He sighed heavily, not at all surprised by the randomness of the sudden explosion, nor by the maniacal laughter. He slowly stood, nodding for Gear to follow as he walked toward the front door to get to the testing grounds.
"So...this new vehicle...what are the specs on it? And by the way, about the project...dont scrap it completely. Keep the files in a seperate folder, the one for projects that have yet to be finished. I know command wants it halted, but they never said to toss it out. I know I can figure it out, and I'm going to make it work even if I have to hammer it into submission."

"I'm a step ahead of you there," Gear said. "The specs of the new Phoenix-class water-to-ground skimmer are loaded into your 'Projects' folder in your computer account. And as far as the original project is concerned..." He paused a moment, almost like he was looking around for anyone listening in. "...no one ever wanted to just scrap the project anyway. All the information is saved on the sub-drive. No one can access it but me, and only cyberpathically. No one can find it, no one can get it but through me. No one will even know it's there but the two of us." He sighed. "Anyway, I better go check on injuries."

He shook his head, kicking the door open with enough force to slam it loudly against the wall. His face was not that of an amused or patient man. He snarled softly, looking over the remains of a destroyed vehicle. He shook his head, easing down the fires and putting them out with a slight gesture of his hand, then strode among the debris and shrapnel, putting out any little fires he came across. He put his fists on his hips, one eyebrow cocked up in tacit disapproval.
"So...anyone want to tell me why my testing ground is suddenly a war zone? Again?"

Gear stood behind General Drake, trying to hide his amusement at what had happened. The guy who had been laughing when they walked out had quickly shut up and looked red in the face. "Well, um...the tree...jumped out in front of us while we were driving..." he said.

He slowly regarded the man who had spoken, a look of disbelief and amusment on his face.
"So...am I to understand that you wrecked such an costly machine...because of incompetent driving? For the love of everything flammable...please tell me your joking."
He had to be. He looked back at Gear, trying to see if this really was a joke.
"So much work...so much money and time and effort...destroyed by a tree? A TREE!? I thought this was a vehicle that was supposed to go into combat...and its destroyed by a tree. Good lord....MDG is going to have my...umm...head."

Gear cocked one eyebrow and walked forward to the tree, as the babbling tech tried to explain that the tree literally jumped out in front of them. "General Drake? This is one of those new trees, apparently. You know, the steel-plated ones with the rockets and wheels attached to the bottom? One of those."

His jaw literally hung open for a second before he regained his composure, leaning back against a wrecked peice of machinery. He slowly put his hands on his face, a soft sigh of exhasperation slowly escaping between his digits. His voice was low and even, like a man who couldnt believe the answers he was getting. He regarded his second through an opening in his fingers as he spoke.
"Gear...I know Im going to hate the answer to this...but why in the hell have we been building armor plated trees?"

"Would you believe we were trying to measure the health benefits between organic and steel-plated bananas?" he joked, trying to cheer up his boss. He stopped for a moment, letting the joke sink in, then ran the data across his face at lightning speed. "The steel-plated tree was designed for driver safety courses so people," he said, gesturing to the labtechs outside, "would be able to drive this heavy machinery without smashing into...the steel plated...trees." He steeled himself against what would probably be General Drake's explosive reaction. "For the record...I had nothing to do with that project."

He sighed softly, trying to settle his rather fierce temper. This morning had started off bad...not a good sign for the rest of the day. He slowly walked among the wreckage of what had once been a combat vehicle, knowing that each and every scrap equated a price tag, all of which would be cashed out by MDG as one hell of a**-beating for whoever was responsible. It would be easy to dissasociate himself from the matter and let the techs take the blame, but, unfortunately, that wasnt the kind of man he was.
"Alright Gear...get this cleaned up. Maybe if we can get all this out before she notices, we can avoid the wrath of MDG. If not, direct her to me alright? And for the love of God, scrap the trees alright? And repremand whatever idiot thought of that."

"You got it, sir. By the way, a package arrived for you this morning. It's sitting at your desk. You might want to go check it out, it's addressed as being from MDG herself. Why she'd send you a package I don't know..."

He slowly cocked an eyebrow in curiosity, casting a glance back over his shoulder at the building from which they had emerged only minutes ago. He didnt remember there being a package on his desk, but then again, he couldnt exactly remeber half the crap that cluttered his workspace. A package from MDG...that was odd. It wasnt as if they were a different state...half the time she wanted his Department to work on something new, she delivered the orders herself. For this...this must be a special case. He nodded to Gear, trusting that he could handle the situation. He spun on his heel, walking rather briskly back toward to the main building. He gestured toward the doors, swinging them open with a quick burst of telekinesis. He walked through them, making a beeline for his desk and the package that awaited him.

The package sat on his desk until he was about ten feet away. Then it suddenly launched itself into his face, made a massively loud explosive sound, and actually exploded with about ten pounds of charcoal dust that covered the empty room in a thick black cloud. A single piece of paper fluttered to the ground, easily distinguishable as Gear's handwriting.

He stopped dead, his eyes opened wide in surprise. Then, they slowly narrowed when he looked around his once relatively clean lab. Now, everything was covered in dust, including him.
"You...b*****d..."
He slowly smiled, blasting the dust away from his body with telekinetic ease. He closed his eyes, letting his telekinetic power flow through him as the dust began to lift off of every surface, every scrap of paper and whirl around in the air, slowly coming together into one, medium sized ball of charcoal dust. He slowly moved it above the door, then, after making sure he was completely clean, he put on a look of extreme urgency, pulling open the door and looking out toward where his traitorous subordinate was standing.
"Gear! We've got a Code Red from MDG! I need you in here ASAP! The prototype robotic defense drones are beginning to go balistic, and I need your help to kill the control mainframe!"
He ran back inside, then waited against his desk, making sure the ball of dust was right where he wanted it to be. Gear would learn that if you messed with him, you would always...always...pay.

Gear turned around, alarmed. "Hang on," he said, running for the door. "If I can uplink with the computers, I can prevent the..." He stopped short when he got in the door. None of the computers were going off in alarm. So his prank had worked, and now he wanted revenge. Still standing outside the door, he looked carefully for the package that he'd left for Drake, and saw it gone. "Nice try!" he called to Drake as he looked around a bit, determining that he'd set up the dust somewhere near the door.

Drake didnt drop the look of worry or alarm, simply staring at Gear in abject confusion.
"Gear, what the hell are you talking about? I came in here for the package, but there was none. I was about to radio MDG when she triggered the Code Red. It was like Christmas in here a few moments ago, but it would seem the droids have cut the alarms!"
He surreptitiously pressed a button on the control console behnd him. Several large scale combat droids came through the lab doors, there eyes red for combat mode. They instantly focused on the two officers, raising stun round equipped rifles. They began firing, Drake's preset program having them aim a little high and wide in order to ensure that none would hit. There were dozens of them, and Drake had already taken the initiative and sheilded their control cores from any sort of interference except from his voice command, and that included Gear's cyberpathy. He would have his revenge yet.
"Gear! Get down! Try to use your cyberpathy to shut them down!"
