Excuse me, but its YOUR responsibility to contact the artist in regards to redistributing stuff on sites, NOT visa versa.

And as I said, your example is flawed. It's not like leaving something out in the open, its like leaving it in your public gallery, and people going in and taking it from there.
There isn't a question it belongs to you, and is yours. And the people ignore the notices on the wall saying "please do not redistribute" because they're in spanish or something.

It is not like just LEAVING something somewhere, completely unclaimed, outside of your territory, etc. Don't be ridiculous.
More like leaving the gallery ungaurded and open 24-7 so people can always enjoy the works.

A website is a much mroe personal thing. It has a name and address, even though its very open.

A much more personal thing or not, it's still a public place, which leaves your things open for the taking.

No more so then a massively published magazine or manga. And while people still do that as well, they at least know its illegal.
Are the printed zines and comics 'asking for it' by having it mass produced in a public space?
What about doujinshi?

Anything that is in any public place is up for grabs. People sell manga/doujin scans on Ebay all the time >_>;; And honestly, if it weren't for doujinshi scans I would have never bought any myself. Most of the time at cons, they have doujins in plastic wrappers, and you're not allowed to look at them. And covers an be very deceptive as to the content. (I bought a puppyshipping doujinshi that ended up being FEMALE jonouchi/Seto...yeah, wtf?) And also, cover art can look alot better then the actual art on the inside, so if you ahve scans by an artist, you can see that there work is good, and feel more confident buying one of their products. Plus, if you own the manga/doujinshi yourself hving the scans isn't illegal.
