to the Weyr to demand reparation; his daughter's reputation--and thus her value as a wife--had been compromised by a passing Green's flight, and it just so happened he brought her with him, he dragged her past one of the Search dragons... and there was a clutch on the sands... and she was claimed."

"Considering the circumstances, I can imagine that this didn't sit to well with him," Ava commented. "Is there a way of keeping a gold within the Weyr's boundaries during her flight?" She hoped for a positive answer-- running through her mind were the potentials for disaster if a queen's flight accidentally overflew a populated area...

Gail bowed repectfully when introduced to the Benden weyrlingmaster but kept quiet most of the meeting. She could see why Tolara would feel uncomfortable explaining this to the werylings, and she figured most of them were hold bred like herself.
In a few years, she figured, they would all embrace the flights with open arms; after all the fuss was over and the flight acutally began Gail was thrilled, it was the most fun she had had with a partner. She supposed that any inhibitations she had once had were dispelled by a few senior journeymen. Harpers certainly knew how to woo a woman.
She had heard master harpers talk that some hold bred picked to impress were overwelmed at first by the amazingly different lives that dragonriders lived. Gail herself as a weyrling had been amazed at how openly sex and flights were discussed amoung senior riders.
Most of these kids were in for quite a shock. No, she corrected herself, some of them were nearing her age despite the fact she had impressed rather later than most.
She chuckled softly.
"If queens are anything like greens, they don't go too far from the males and the males know what to do, most of them are very practiced at it."

Ray nods at Gail's comment. "Queens are a bit more of a handful when their time comes; you have to make sure they blood their kills, of course. Most Queens tend to go straight up, with only minimal manuevering around to the sides; the best clutches come from flights that are consumated after a long and high flight. The higher the dragons are when the ... ah," Ray gropes around for a word that wouldn't shock the youngsters, "... when the Queen is caught, the longer the pair can stay entwined, and thus more eggs get fertilized."

She backtracked a moment, "Actually, Lord Telgar was somewhat relieved; it solved his problem, with the bonus of having a daughter Searched; that is, after all, an honor."

Nae suppressed a laugh, knowing what the Weyr-whatever from Benden was trying to say. She lifted one hand to hide her mouth, smiling behind it. She supposed most of these people would get over their embarrassment eventually; after all... they kind of had to. She imagined it'd be a lot easier on them... she hadn't had her dragon fly yet, but even just Mel... she winced, remembering what she'd done to that poor G'dor, and he already a bit touchy on the subject... She grinned again.

Tolara nodded as well. "If no one else has any questions the weyrling from Fort are dismissed. I believe R'ign has a lesson for you." The small groans that drifted up brought a smile to her face. It could have been much worse. R'ign was quite easy compared to their weyrling master.

Mine, is your meeting over?

Hmm? Yes, it's just ended. What do you need, love? Food? Oil? Nae was immediately lost in talking to her little queen, forgetting to walk as people bumped into her, trying to nudge her aside and keep her from blocking the door.

No, it's not that. Melyna is on the hatching sands...

Oooooh... I see. Nae shook her head and left the room, heading immediately over to the hatching sands.

The poor boy slowly began to relax as the goldrider from Benden made a sort of joke. He didn't catch onto it for a while (he is male, you know), but after some thought and noticing a few smiles about the room, he finally got it. He thinks.

Groaning softly with the other weyrlings, he headed out of the room, glad to be away from such a topic. He headed back to the Weyrling Barracks, determined to gripe at Amlaith for neglecting to mention the topic of the meeting.

Tolara took a sip of the water and pulled over the slate that came with it. Quickly she sketched down the names of the golds and greens that were at Fort then drew a line under it and listed Benden's.

"Rayinte. You might want to have the older weyrlings stay here since now we'll try and make a rough schedule of when everyone's due next to rise."
PostPosted: Thu Jan 06, 2005 8:49 pm

Ray nods. "The only older one I have at the moment is Ava, Gold Faith's rider, from Netesath's clutch. Do you think R'ign could keep an eye on the younger batch until the meeting is completely over?"

((Going over the list by active riders, there's myself, Beriadi, Ava, and Ryala, though I can't recall seeing Ryala lately...))

Tolara smiled, a bit evilly. "Oh she'll be glad to." Glith please pass the message along to Kerth that R'ign will be babysitting the weyrlings from Benden.

Glith was silent for a moment. If that is her punishment can I please skip mine?

Tolara laughed, again with the slight tint of evil in it. It's not that easy. Next time you could of course tell me directly without having to resort to play mystery dragon.

Turning back to the other gold rider, Tolara nodded. "She's been told."

((Okay, and Fort just has Gail and myself as the mature dragons. Xaith just rose adn Glith was a little before that so it's someone from Benden next.))
