Howard Mugglesworth
Professor of High Energy Metaphysics, Unseen University
The assistant to Ponder Stibbons in the High Energy Magic Building, Howard is one of the most dangerous Wizards at Unseen University, as the arcane academic is a brilliant specialist in Theoretical Thaumaturgy and is obsessed not only with knowing how magic works, but why.
His current project is the Thaumatron, a bewildering mass of copper coils encircling a gigantic doughnut of thaumium through which streams of raw magical energy are accelerated to truly ridiculous speed in the hope that Something Wonderful Will Happen. Once completed, Howard believes that the Thaumatron will be reveal the secrets of magic and begin a New Age of Applied Thaumaturgy on Discworld; the only problem is deciding what flavor of icing to put on the Thaumium doughnut...
Howard is a plump and pleasant-looking wizard about thirty years of age with a disorderly mane of bright reddish-copper hair, a shaggy goatee usually in need of trimming, thoughtful blue eyes usually hidden behind steel-rimmed spectacles, and robes in blue and brown which are unusual in that they lack the usual sequins, stars, and other tasteless decorations worn by wizards, and may be one of the few Wizards on Discworld with (gasp) a sense of style. His wizard's staff has a knob on it, but Howard never talks about it and always blushes when someone calls attention to it. Howard also grew up in the Ramtops and is related to Nanny Ogg--something that the wizard never talks about, either.
Howard is on good terms with the Librarian (OOK!) but prefers to avoid Munstrum Ridcully whenever possible.

i'm a travelling bard. i go to a different town every few weeks so no one really gets to know me well. i'm called by a different name in each town i go to. some people hate me, some people love me, others just don't know what to think. nonetheless, i treck around the disc spreading tales of old and singing songs.
