I could have a debate with myself over this.
May I please be on both teams at once?

Elanchana I could have a debate with myself over this. May I please be on both teams at once? Sorry, you have to pick one because this is an actual contest with prizes, you can always discuss the way it turned out later though. phantom2468 please post with references and/or information or I'll have to remove you from the team. To quote the first post: Quote: This isn't a topic just a yes or no answer, because it is a debate you need reasons to support your answer. Quotes and such are incredibly important for making your argument, but not always necessary. You can also use outside sources (medical evidence, real historical facts, etc.) to make your point.

I don't see why everyone is so worked up over Raoul. Sure he's less insane, but so what?! You call yourselves P.O.T.O. fans, but you are over there saying raoul is better! What's so great about Raoul anyway?! domokun scream

Getting you butt kicked is part of the process of any discussion (have you seen how many time I've gotten MY a** kicked since joining this guild?!? And I've only been on Gaia for two weeks! xd ) And being Phantom of the Opera fans doesn't mean our worlds revolve around just Erik. He just has the privelge of having the title role. You can be a Harry Potter fan and like Ron Weasly better, right? We also like Erik but it just so happens we are in a debate right now where we have to defend Raoul. Defending Erik is your job.

Speak for yourself, I argue for Raoul even when I'm not in a debate. xD
I like him, Erik AND Christine equally, I just happen to think that Raoul was the right choice for her to marry. Even if Erik wasn't a batshit loonball who lived underground, Christine has a right not to be forced to marry someone she doesn't love.

xp I meant about all the Erik-bashing.
I defend Raoul in real life too (thank god for this guild, so much ammo) though I probably spend more time defending the musical actually. So many anti-musical people where I'm from. whee I was just trying to make a point.
Is it just me, or is the majority of the pro-Erik/anti-Raoul phanbase composed of girls and the pro-Raoul people composed of guys? And I said MAJORITY so, yes, I do know of exceptions. It's just been coming up as a common theme, especially in all the fop boards.

Well, there hasn't been anything from the other team, so might as well make the best of it. 3nodding

I can't really say much on the topic without harming affecting the outcome seeing as I'm the one running it, but I'm a Raoul girl myself. Then again I had a real world boyfriend who was a loony like Erik (I didn't realise it right away) and you quickly lose the fantasy of the story and step into reality when that sort of thing happens
I used to be a fop hater too. I think its just an "I will love him and it will be all better" thing that many females have.
Anyway... back to the debate. Elanchana should be posting soon, when she does I'm adding her to team Erik. She seems to really wanna debate both sides, but I'm officially putting her on team Erik just to keep things somewhat even and going decently smoothly. If there's still not enough debate material I can try to defend Erik as well.

*crosses arms sternly* Not going to start making arguments until you list me as double-team. I might do most of my posting for Team Erik, but my real role will be getting the debate out of standstills like this one. I won't post unless I need to.

In response to Elanchana's enthusiasm for being able to debate both sides I've now added a third option for free-debaters. This means you can discuss both sides but you will not be receiving prize money and I no longer have time to make pretty debate banners so you unfortunately won't be getting any.
Hopefully this will spark some more activity in this thread.

I'll make one! It won't be pretty like yours, but it'll still be a banner. Although I have, like, no signature space right now. Edit: Here it is! Anyway, in response to recent activity in the debate: Erik has had a hard life so far as a deformed, monsterous, social outcast. He finally thought his life would change for the better because of Christine, but then Raoul took her away from him. She was his last chance. Even if he couldn't marry her, she still could stay with him.

Stayed with him how, exactly? Sort of a, 'we can still be friends' type thing?
Depending on how you interpret Erik's level of sanity, that could or couldn't work. It would certainly do him good to have somoe company and human contact, and I don't think that would be imposing too much on Christine either. The question then is whether Erik would be able to handle a situation like that? Would the be capable of being around Christine without pursuing her romantically?
But as an aside, I think saying that Raoul 'took Christine away' is misleading. It makes it sound like Raoul made or convinced her leave Erik, when he didn't. Christine had already decided on her own to try and get away from Erik because he was batshit crazy, and then enlisted Raoul in helping her. He didn't even really lure her away romantically; she was never in love with Erik and probably never would have been, even if Raoul wasn't there.

Here is my point of view.
Raoul may not be as cool or as mystery like as Erik, but believe me, Raoul would kill just as many people if not more for Christine.
If I were Christine, I would go for Raoul for these reasons: He could/and WOULD not kill me if I got into a small argument with him. He isn't as creepy as Erik. [ I looove creepy. But the thing is, I don't want to wake up every moment of my life next to a guy with a mask on... ]
Erik is also obsessive, as I heard one of my fellow team members say already. That is not love.
Love isn't to be tossed around with, either. Love is knowing that someone is there, just for you. Knowing that whoever loves you, will drop everything that they are doing just to hug you. Just to hear your problems. Love holds no secrets; like what Erik holds quite a lot of, as well...

The comment about "Raoul taking Christine away" is from Erik's point of view. I know that Raoul was only trying to protect her, but Erik was trying to help her succeed. In odd ways, yes, but he was still helping her. And even if Christine didn't marry Erik, she could still stay with him, be like a daughter to him, and learn to really appreciate him for who he was. That way he would know someone still loved him and he wouldn't kill himself because of grief.
I know I'm kind of stealing the debate, but someone from Team Erik needs to carry on. Where are they?
